Nicolae started when Tatyana leaned towards him. Her brown eyes brightened, turning the colour of amber flecked with gold, and her lips parted. The barest hint of fang showed between them. She slipped her hand down to his jaw, her fingers softly stroking the line of it, and then trailed them over his throat. He swallowed when she peeled off the sticking plasters on the curve of his left shoulder and her gaze fell to the marks they had hidden.

What was she going to do?

â€œI will not bite you,â€ she whispered in a voice so barely there that he wondered if he had imagined her speaking, and then lowered her head and ran her tongue over the bite mark.

He shivered. A wave of desire chased through him, spreading outwards from the point where her tongue caressed his flesh, and he rolled his eyes closed. Instinct said to push her away, that she was lying and she was only after his blood. She would bite him. The rest of him said to let her stay, that she only meant to help him as he had helped her.

She licked his neck again, slowly as though savouring the taste of him. With each sweep of her tongue, the spark inside him grew hotter, steadily turning to flames that burned in his blood and then into an inferno that drove him to beg her to surrender to her hunger and taste his blood properly. He wanted to feel her lips around the marks, ached to have her suck on the wound and draw his blood into her body. It was wrong of him to feel anything like he did for her after the living hell that the vampires had put him through, but he wanted her.

Images of her danced across his closed eyes, flashbacks to ways she had looked at him tonight with dark desire in her eyes. Was she thinking the impossible too? Did she want him?

He bit back a groan when she placed her hands on his bare chest, cool against his burning skin, and licked his throat harder.

â€œYou are not healing,â€ she sighed into his ear.

Nicolae knelt before her, lost, drifting on the feel of her touching him, teasing him with her tongue.

â€œVampire bites are a pain in the backside,â€ he said distantly, feeling as though he wasnâ€™t quite with the world. He was floating somewhere between Heaven and Hell, battling the forbidden desire to feel her fangs in his throat. No good would come of it. Barely hours ago, he had vowed that he would never let her do that again, and now he was dying for her to go through with it. If he let her, he wasnâ€™t sure how he would end up feeling about it. She was the enemy. Her kind had put him through so much endless pain and suffering. How could he so easily forget it?

It was as though she was erasing it from his mind piece by piece with each sweep of her tongue over his skin.

â€œWerewolf ones arenâ€™t much better,â€ she said with a smile in her voice and then lowered her mouth back to his throat.

And sucked.

And damn, it felt as though pure bliss was running through his veins. Nicolae couldnâ€™t fight it anymore. He buried his left hand into her hair, tangling the golden threads tightly around his fingers, and held her against his throat. She sucked again, sending another wave of pleasure rippling through him, and then licked the wound.

Every thought heâ€™d entertained when she had touched him earlier and then said that he hated her came crashing back. He held her near as he had wanted to then, no longer afraid of being so close to her. It fed his desire to touch her, to lower his mouth and kiss her bare shoulder and then her cheek.

And then her lips.

He burned with the need to gather her closer still and feel her cool soft body against his.

What was he doing? He had barely known her a moment, not even a full day, but he ached with a fierce need to possess and protect her.

He had felt a glimmer of the feelings now pounding through his blood when he had first seen her in the woods.

Then, it had driven him to care for her and save her.

Now, it compelled him to kiss her and beg her to kiss him.

A vampireâ€™s kiss.

His breathing turned heavy. â€œOur species just arenâ€™t made for getting along.â€

She raised her head and her cheek brushed his, her breath teasing his ear. â€œI think we can get along.â€

God, he wanted to surrender to her but he couldnâ€™t. He couldnâ€™t let her bite him, not yet, not now. If she did it while she was still healing, he would never know whether she had bitten him because she had desired him or whether everything had been done out of a need for fresh blood in order to heal.

It was bad enough living with the knowledge that he felt something for her. He didnâ€™t think he could bear trying to live knowing that she had used him for blood and he had been foolish enough not to realise that was all she had wanted from him. He could endure the memory of what the compounds had done to him, the physical torment the vampires had put him through, but he wouldnâ€™t be able to endure such direct emotional torture by one of her kind. It would break him.
