Her Demonic Angel – First draft progress and an introduction to the hero and heroine!

I should have updated my blog earlier about my progress on Her Demonic Angel but I’ve just had one of those weeks where it’s been one thing after another and I haven’t really been in a writing mood. I was off on Monday, having a day with my husband, in which we managed to watch three movies at the cinema. Impressive! I was so tired by the end of it and had to drive back in fog and icy conditions. Not fun.

Tuesday my husband was at home and I can’t concentrate when he’s around, so I didn’t write. Instead I filled my day with making adverts for websites and dealing with everything else I normally neglect in favour of writing.

Wednesday I was finally able to get back to writing but it was a strange day as I spent most of it at the hospital waiting on my appointments ahead of my next ear operation this month. Not fun, again. I make a point of never reading while I’m writing as I find I’m easily influenced by what I read and end up writing like someone else. I had been reading over what I had written of Her Demonic Angel and I had another 30 pages to read post-ear-appointments so I felt it was safe to stick my nose in a book on my phone. I was there so long that I had read 60% of the book by the time I was free to go.

I hit the cafe and finally wrote the first love scene in Her Demonic Angel. I always find the first love scene is the most difficult one to write as it establishes the whole dynamic between the couple when it comes to lovemaking. This one was pretty deep, quite primal and very sexy.

I finished reading the book I had begun in the hospital over breakfast this morning, getting it out of the way, and hit the cafe to get some more writing done. I feel I’ve been quite slow with this book. A little out of sorts and unsure over the past few writing outings to the cafes. I’m second guessing everything I write and that isn’t like me. I need to get my confidence back a little. Reading the book back normally does that for me and I do feel it’s pretty damn good so far, but I’m still a little on edge about it. I feel I’m being really slow but when I finally stopped writing, I had done 11000 words. Sure, it was over a 6 hour period, but it’s still a fairly good word count for the day. I’m now at 53000 words in the book and things are really taking shape now and some pretty huge stuff as happened, and is about to happen too. I have 8 more writing days available before my ear operation takes me out of action for a couple of weeks. I have to get other stuff done too, but I think I can get this book completed in first draft and that will be a weight off my mind. I’m sure my slowness and weird feelings are just because I’m feeling quite stressed by the short and looming deadline, and my impending operation.

I promised to share some Veiron teases in this blog post, so I’ve dug out some very Veiron moments. I’ve also dug out some very Erin moments…

Erin first…

Erin’s better judgement said not to but she slipped her trembling right hand into his and stepped away from the edge. She looked up into his eyes. They glowed red around the edges and in the centre too, highlighting his wide pupils. His gaze locked with hers and rocked her with a jolt that reached right down into her soul.

“What’s your name?” she whispered, captivated by his eyes and lost in them. They had more power over her than the Devil’s had. She wanted to stare into the flaming depths for all eternity.

“Veiron,” he husked, his warm breath caressing her face, and Erin’s senses came alive, lighting up like an electrical storm. His masculine scent of dirt, aftershave and fresh sweat filled her nostrils. The warmth of his hand clasping hers heated her right down to her bones. The sound of his voice made her blood burn to hear him speak again. Her gaze delighted in discovering every tiny fleck of fire in his dark irises. The only sense left was one that cried out for a taste of him.

She might be losing her mind, but she knew without a doubt that she wanted this man.

And Veiron… his scene is a bit longer, because I’m loving this former good guys internal debates. He’s so fun to write. He’s with Erin in a small cave, and she’s confessed she always has nightmares when she sleeps, so she doesn’t want to sleep.

“You didn’t have a nightmare when you were in my arms.” He wasn’t sure why he put that one out there. Tormenting himself? He was the big bad hero who chased away little Erin’s nightmares and made everything right. Her knight in tarnished armour. Yeah, right. It didn’t matter what he did. As soon as she realised he was one of those bastards she hated so much, it would be game over and goodbye Veiron. Kill it before it started. It was the only way to save himself.

“I didn’t. Can I sleep next to you?”

“Sure.” Way to resist and keep that all necessary distance between them. What was it about this woman that had him going against his better judgement?

Erin moved closer, flashed him a tired but grateful smile, and settled on her side with her head on his thigh. Hell. He warned the part of his anatomy that she had chosen to snuggle up right next to not to get ideas. Those dirty thoughts spinning out of control in his mind were not going to happen.

Do not touch her. Do not lay a hand on that smooth but dirty slender arm of hers and stroke it to see if her skin felt as soft as it looked. Do not.

Veiron ran his fingers along the length of her arm.

“Veiron,” she whispered, his name like ambrosia to his aching soul as it fell softly from her lips. “I can’t sleep. Talk to me.”

“What about?” Any subject but himself. Keep it professional. Keep some distance. Any subject but himself.

“About you.”

“Sure.” Fuck. Why didn’t he smash his fist through his ribcage and tear out his heart right now to save himself the inevitable pain in his future?

“Are you fallen?”

He grimaced.

“You don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to,” she said and tipped her head up, rolling slightly onto her back so she was looking at him. “Tell me if I’m being too nosy.”

He didn’t want to answer it, and she damn well was being too nosy.

“I am,” he said rather than refusing her and wished she would go to sleep. He shouldn’t have woken her. He should have tried to carry her down the slope. He might have made it to the ledge even with her extra weight rather than tumbling into a volcanic abyss.

Veiron looked down at the bubbling flame-filled plain below. Fiery painful death was beginning to look good but dying was off the menu. Not going to happen. Death meant rebirth, and rebirth meant a return to Heaven and forgetting everything until he fell again.

Did you enjoy your Erin and Veiron moments? Looking forward to the book now? I’d love to know!

Sunday Snippets from my paranormal romance books

Look, I’ve made it two Sundays in a row with my Sunday Snippets. Now that I have a schedule for them, I don’t have an excuse for not posting them.

I’m going to share another snippet from my latest erotic vampire romance novella, Covet, the first book in my new Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series, as I’m very into this series at the moment.

Javier’s gaze fell to her mouth.

He wanted to kiss her. His blood burned with the need until it bordered on controlling him but couldn’t bring himself to go through with it. To kiss her would be to violate her. Not the bond with her master, but her purity. Just the thought of her soft mouth on his made him feel like a beast. If he kissed her, he wasn’t sure he could retain control.

“What’s wrong?” she whispered and he heard the hurt in her voice, saw it in her beautiful golden eyes when his leapt to them. Her eyebrows furrowed and she touched his cheek, fingertips burning his flesh, the scent of her blood filling his senses. His fangs dropped, pressing against his lips. He saw in her eyes the moment his changed, bloodlust swamping his irises and turning his pupils elliptical.

He raised a trembling hand and ran his thumb across her lower lip, and even that small caress was almost too much for him, branding her name on his soul.

“I want to kiss you,” he uttered and her eyes dropped to his mouth. “Would you let a monster like me ruin you?”

I hope you enjoyed this Sunday Snippet!

Six Sentence Sunday – A sexy snippet from Her Guardian Angel – angel romance novel

My Six Sentence Sunday today is from my previous release, Her Guardian Angel, the fourth book and first novel in my best selling Her Angel romance series.

Please take a moment after reading and commenting (comments are nice) to visit the Six Sentence Sunday site to find the other great authors who are participating, or check out the #sixsunday tag on Twitter!

A little scene setting: Marcus is an angel charged with the task of watching over Amelia, a mortal female. When she’s attacked by demons, Marcus saves her and reveals his true identity in the process. The scene takes place in Amelia’s inner world, where she has been sent to shield her from being detected by the forces after her, and she’s been swimming with Marcus and they’re together in the warm moonlit water.

Marcus ran his tongue along the seam of Amelia’s mouth and she opened to him, her tongue coming out to play with his and tease it inside. He slanted his head and claimed her mouth, plundering it with his tongue and drawing another heated groan from her.

She shifted against him, pressing closer until her warm body was flush against his, driving him mad with the need to caress every inch of her, to taste her and seek out her sensitive spots with his lips. The water lapped at his waist, knocking against him, and he turned with her and carried her back to the beach.

The moment he was clear of the water, he laid her down on the hard sand and covered her body with his. The heat of her overwhelmed him, pushing his desire to new heights, and he moaned into her mouth as she scored her nails over his scalp and then tangled her fingers in his hair, anchoring him to her.

I hoped you all enjoyed it!

Her Guardian Angel
Felicity Heaton
A simple mission becomes a fight for survival in this fantastic instalment in the Her Angel series.

A guardian angel dedicated to his duty, Marcus will do whatever Heaven asks of him, but even his loyalty has its limits. When his superior orders him to gain Amelia’s trust through seduction, Marcus starts to question his mission and his feelings for the beautiful woman he has watched over since her birth.

Amelia has gone from one bad relationship to another, so when a gorgeous guy moves in next door looking like Mr Right, she hopes he doesn’t turn out to be another black knight in disguise. But there’s more to Marcus than meets the eye, and when he rescues her from three demonic men, Amelia is thrust into his nightmarish world—a world where God and the Devil exist, and only one angel can save her from death—Marcus, the angel she’s falling in love with.

On the run from demonic angels and the Devil himself, aided by Marcus’s angel friends and their amazing women, fighting for survival against the odds, Marcus and Amelia discover a love that will last forever.

A love so strong it will shake Heaven and Hell.

Signed Swag Giveaway – Guess the Heroes!

I was playing this on my Facebook but it’s a dangerous place to play it since FB is weird about such things, so I’m moving it here.

You can win yourself some signed book swag by commenting and telling me which hero in the Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series said which line.

I will choose 2 winners per quote, so 12 winners in total! Open internationally.

Your choices of hero are: Javier, Callum, Antoine, Snow, Andreu and Payne.

Match the right hero with the right quote by commenting with the quote number + name of the hero you think it is!

Quotes:

#1 – “I wanted to sink my fangs into you when we were together on the stage… I still want to now.”

#2 – “I could tell her that you wet the bed until you were in your thirties.”

#3 – “It would appear I am addictive.”

#4 – “This one is missing a few pieces of her puzzle, if you get what I mean. Not only did she breeze straight in here to catch the show, but she sucked your face.”

#5 – “As regrettable as it is to get you out of this sexy little number… it has to come off. I want to sleep next to you.”

#6 – “Whatever my love wants, my love will have.”
COMPETITION CLOSED!

THE ANSWERS WERE:
#1 – Antoine
#2 – Snow
#3 – Andreu
#4 – Payne
#5 – Callum
#6 – Javier

The characters with the most correct matches were Snow, followed by Javier. I think this is because you all presumed someone talking about another as a kid had to be Snow, but Javier is Andreu’s older brother you know 😉

The characters with the least correct matches were Andreu and Payne, but that doesn’t surprise me since you haven’t met them yet. I’m surprised more people matched Antoine correctly than Callum.

WINNERS SELECTED AT RANDOM WERE:

katrina whittaker
michelle louise pratley
Filia Oktarina
Sharonwade101
Amber Hall
cherity
Raynekitten
Jodie P.
Kiwi Lloyd
Becky3120
Kristina Haecker
Tanyaw1224

Winners, please contact me at author(at)felicityheaton(dot)co(dot)uk with your mailing address, and let me know what swag you already have from me so we don’t double up!

Only 1 person got all six right somehow, and that was Katrina Whittaker! I don’t know how you did it! Average correct guesses were 2 or 3.

Saturday Snippets from my Paranormal Romance Books

Yes, it’s back as promised! I am feeling super tired today but I wanted to keep my promise and post a Saturday Snippet! As always, it’s a short snippet of a scene from one of my paranormal romance books.

Today I’m offering a snippet of a scene from Her Guardian Angel, the fourth angel romance book in my best selling Her Angel romance series.

Marcus rolled onto his back, bringing her with him, and stopped kissing her. He frowned at the duvet wedged between them and tugged at it. Amelia raised herself so the blanket came free and then sighed when he pulled her back against him, his bare body warming hers. It was so easy to forget everything when he kissed her. He wasn’t an angel and she wasn’t in danger. It all seemed so distant and irrelevant.

She kissed him again, teasing him with sweeps of her lips that barely grazed his. He made a short noise of frustration, snaked his hand around the nape of her neck, and brought her mouth down on his. The kiss was fierce and hungry, everything that she had come to think of whenever her mind turned to him. There was so much passion and desire in him, but such tenderness too. He had held her close to him in that other world, lying on his back with her body half on his and his fingers playing in her damp hair. She had felt so tremendously at peace with him there and she had known the depth of his feelings for her. It transcended such a simple word as care. It even went beyond what she knew as love. And it was something that burned deep within her too.

Marcus’s hands skimmed down her bare thighs and she tingled wherever he touched, sparks racing over her skin and burrowing deep into her belly where they blazed into desire.

She loosed a moan and deepened the kiss, so their tongues softly danced and their breath mingled.

She wouldn’t say no to a real-world encore to last night.

He stiffened beneath her, hands grasping her upper arms, and pushed her backwards. She was going to ask what was wrong but the way he stared at the closed bedroom door held her tongue. She listened, straining to hear what he had, if anything at all.

Marcus lifted her off him and rose from the bed, his back to her. He stood there, stock still and never once taking his eyes off the door. Had he heard something? It was probably just Taylor and Einar.

The sense of danger drifted away at that thought and she swept her gaze up Marcus, lingering a moment on his backside and the material that loosely covered it before continuing to the dimples above his bottom and finally following the strong line of his back up to his shoulder blades.

Her gaze tracked the grey-blue swirls of the wings marked on his skin.

A curse.

Someone had wanted to seal his power and he wasn’t sure why.

Did it have something to do with her, so they could take her from him?

I hope you enjoyed this Saturday Snippet!

Why I will pursue an agent and a traditional publishing contract when the time is right

There’s been a lot of publishing doom and gloom over the past year, with countless websites telling us the end of traditional publishing and the big six is nigh, and the ebook boom will change the world. There have also been a few murmurs of the ebook bubble bursting and so forth, and a few people piping up with how once an author tastes the high life of self-published royalties, they’ll never go back to pursuing book contracts.

I, for one, am an author looking to have one foot in self-publishing and being indie, and the other firmly in a traditional contract with a big publisher.

I’m neither a naysayer nor a blind fool. I don’t think the ebook boom will cripple the publishing industry. They were caught on the back foot a little last year and hadn’t anticipated such a sharp rise to power by digital books or indie authors, but they are quickly catching on and will probably provide more competition this year. I don’t think ebooks will suddenly go pop and we’ll all go back to reading paperbacks. I also don’t believe that we’ll all go digital. My money is on half of readers turning to a mixture of digital and paperback books, and the other half remaining firmly away from technology and sticking with paper. If I see a book on offer in paperback format for cheaper than the ebook (not hard most of the time), I buy the paperback.

Now, many people think that authors who pursue traditional publishing deals are looking for validation. That’s not what I need from a book contract or an agent. I don’t need a publisher to make me feel that my books are worth reading or I’ve made it as a writer. The reviews I receive for my books and the support from my growing number of readers, and the fact that I sold over 155,000 books last year (note: Sold, not gave away for free. I also had over 50,000 free downloads too) is validation enough for me.

I have a plan as an author, and part of that plan includes finding a good agent and getting a great book contract because I want to reach a wider audience, people that I can’t reach at the moment through ebooks and expensive POD paperbacks alone. You know, the people who shop in bookstores or prefer mass-market paperbacks? In order to reach the widest audience possible, I need to have one foot in the indie world and one in the traditional world of publishing. I don’t care that I will probably make less money from the books I sign over to publishers. I care that I will have the power to reach more readers and touch more lives. I write books so I can reach readers and give them a few hours away from their daily lives. It’s the number of copies sold that excites me and keeps me writing, not the dollars and pounds flowing into my bank account.

I would never give up being an indie author though. I have paranormal romance series on the go at the moment, such as my popular Vampires Realm series that I write as F E Heaton or the extremely popular Her Angel series that I write as Felicity Heaton, that I will most probably keep as indie published series. I do have series that I will write soon that will be for the traditional publishing market. My reason for doing this is above, and the fact that I have always wanted to see my books published with someone big and that I believe they will be picked up. I’m not being conceited when I say that I have faith in my books and that my writing is good enough for a book contract with a major publisher. I’m sure all authors feel that to some degree or we wouldn’t pursue book deals at all.

But the time isn’t right for me yet. My four year plan that started last year is only entering phase two right now and it’s not until phase three and four that I intend to rope me an agent and then a publisher and wrangle them into submission. Of course, if a publisher or agent emailed me tomorrow and told me that they wanted to contract my books, I would seriously consider it. I don’t leap into things without looking at it from all angles first. Ask my husband. I took weeks to decide whether to contract my Her Angel series with a Spanish publisher before deciding that it would be a good move for my career. I just hope that this first translation deal leads to others as I’ve found I like the thought of big foreign publishers translating my indie books.

I’m digressing. I think the point of this was to let new writers and old see that you don’t have to join one camp or the other. If an author wants to get a traditional deal for her books, you don’t need to sneer at her and call her stupid. She’ll have reasons for what she’s doing and in the end it’s down to her. The same goes for an author who decides she only wants to be indie. Or someone who says they’ll only publish their books on Amazon Kindle. We all have reasons for doing what we do.

Mine is reaching readers, not making money… so I intend to make my mark in the indie publishing world and then rock the boat in the traditional publishing market.

If you’re a writer, what do you want for your books and what do you want from writing?
