Her Guardian Angel – Angel Romance Novel out now!

It’s the release day for HER GUARDIAN ANGEL today! Her Guardian Angel is the fourth book in my Her Angel romance series, and the first novel as the previous three stories were novellas. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first three stories (HER DARK ANGEL, HER FALLEN ANGEL and HER WARRIOR ANGEL) as you can read this one out of order with them.

You’ll even get to meet the heroes and heroines from the first three novellas as they feature heavily in Her Guardian Angel!

Her Guardian Angel is available now in e-book formats from my website and from Amazon Kindle Stores. It will shortly be available from Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, Sony, Kobo and Apple iBookstore too, as well as in paperback.

Here’s the blurb and an excerpt from Her Guardian Angel (Her Angel Romance Series #4)

Felicity Heaton
A simple mission becomes a fight for survival in this fantastic instalment in the Her Angel series.

A guardian angel dedicated to his duty, Marcus will do whatever Heaven asks of him, but even his loyalty has its limits. When his superior orders him to gain Amelia’s trust through seduction, Marcus starts to question his mission and his feelings for the beautiful woman he has watched over since her birth.

Amelia has gone from one bad relationship to another, so when a gorgeous guy moves in next door looking like Mr Right, she hopes he doesn’t turn out to be another black knight in disguise. But there’s more to Marcus than meets the eye, and when he rescues her from three demonic men, Amelia is thrust into his nightmarish world—a world where God and the Devil exist, and only one angel can save her from death—Marcus, the angel she’s falling in love with.

On the run from demonic angels and the Devil himself, aided by Marcus’s angel friends and their amazing women, fighting for survival against the odds, Marcus and Amelia discover a love that will last forever.

A love so strong it will shake Heaven and Hell.

Excerpt
Marcus stretched his left arm out above his head on the pillows of his double bed, buried the fingers of his right hand into his overlong black hair and stared into the inky dark of his bedroom. The open window to his left allowed pale light to filter in from the street far below but it barely cut through the gloom and it wasn’t the reason he had lifted the sash around midnight. The stifling summer’s day had given way to a humid night that showed no sign of cooling down before dawn broke and heralded the next unbearably hot day. A light breeze washed in through the open window, refreshing him as it caressed the left side of his bare body. The heat wasn’t the only thing robbing him of sleep.

The banging came again, more persistent this time, and Marcus clenched his teeth to contain his growing irritation, his focus wholly on the hall outside his apartment. The man had been attacking the door of his neighbour for almost twenty minutes now, rousing Marcus from sleep and throwing him straight into a bad mood that had gradually deteriorated into a desire to beat some sense into the mortal.

He drew in a long breath, held it a moment in a vain attempt to regain control of his temper, and then exhaled slowly. The man hurled another string of impotent threats at his neighbour’s door and Marcus’s anger spiked right back up. His silver-blue eyes slid towards the digital clock on his bedside table. The display mocked him with the ungodly hour this man had chosen to air his bitter disappointment to not only the female but the entire apartment block. Three in the morning.

Because of the humidity that showed no sign of abating and had made it impossible to get comfortable, Marcus had only been asleep for a scant few hours. He hated waking early, especially when he was stuck in the hell known as the mortal realm.

The man banged again, rattling the wall with a tremor that reached Marcus. He was no threat to the woman because she wasn’t foolish enough to answer her door, but it grated on Marcus’s nerves nonetheless.

His temper frayed when the man shouted foul accusations at her.

All of them false.

Marcus had known Amelia all of her life, although she had only known him this past month. He had watched over her and she was a pure soul with terrible luck when it came to men, and the man knocking down her door didn’t deserve her.

Unable to bear another second and sensing Amelia’s increasing fear through the wall that joined their apartments, Marcus rose from the bed and slung on a pair of dark grey jogging bottoms. He walked through his unlit apartment with ease, not bothering with the lights as he could easily map a safe path around the furniture without seeing it, and unlocked his front door. He yanked it open and stepped out into the dull cream hallway on the other side, his gaze immediately fixing on the mortal that was daring to break his sleep and threaten Amelia.

The dark haired man looked at him.

Marcus coolly stared back.

“What’s your problem, mate?” The man’s fingers curled into fists at his sides. Marcus noted everything about him in under a second.

He was drunk. He was itching for a fight. And he was a fool who thought this sort of abuse would win Amelia back. On the surface, the man wanted to upset her and hurt her, but Marcus could see beyond the façade to the pale hope in this man’s heart that Amelia would be his again.

That was something Marcus would never allow.

“You.” Marcus pinched the bridge of his nose, rubbed sleep from his eyes, and then leaned back against the doorjamb, folding his arms across his bare chest and crossing his legs at his ankles.

The man regarded him for a moment and then turned back to Amelia’s door.

“I think you should leave now.” Marcus stepped forwards, bringing the man’s attention back to him so he wouldn’t bang on the door again and cause Amelia’s fear to increase. “Before things get out of hand.”

The man smiled, amusement touching his dark brown eyes. “What you gonna do about it? She’s my girlfriend… not yours. Piss off back inside and get your nose out of my bloody business before I break it.”

Marcus sighed. He had warned the man. He had done everything by the book. His patience wearing thin, he looked the man over again, taking in his dark jeans and the loose t-shirt that covered a physique half his own and the way his fists shook as he shouted at Amelia’s door. Without resorting to violence, Marcus wasn’t sure how to convince the man to leave. He could compel him, but using his powers on such a base creature was beneath him and would do nothing to teach the man a lesson in manners towards women.

The man banged on the door again before Marcus could stop him, hard enough this time that the white painted wood creaked under the attack, and he heard Amelia gasp.

“That is it.” Marcus took another step forwards and the man swung at him. Marcus dodged his fist, clamped his left hand down on the man’s wrist, and twisted his arm behind his back. The man bent forwards to stop his shoulder from popping out of its socket, facing away from Marcus, and grunted in pain. Marcus glared at the back of his head. “I said to leave.”

The man struggled in his grip but stilled when Amelia’s apartment door eased open a few inches and she peered around it. Marcus stared at her, frowning at the tears that streaked her flushed cheeks and the fear in her grey eyes, and tightened his grip on the man’s arm until he let out another deeply satisfying grunt.

“What do you want?” she whispered, voice hoarse and trembling.

It wasn’t like Amelia to look afraid of anything. Marcus had seen her fight it out face-to-face with her exes without showing a trace of fear but this one had rattled her. Weariness shone in her grey eyes, lending them a cold edge he hadn’t seen before. Her gaze tracked up Marcus’s arm, lingering a moment on his bare torso, and then reached his face.

“I’m sorry if he woke you.” Her gentle tone dissolved some of his anger.

Marcus loosened his grip on the man’s wrist but held on to him. “It’s not a problem. I couldn’t stand by and do nothing.”

The man twisted enough to look back at Marcus over his shoulder and then turned his head towards Amelia.

“Oh, I see how it is. Dump me and then move on to the next bloke, right? You’ve probably been fucking him from the moment he moved in. Well, I’m sure Mr Muscle is a great catch…” The man wrenched free of Marcus’s grip and stumbled forwards a few steps before righting himself. “But I’m gonna have to fuck up that pretty face of his.”

Marcus reacted on instinct and launched his left fist at the man to counter his attack. The moment he did, he felt the strength drain from his arm and pushed harder. He had been holding back to avoid seriously injuring the mortal but now that Heaven had stripped him of his immortal strength he needed to do the opposite and give it everything he had.

He leaned back to avoid the man’s punch while still pushing forwards with his own and slammed his fist hard into the man’s jaw, cracking his head to one side and sending him crashing into the cream wall. The man bounced off it, hit the dark banister opposite and then collapsed into an ungainly heap on the wooden floor of the hallway.

“Shit.” Pain shot along every bone in Marcus’s hand and up his arm to his elbow. It had actually hurt.

The man groaned and dragged himself to his feet and Amelia hesitated in the doorway of her apartment, looking as though she couldn’t decide whether to assist him or keep back. Marcus shook his hand and waited for something to happen. Instead of the instant punishment he had expected, there was only silence as the man stared hard at both him and Amelia, and then stumbled down the stairs to the next floor.

Marcus still waited.

Part of him couldn’t believe that he had struck a mortal and the rest couldn’t believe that he wasn’t being punished.

Heaven had limited his power the moment he had subconsciously decided to hit the man, leaving him with only the strength of a mortal and therefore open to attack himself. The punch had hurt him. Perhaps that was punishment enough. Perhaps all of this was punishment for his misdeeds.

Marcus sagged against the wall and blew out a sigh, clutching his injured hand to his chest, convinced that Heaven would call him in to reprimand him soon enough. He had committed an act of violence against what could be considered an innocent human. Marcus couldn’t think of the man that way. He was vile and cruel, seeking to scare Amelia and hurt her. Marcus had only done his duty by protecting her.

He opened his eyes and looked across at her where she stood at the banister peering down into the stairwell, her hands clutching the wooden railing.

His gaze drifted down over her shoulder-length straight dark hair to the plum-coloured slip that only emphasised her sensual curves, to the lean lengths of her legs. She was so soft and pure. Delicate yet strong of heart. Her fear was gone now, leaving behind the confident woman he was used to seeing in her.

She looked across at him and his eyes dropped to her bare feet. He frowned at the tattoo on her left ankle. A cherub? The plump winged babe sat just above her ankle bone, staring back at him. He smiled. Is that what she thought his kind looked like? The image humans had of angels couldn’t have been more wrong. It amused him, stealing away his pain and pushing it to the back of his mind.

His strength returned and the pain dulled further, leaving only a gentle throbbing and bruised knuckles behind as a reminder of what he had done.

“I really am sorry about that.” Amelia’s soft voice stole into his thoughts and he glanced up at her. She crossed the hall to him and peered at his left hand. “You should put some ice on that.”

Marcus studied his red knuckles. Is that what humans did in this sort of situation? In his world, they had angels with the ability to heal others. Such an angel could easily fix this issue for him. Even if he couldn’t find one, the red marks would be gone in less than a day, his body’s superior healing ability quickly erasing them.

“Would you like to come in for some coffee or a drink? It’s the least I can do as payment for being my hero.”

Marcus stared at her. Coffee was payment for being a hero? He hadn’t indulged in such drugs in a long time and while he knew about the sexually stimulating effects that caffeine had on his kind, he had no interest in drinking coffee with Amelia. If he did that, he wasn’t sure what would happen between them, but it would certainly be embarrassing for him.

“No, thank you,” he said and when she looked as though she needed a reason for his refusal, he added, “It will keep me awake.”

She still didn’t seem satisfied. She shifted foot to foot, her gaze darting down to her hands in front of her, and then looked right into his eyes again.

“How about I ice those knuckles instead then?”

Marcus glanced into her low-lit apartment and then back at her, and caught the fear in her eyes as she looked down at the stairwell. She was afraid that the man would return and begin harassing her again. He would accept her offer but not because he needed her to assist him with his healing. He would go with her because he could see that the man had won and had shaken her up, and that she was asking him to stay with her a while because she was scared.

It was his duty to protect her. Tonight, that duty could extend to guarding her a little more closely than usual. Once she had settled and was comfortable with the idea of being alone again, he would take his leave.

He nodded when her attention returned to him.

Amelia led the way into the apartment, leaving him to muse what he had done tonight and his duty.

She deserved better.

A better life.

That was the reason he was here—to keep her safe and watch over her. To protect her from the creeps and from something else.

To give her that better life.

He was sure of it.

Marcus followed her towards the kitchen, noting that the layout of her apartment differed slightly to his as he passed through the pale square lounge. There were no windows in it, just like his one, because the bedroom and bathroom lined the exterior wall opposite him. Their positions in the apartment were reversed in his. He stared through the open door of the room to the right. Her bedroom was next to his and the head of her bed rested against his wall. She slept so close to him, yet he couldn’t feel her when he was in bed, couldn’t sense her on the other side. At such proximity, he should have been able to even when her signature was dulled by her sleeping. His gaze fell to rest on the long cream couch angled towards the television set to his right in the corner of the lounge. A pillow occupied one arm of the sofa and a scrunched up dark blue blanket sat at the other end.

Did she sleep on the couch?

He looked through into the bedroom again, frowning at the smooth covers on the double bed.

Was that why he couldn’t feel her when he was in his bedroom?

Back when he had been watching over her from Heaven, she had always slept in her bed. Had something happened recently to change that? If it had, it must have occurred in the past month when he had been in the mortal realm. When he was here, he couldn’t watch over her as he had in Heaven, able to view her through buildings using the power granted to the angels of his division. He had to physically see her.

Amelia came back out of the room to his left. He dragged his gaze away from the bedroom and the bathroom next to it, and finished crossing the room to the open double doors that led into the kitchen. Her small kitchen was brighter than his, the cupboards a pale type of wood, with stainless steel appliances.

Some former owner of his apartment had deemed it stylish to have a dark kitchen. Marcus deemed it impractical. It was a nightmare to keep clean so he had given up feeding himself shortly after moving in and had resorted to eating take away food, instant meals or eating out.

Marcus leaned against the kitchen counter, his hand throbbing. It had been a while since he had felt physical pain. He couldn’t remember the last time it had hurt to punch something.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had fought someone.

Amelia placed a red and white chequered tea-towel down on the side and emptied out several trays of ice cubes into it. She gathered the ends and twisted the bulk of the cloth around to keep the ice in, and then came over to him. He started when she took hold of his hand, gently slipping her fingers under it so they brushed his palm, and raised it. Heat travelled up his arm and it had nothing to do with pain this time.

She rested the ice pack on his knuckles and he didn’t feel the cold at all. He stared at their joined hands, urgently trying to decipher how she had warmed him with only a light touch and alarmed by the hard beat of his heart against his chest. She looked up into his eyes, her grey ones full of warmth again, softening her delicate features and holding his attention.

“Thank you.” She glanced away again, her gaze briefly dropping to their hands and the ice pack, and then met his eyes. His pain faded in an instant, driven away by the heat of her touch and her concerned expression, and he marvelled at the effect she had on him. It wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. She was his duty and that was all she could ever be. Once he had fulfilled his mission, he would finally request his transfer and would never see her again. Her thumb brushed his and fire shimmered over his skin. “I really am sorry that he woke you and that you had to hit him.”

“I said it was nothing.” Marcus hadn’t needed to hit the man. He could have compelled him to stop but he had reacted on instinct, and for some reason that instinct had been to punch him. He could think of a million situations with mortals when he had been in danger and had compelled them. Why not this time?

Had Amelia’s presence as a witness deterred him?

Or was she the reason he had struck the man?

He had been consumed by anger, enraged by what the man had said about himself and Amelia, driven to violence by a handful of words.

He was Amelia’s protector. Her guardian.

He was not her lover.

Her fingertips grazed his palm as she removed the ice pack and inspected his left hand. A shiver tripped up his arm and down his spine, and his shoulder blades itched. He took his hand away from her and rolled his shoulders, trying to relieve the tension building there.

His wings wanted out.

“How are they feeling?”

Marcus’s head snapped up, his eyes immediately locking on Amelia. His wings? She nodded towards his knuckles and relief swept through him.

“Fine,” he said absently and breathed slowly to steady his racing heart.

There was no way she could know about his wings but, for a moment, it had felt as though she had been reading his mind. It had been a while since his wings had wanted to come out. After five centuries of living with them sealed away, he had grown used to them not being there. It had been strange becoming accustomed to them again when the binding curse had started to lose effect over thirty years ago. Most of the time, he was content to physically put them away as he was now. It took concentration to maintain their disappearance but it used less energy than hiding them from human eyes with a glamour, and it was far easier to move around in the mortal realm without worrying about accidentally knocking things over with them.

“Are you alright?” Amelia ducked towards him, interrupting his view of his knuckles and replacing it with an altogether more pleasant one of her face and her cleavage.

Marcus stared at her plump full breasts, his pulse picking up again, and then averted his eyes. Women had no shame. It was little wonder his master had decided that they should not serve him. They were wily, manipulative, a distraction, and considered by most as the source of all sin.

“Fine,” Marcus repeated and took the ice pack from her, ramming it onto the back of his hand when all he wanted to do was stick it down his jogging bottoms to bring his libido under control.

His fellow warriors had warned him about women, especially ones as beautiful as Amelia, and he wholeheartedly believed every word that they said. Women were dangerous. He would not falter though. Amelia was his mission and his allegiance was to his master, his loyalty to his duty, and nothing would change that.

Once this irksome mission had ended, he would return to Heaven and request his transferral as originally planned, and would join the ranks of the soldiers who protected the realm of Heaven from intruders and wars. He would defend that which he believed in. Not this mortal world, but his world.

He had never physically guarded a human before but was certain that his assignment to act as her next door neighbour was a sign that his mission was progressing and soon he would be free of it.

He couldn’t wait to return home.

“How are you feeling?” Marcus took the ice pack away from his hand and set it down in the stainless steel sink beside him.

Amelia shrugged. “Better, I guess.”

She didn’t look better. The weary edge was back in her eyes, draining them of warmth, and he found himself desiring to comfort her.

“He won’t come back.” His words had the desired effect and she brightened for a brief moment and then it faded again.

“You don’t know that.” She closed her eyes and shook her head. “I do pick them.”

Marcus turned and ran his hand under the cold water, letting it wash away the trace of blood on his knuckles. When he reached for the tap to shut it off again, he felt Amelia’s eyes on his bare back, boring into his shoulders, and lingered a moment. Would she mention the marks he had revealed by carelessly turning his back on her?

“It won’t be long before I drive you away too.”

Those words, softly spoken, caused him to look over his shoulder at her, a frown drawing his dark eyebrows tightly together. She dropped her gaze and then met his with resolution that didn’t surprise him. This was the Amelia he had come to know these past three decades. Strong, able to face anything head on, unflinching.

“What makes you say that?” Marcus turned back to face her, aware now that he was bare from the waist up and was probably only encouraging any attraction she might feel towards him. He should have put on a t-shirt before leaving his apartment but he’d had one thing on his mind—getting the irritating bastard in the hallway to shut up so he could sleep.

Or was it purely so he could sleep?

He stared at Amelia, taking in the way her cheeks coloured as he did so and how she couldn’t hold his gaze.

He had thought only of protecting her.

Defending her.

“The last bloke who lived alone next door to me left only a couple of months after moving in.”

Marcus knew for a fact that the man had been forcibly evicted due to a minor error in payments caused by Heaven’s intervention but had later won money on the lottery that had allowed him to place a down payment on the house of his dreams. The young man had been the easiest target to remove in order to place Marcus close to Amelia. The old lady who lived in the apartment on the other side of Amelia was frail and had lived in the building for over twenty years and relied on those around her to assist her. She also slept heavily, meaning that Amelia’s ex-boyfriends didn’t wake her when they came to knock down her door. Marcus would have had a contender in the guardian stakes if the young man had remained living next to her and they had moved the old lady.

“You do live alone, don’t you?” There was a tremble to that question.

Marcus nodded without thinking and then considered the implications of his answer when Amelia’s grey eyes warmed again. A loaded question. She had cleverly used it to discern his availability.

He briefly considered making up a girlfriend in order to obliterate any attraction she might feel towards him so he could continue his mission in peace but couldn’t get the words out when he looked into her eyes again.

The space between them shrank until it felt as though she was barely inches from him. Her soft breathing filled his ears, drawing his attention down to the sensual bow of her dusky pink lips. The tip of her tongue swept across them, leaving moisture in its wake, luring him in.

How long had it been since he had kissed a woman?

Not in this lifetime, that was for sure.

Marcus dragged his eyes away from her, shutting down his emotions at the same time. Amelia was a mission. He couldn’t allow things to become complicated. Not when he wasn’t even sure why he had to protect her.

He couldn’t get involved with her.

He had to maintain his distance.

No matter how impossible that seemed now.

No matter how much he wanted her.

Editing, designing, and actually some relaxing

I’ve been scatterbrained all week because I’m really absorbed in playing Assassins Creed: Brotherhood at the moment. Since my original PlayStation 3 went kaput with the red light of death post software update (and Sony denies that it could possibly have anything to do with that) and I had to get a new one, I wanted to play a game that I hadn’t started and lost the data for. AC: Brotherhood was that game. I think I’ll definitely end up re-playing the second Assassin’s Creed game too as I loved that one to pieces, and playing this one has opened a deep desire to play that one too.

I have managed to get some progress done on my second draft of Her Guardian Angel. The edit is coming along really well but I want to get it finished this week because I’m away on holiday for a few days next week. I don’t want to lose my flow with the story and know that I will if I suddenly have a break at such a critical moment. I have around 60 more pages to edit, but that includes beefing up a few scenes, and adding in a completely new scene to the ending to really magnify it and make it end on a more dramatic and satisfying conclusion. I can’t see it taking me too long to get it done, and I think I can definitely get it done this week if I’m good and can resist the lure of AC: Brotherhood long enough to actually get some decent work done.

I still haven’t decided whether I’ll be writing another story in this series. I need to weigh up everything I want to get done for next year and see if I have room for it, and see if there’s enough interest in the series when Her Guardian Angel hits virtual shelves. If there’s a good response to this novel, then I might write another novel in the series.

Aside from editing, I’ve been busy adding a new section to my website. I have a fun stuff section back in place now. At the moment, there’s just some computer desktop calendar wallpapers there. I’ll be adding more stuff as it comes to me. You can find it in the main menu of my website under the heading Goodies.

I’ve been busily writing down notes this week too, mostly for stories in the Hades’ Boys series, Vampires Realm series, or Shadow & Light Trilogy. I’m hoping to get some more books written for the latter two series soon, and also get the Hades’ Boys series started.

Part of my preparation for writing this new series, and continuing my writing in general, comes in the form of four new books that I purchased last week. I’ll review them here when I’m done with them and let everyone know what I thought about them, and whether I think they’re any good as tools in a writer’s toolbox. Here’s a list of the ones I’ve bought:

Characters and Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
Beginnings, Middles and Ends by Nancy Kress
20 Master Plots and how to build them by Ronald B Tobias
What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers by Anne Bernays and Pamela Painter

I’m mostly interested in the first two books at the moment. I also want to re-read some of my books that I love and keep on my shelves. Most of them are in the Write Great Fiction range and are really useful and insightful. I’ve learned plenty from them.

I think I’m going to read the first two books on this list before I write Masquerade, my next Vampires Realm novel/novella.

In other news, I’ve been busy formatting all the files for Forbidden Blood‘s release on June 18th. It’s going to be a manic release weekend for me as I’m away in Istanbul just before it and won’t have much time to prepare for the release. I’m hoping to get Forbidden Blood added to Smashwords and Amazon just before I go, so it should be available for purchase at those sites a few days before its official release. Not long now. I hope you’ve all been enjoying the sneak preview chapters of this book, and that you’ll rush out to buy it. It’s going to be a great new series for me. I’m debating whether to set up a mini-site for the series, a little like my Vampires Realm website.

That’s all from me for now. Excuse any typos as I’m tired and it’s cold in my office today, which makes typing difficult… and I really need to crack on with my work!

Her Guardian Angel second draft and blog tour

It’s been another mixed week for me here in castle Heaton. I started the week with a schedule for each day, and I’ve stuck to it for the most part, but there has been a little shift here and there between my set times for thing. I haven’t been spending as much time editing Her Guardian Angel as I should have been as I have so many guest blog spots coming up in my blog tour and I wanted to get ahead of the game and get lots of them done now.

I have another 6 or so to write and then I’m clear until the end of June. I’m hoping to get some of them written this weekend and then sent out. The crazy thing is I have around 18 blog dates for promoting Forbidden Blood and now I have to think of 18 unique things to do for them!

Monday and Tuesday was spent catching up on admin stuff and also addressing comments that I had made during my initial read through of Her Guardian Angel. I started out with 106 comments, mostly notes on improving areas, adding new stuff, repetition, and other things. I worked my way down to 13 major comments (generally layering more stuff into scenes or adding new stuff) and prepped for starting the full edit. I was meant to start that on Wednesday, but wound up writing blog posts and doing other stuff related to writing. I did start my edit again today, and have reached page 27 of 220. It doesn’t sound like much, but at this stage it’s good progress. I’m pleased with the story so far and it’s in good nick, so doesn’t need heavy editing, just polishing and tweaking, and paying attention to the details.

I also signed up to participate in Six Sentence Sunday, so watch out for my first one this Sunday, and sorted out my blog tour schedule, including adding new dates.

I think it’s been quite a productive week, and my muse is enjoying my new structured approach to my days, although I think he’d like a bit of a break for a few days. I think I’ve worked every day for the past couple of weeks, so I need some downtime and some rest. I did manage to get another book read this week. It was a Kindle freebie, Her Vampire Husband by Michele Hauf. Much better than the previous freebie I had read by her, Kiss Me Deadly, which I only gave 2 stars to and that was a push. This one gained 3 stars from me, and I would have given it 4 but I was a bit irritated by the heroine and the authors blatant attempts to make her sound young. I like a more mature kick-ass kind of heroine in my stories.

This week has also seen me thinking about my release schedule for next year, and also writing notes for the next book in the Shadow and Light Trilogy. The first book, Ascension, has been getting great reviews, so there’s all this pressure to make the next novel just as good, if not better, than it. I don’t mind a challenge, and I think the story I have in mind will appease readers and reviewers. There’ll be plenty of action and passion in this one too, and a very kick-ass Taig and Lealandra, and yeah, they might just go to Hell to find out what happened to Taig’s parents.

Other books I’ve been writing up notes for are When Darkness Falls which is a Vampires Realm story I’ll be writing for next year, and also my Hades’ Boys series. I’m really hoping to start writing that series this year and to get the first couple of books in it released next year. It’s going to be a kick-ass series and I think everyone will really like the heroes in it, and the heroines too because they’ll do their share of kicking butt, or at least assisting to kick butt.

I think next year is going to be as full of paranormal romance books as this year is for me. I wish I could find the time to write another science fiction romance, but I have to focus on what my muse is into, and at the moment it’s vampires, demons, and gods, with the odd angel tossed in for good measure.

I also think next year is going to be a year for series books. At the moment, I’m planning to release the Shadow and Light Trilogy #2.5 and Shadow and Light Trilogy #3. Book 2.5 in the series is a novella focusing on another two characters in the series. Alongside those two books, I’ll release another Vampire Venators story, as well as one or two Vampires Realm stories. I’m debating whether to write another novel or novella in the Her Angel series. I do have a character in mind for one, but I’m not sure whether it’s novel or novella material. He’s in the Her Guardian Angel novel, so you’ll get to meet him then. I’ll judge whether to continue the series when that one is released.

Last up for next year is my Hades’ Boys. I need to design a website for it, gather all my materials, and also prepare other stuff for it. It’s going to be a very big series of seven novels. I have the first three roughly planned, and their place in the overall arc that runs through the series. I think the characters are basically there now, with only a little more work needed on them. I’ve been working on this series in the background since 2007 or maybe 2008. It’s been years anyway. It’s probably about time that I wrote it, and I feel I’m in a place now where I can justify writing it and I feel I’ll make a top job of it. I’ve been reluctant before now because I wanted to write it when I was at the top of my game, and had learned enough about writing to produce something amazing with this series. All seven books will be linked, although there’ll be individual baddies for each hero to fight, but those baddies will all be part of the same team, and I’ll reveal little by little who the big bad is behind everything. Just talking about it makes me want to write it!

Back to work for me.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is the third chapter of Forbidden Blood on Sneak Peek Saturday. There’s only 21 days left before this book is released in e-book, and shortly afterwards in paperback.

Also, don’t forget to enter my 500 BLOG FOLLOWERS INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY if you haven’t already. Following the instructions on the giveaway page. Invite your friends too. We’re up to 375 followers now, so there’s only another 25 to go before we reach the next level of prizes!

adventures in paranormal romance and blog giveaway

Well, it’s been an eventful week, but at the same time, not very eventful. Time seems to be slipping away from me at the moment and my motivation is hitting a low spot. I have so much that I need to do, that it sort of piles up and then overwhelms me. I have decided that it’s not easy having releases only 4-6 weeks apart. I’ll have to address that next year. I just don’t feel as though I’m putting enough into promoting each separate book. As soon as a new one come along, I forget to promote the previous one. Bad me. That’s not the way to sell books!

I was distracted from my work last week because Reunion was listed as FREE at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, so I was promoting that when I probably should have been continuing to promote my paid-for releases like Love Immortal, Hunter’s Moon, and Ascension. All three are available in e-book and paperback now.

This week, I spent the Monday and Tuesday doing the initial read through of Her Guardian Angel, the fourth book but the first novel in the Her Angel romance series. On Wednesday, I inputted all of the changes I’d noted down on the book (I read on paper initially as it gives me a better experience during this phase when I’m supposed to read as a reader would, not an editor or writer) into the word document, so it’s ready to go. There’s over 100 comments to address, but most of those are about repetition of words / thoughts / feelings. I also have some smoothing out to do in the latter half of the book, and I want to change the ending to make it more dramatic. I’m not sure if this will be the finale of the series, or whether I’ll write another novel for it. I do have a character in mind for another novel or novella, but I need to take stock of the success of the series. I guess if Her Guardian Angel sells well and people make positive noises about wanting another or liking the character I have in mind for it (who appears in Her Guardian Angel), then I’ll probably write the next book.

I’m also trying to decide what to write for December. I have a release slot penned down on my schedule. I was thinking about writing the next Shadow and Light Trilogy novel, which will follow on from Ascension and track the progression of Lealandra and Taig’s relationship. I could also write the next Vampire Venators series novel. Both require some world building. It definitely won’t be a Vampires Realm series book as I’ve had two of those this year. Don’t worry, I’m hoping I can write two more Vampires Realm stories for next year. That’s the downside to series. I have four on the go at the moment (well, that I’m actively working on anyway), plus another two that I want to start, one of which is my seven book Hades’ Boys series. With all those series to balance, it’s difficult to keep my schedule in order. I think next year will definitely be very series-orientated, even though I have a few stand alone paranormal romance books that I want to write.

I did manage to get some downtime this week. Husband and I went out yesterday to the cinema and watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 3D. It was good. Probably up there with the best movies I’ve seen this year. Definitely blockbuster material, and Johnny Depp was fantastic as usual. Did some shopping afterwards and went to Yo! Sushi for scrummy pumpkin korroke and doroyaki.

Today I should be working on the second draft edit for Her Guardian Angel, but I’ll spend it writing blog tour posts as that’s quite a weight pressing down on me and I’d like to get a whole bunch of them written and sent off so they’re not playing on my mind and I’ll be able to focus on my edit.

Oh, and I started my 500 Blog Follower International Giveaway this week. We’ve reached around 330 followers now, and I’m thrilled by how quickly my followers have risen and touched by the effort some readers have been putting in to help me spread the news about this giveaway. You guys rock, and you rock hard!

I’ve also had a great review or two for Ascension, and my other novels. It’s great to get reviews coming in for them. I’ll try to take snippets of them soon and add them to my website for everyone to read. Sometimes it’s difficult to get a good snippet though.

Wow, this has turned into a long blog post.

What shall I write for December?

Her Guardian Angel, Masquerade and more

It’s been a while since I just sat down and wrote about what I’ve been up to, and I’ve been meaning to do a catch up post for a few weeks now. Things were hectic for me in April. I was still arranging dates and appearances for my ongoing Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour (if you’re a book blog interested in hosting me at all, do get in touch – felicity_heaton (at) yahoo (dot) co (dot) uk – as I’m always looking for more places to do interviews, articles, and get reviews done for my books) and I was trying to get the first draft of Her Guardian Angel written before my trip to Barcelona at the start of May.

Her Guardian Angel was the first book I had written since giving up my day job to focus on my writing and it’s been a bit of a struggle to grow accustomed to working from home on a novel. I was pleased with the amount of words I could get down onto paper, well screen at least, by being in my office at home without interruptions. I just need to find a balance between writing and the admin side of things when I’m actively working on a book. When I write, I just want to write and that’s all. Once I get going, everything else drifts into the background and I have a tendency to just ignore it. Of course, it’s hard to ignore all the emails, articles, interviews, etc when they pile up. Then I end up switching to admin mode for days on end to clear the backlog. What I need to do is strike a balance between writing and admin. I think I’ll get there in the end, but it’s something that isn’t going to happen overnight.

The good thing is that the first draft of Her Guardian Angel, the fourth book in my Her Angel series and the first novel length outing, is now complete at 92000 words, and that I got it done before I went away. I didn’t want to have to come back from holiday and try to pick up right at the end of the book and finish it. That would have been very difficult to do without reading quite a large chunk of it back, which would have taken time out of my schedule. I’m pleased with how it has turned out, but I know there’s a few places where I need to fix it up a bit, or iron out some wrinkles at least. That’s what the second draft is for.

The second draft on this angel romance book will be done when it’s had time to rest, which gives me time to write my next novel, or novella.

At the moment, I’m working on Masquerade, which is book number 10 in my Vampires Realm series. I think it’s likely to be a long novella, somewhere around 50000 words in total. Just shy of a novel. I have the story planned and this time we’re in St Petersburg with the Venia bloodline for a very special Creator Day masquerade. I’ll get to write plenty of old faces in this one, which I’m really looking forward to. I’ve managed to get the first chapter done today despite my muse’s protests. He’s tired from our holiday and having guests over, and just wants to slack off this week.

There’s not much chance of that happening though. I not only have the first draft of Masquerade to get into, but I’m putting together designs for promotional material for prize packs as I have a few big giveaways coming up and want to get some postcards, bookmarks, keyrings, magnets and other items made. I’m also knee-deep in articles and interviews that need my attention. There’s no rest for the wicked it seems. I’ve had my week off and now I’m back in the thick of it.

I have been enjoying the chance to devour a few books over the past week though, and managed to read two of them. I’ll try to get my reviews written up for them and posted soon.

Back to work I go… just wanted to drop by and let you all know what I’ve been up to so you can get a feel for all the crazy stuff that goes into writing my books 🙂

Ascension and Forbidden Blood

Hello everyone… it’s been a while since my last blog, over a week in fact. Sorry about that, but I have a reasonable excuse.

Last week I was busy busting a gut getting Ascension polished up and ready for release. I managed to get it done in a week, but they were some seriously long days at Starbucks. I’m still a bit worn out from all the intense focus work and there’s no time for rest as I need to use this week to get a lot of admin stuff done. I’m talking about things like arranging guest blogging, formatting files, catching up with my emails, and other things I have to do. Ascension is now in good shape though, and thanks to the lovely four ladies who have critiqued it for me, I feel it’s in top condition and ready for sale once I’ve done a final proof on it.

I’ve also been busy with proofing Forbidden Blood and getting sick. Catching a pesky cold was not on my agenda and it really slowed me down the week before last when I was trying to get a lot of stuff done. In fact, it slowed me down so much that my proof of Forbidden Blood ended up taking most of the week! Crazy. I should be able to get a book that size proofed in a couple of days.

I don’t think it helps that it was also my first week of trying to do writing related stuff since I became a full time author. I hadn’t quite settled in to working from home yet and it was easy to get distracted. That’s why I spent all last week in Starbucks, as I knew I could focus there and would speed through my work and get back on schedule. I’m now back on track, but I still have a lot of the admin type stuff to get done.

To be honest, I can’t wait to get writing again. Editing and proofing is one thing, but nothing beats writing. I miss it. I can’t remember when I last wrote something, rather than edited or proofed. It must have been Hunter’s Moon late last year! I’m more than overjoyed that once I put together the outline plan for Her Guardian Angel, I’ll be writing it. That should start early next week, so I’ll probably be around a bit less at first until I can gauge whether I’ll hit my deadline for it.

I guess all authors wish they could just write and then hand everything else over to someone else to worry about but that’s just not possible when you’re an indie, and in reality it probably isn’t even possible for best selling NYT authors. They still have to read the book back to ensure it makes sense and works, and do edits.

Still, I have a few books to write for this year, so I’ll be sinking my fangs into them ASAP and getting back into being an author again and worrying less about the admin stuff!

Hope you’re all having a great time. Spring has truly sprung here and the days are sunny at last. It’s been a few weeks since we had rain, although I wouldn’t mind some for my garden! Poor plants are trying to grow but the weather just isn’t giving up the wet stuff they need.

Keep your eyes peeled for a cover post this week… I’ll be putting up the cover of Forbidden Blood for everyone to see.

Plans for 2011 writing and Forbidden Blood

I’m listing to Pete Murray… he makes me think of beautiful Australia… and sunny Cairns… and steals me away from the frosty chill of London.

Well, having finished the read through of Forbidden Blood, it’s fairly clear that it’s going to be the next book I’ll release after Hunter’s Moon. Forbidden Blood is in good shape, with only minor things to address, so I’ll be able to get the polish edit done on it by the date of my ear operation (February 10th). It’s a novel length vampire romance book, currently around 110,000 words. I’m quite excited about releasing it and I keep thinking about writing another book set in the world I’ve created for it. I think readers will enjoy the story though and I can’t wait to release it.

My never ending schedule change is still in progress too. Now that Forbidden Blood is set as the March 26th release, I have to think about the next one. I have a slot on May 7th that I want to use for a pay-for book rather than a freebie. At the moment, I’m set to release Ascension then, which is a witch / demon paranormal romance book, sort of urban fantasy romance.

I’m still planning to release 11 stories in 2011. 8 of those will be pay-for stories and 3 of them will be free ebooks. I’m going to write two stories for my A Day in the Life series, and another story in my Eternity series (Hyperion’s history – sub-series of the Vampires Realm series). I’m also going to polish up the Eternity covers to have them match the other Vampires Realm ones.

At the moment, we’re looking at this sort of ordering for the pay-for stories, with the release dates flexible:

February 26th 2011 – Hunter’s Moon
The next story in the Vampires Realm series, Hunter’s Moon takes us away from Europe to the wilderness of Canada, where Tatyana, a vampire of the Nocens bloodline of Budapest, finds herself at the mercy of an ex-alpha and ex-compound werewolf, Nicolae. And the guy has a serious chip on his shoulder. Sparks will fly!

March 26th 2011 – Forbidden Blood
A dark vampire romance novel, Forbidden Blood is set in London and follows the vampire hero, Kearn, as he fights to catch a man he’s been after for three years. His elusive opponent appears before him in a London back street but a young beautiful woman named Amber hinders Kearn and the man escapes. But all is not lost. The enemy has given Amber a taste of his blood in order to control her and if Kearn’s suspicions are correct, he’ll come after her again. A decision to use her as bait turns into a struggle against a dangerous attraction as they fight to defeat the enemy and protect her life.

May 7th 2011 – Ascension
Ascension is an urban fantasy romance novel, mixing one stubborn half-demon hero, Taig, with his ex-lover and just as stubborn witch heroine, Lealandra. When her life is threatened and her Counter-Balance is killed, Lealandra turns to Taig for protection, but 6 years has done nothing to heal the hurt she caused by leaving him for another man and the coven, and he’s not about to help her without her paying a high price! Lealandra understands why Taig is acting up, but she hasn’t touched another man in all the years they’ve been apart. Her heart has remained constant, and only Taig has been in it. Seeing the pain she caused, Lealandra works to soothe it and hopes to finally help Taig face the issues he has about his demonic heritage and open his heart to her.

July 30th 2011 – Her Guardian Angel
The only novel in the Her Angel series, Her Guardian Angel promises to be a thrill ride from page one. Bringing back all of the angels from the first three novellas, this story is packed full of danger and intrigue, and a hero who will steal your heart. Marcus isn’t interested in his new role of protecting Amelia and posing as her neighbour, but when the two start to grow closer and Marcus discovers that Amelia is about to die, it becomes a race against time to save her life. But will he be successful? Can he stop something that has been foretold?

September 10th 2011 – Heart of Darkness
Set in the beautiful city of Prague in the dead of winter, Heart of Darkness is a novel of passion and possession. Aleksandr, once a prince of his vampire kind, has spent four centuries relentlessly pursuing the relatives of the man who murdered his sister and the constant bloodshed is taking its toll on him, turning him towards the darkness and into the beast all vampires once were. Battling the darkness after killing another hunter, Aleksandr meets Elise, a guard of the Cerny bloodline, and she instantly drives the black from his heart and his mind, restoring his balance. Curiosity about the effect she has on him, and her beauty, drive him to pursue her, but the charm that had once helped him have any woman he wanted fails to have an effect on Elise. If he wants to win her, he will have to change his ways and learn how modern men pursue the women they are falling in love with, but it’s a race against time as the darkness threatens to take control. Only Elise’s love can save him, but even then will it be enough when he faces the last hunter and the end of his vendetta?

October 22nd 2011 – Masquerade
The second story being released in the Vampires Realm series in 2011, Masquerade follows two elite guards as they battle both the threat of vampire hunters and their apparent hatred for each other to protect the lords and ladies of all the pure bloodlines of Europe at the Creator Day masquerade ball! But hate is so close to love, and a dance whilst hidden behind a mask can lead from one thing to another…

December 3rd 2011 – Hellcat
A hunter by trade, he can’t resist the lure of a rare species, but is it wise to fall for a Hellcat? This shape-shifting kitty isn’t about to be caught, certainly not by a hunter, and definitely not by the alpha cat pursuing her across the globe, but the two men might just cancel each other out. It takes little more than a flicker of charm and a sultry smile to win the hunter over, but will he be able to keep her rightful mate off her tail long enough for her to escape? And why the heck is she feeling guilty about using the guy for protection?

There’ll be the three free ebooks in there somewhere too.

I’ll also be squeezing in time this year to write a new Vampires Realm novel for release in early 2012 and the first couple of stories in my Hades’ Boys series… which isn’t the real title. lol. It’s a series of 7 books about some seriously sexy alpha gods (all brothers – their mamma is very proud of her strapping lads) intent on stopping our world and theirs from colliding! I’ll be releasing all 7 novels over 2012, 2013 and 2014. Expect to be blown away.

romance e-book releases in 2011

I didn’t get a chance to update my blog at the weekend other than posting my new covers, which have received some seriously positive feedback from readers. Thanks to everyone who replied about them. It’s wonderful to hear your views.

I had wanted to talk more about my upcoming releases. 2011 has 11 planned releases, although at the moment there are only 10 definites. They’re all paranormal romance e-books, but there’s a chance that a sci-fi romance novel might sneak its way into the mix. I have so many ideas for stories at the moment that it’s difficult to tell which will be story number 11.

Here’s a breakdown of my planned releases as it stands. This list is subject to change but mostly that means some might get their dates shifted or switched around.

January 15th 2011 – Love Immortal
Love Immortal is a long paranormal romance novel that mixes vampires,Greek mythology, werewolves, and humans with phenomenal powers into one potent and action-packed book! I think everyone is going to really enjoy this one and I’m very excited about its release. From next week, I’ll be posting a chapter per week at a special blog I’ve set up for the story. Keep your eyes peeled for it!

February 12th 2011 – Hunter’s Moon
Hunter’s Moon will be my Valentine’s Day release of 2011. The next story in the Vampires Realm series, it takes us away from Europe to the wilderness of Canada, where Tatyana, a vampire of the Nocens bloodline of Budapest, finds herself at the mercy of an ex-alpha and ex-compound werewolf, Nicolae. And the guy has a serious chip on his shoulder. Sparks will fly!

March 26th 2011 – Ascension
Ascension is an urban fantasy romance novel, mixing one stubborn half-demon hero, Taig, with his ex-lover and just as stubborn witch heroine, Lealandra. When her life is threatened and her Counter-Balance is killed, Lealandra turns to Taig for protection, but 6 years has done nothing to heal the hurt she caused by leaving him for another man and the coven, and he’s not about to help her without her paying a high price! September 10th 2011 – Darkness & Light
A longer and improved adaptation of my previous and first release in the Tri-Kingdom series, Darkness & Light.

September 10th 2011 – The Night
An improved adaptation of my previous and second release in the Tri-Kingdom series, The Night.

October 22nd 2011 – Heart of Darkness

Phew, that was a lot of writing! Now I just have to decide which story to write for the eleventh one!

🙂

An admin week for me…

It feels as though it’s been a bit of an admin week for me. I spent most of the week working on articles and interviews for various sites. A few people have asked me to talk about the Her Angel series, but a couple asked me to write about my journey as a self-publishing / independent author. Now, most of you out there know that I’ve been self-publishing my stories for four years now, since 2006, and in that time I have written around 40 stories… but I don’t like to shout about how well I’ve done or tout what experience I have as though I’m an expert. I prefer to write stories and let them do the talking. Those were the difficult articles for me to write. I was fine when they wanted me to talk about my romance books, but the moment I actually had to write about me, I didn’t know what to put!

As well as writing articles and filling out interviews, I’ve been proofing Her Warrior Angel ahead of its release on November 20th. The schedule for my past few stories has been tight so I’m looking forward to 2011 when I have more time planned in for my stories and the schedule is looking better. I don’t like it when I have to cram in proofing and polishing. It doesn’t feel good.

Next week I’m going to be writing the outline for Her Guardian Angel, the novel in the Her Angel series, and I’ll be doing some research for Masquerade. Masquerade is another Vampires Realm story but unlike Hunter’s Moon, it involves characters that we’ve met before and places we’ve been before in the series, so I have to do some research on what those places look like and refresh my memory about the characters I’m including in this story. There’s quite a few old faces that will be making an appearance. I’m sure it’ll excite everyone to see them again.

After I’ve done some plotting for Her Guardian Angel and Masquerade, I’m going to be proofing Love Immortal. And after that I’m going on holiday! Literally. December is going to be a busy month for me again. I’m going to try to get the second draft of Hunter’s Moon done and also the first draft of Masquerade, although I might switch that out for some reading. I really need to read the stack of novels I was bought for my birthday in April!

I have archery today… I’m looking forward to that. I think I’m getting better at it. I beat the men last week, which is always a nice feeling. Watch out world! I’m deadly with a recurve bow. Maybe I’m channelling my inner vampire hunter.

🙂
