Vampires Realm – Masquerade

I was supposed to have planned the next Vampires Realm story this weekend, as well as doing a lot of other writing related work, but took a little me time in the end and read some books instead (Terry Pratchett, not romance books) as I needed to unwind a bit. I’ll be planning the story this week instead, and also the next novella in the Vampires Realm series too.

The one I’ll be starting to write next week is Masquerade (although the title might change), which is going to be centred around the Creator’s Day ball and focuses on two Venia guards. The hero and heroine are usually at loggerheads with each other (apologies if that doesn’t translate across the pond/around the world — it means they’re basically fighting / arguing all the time) but everything changes after they don masks for the ball, working undercover to protect the important dignitaries of the seven pure bloodlines. Cue misunderstandings, one of them not knowing it was the other one they were with at the ball, and a lot of danger and action. Quite a lot to squeeze into a novella. Plus, we’ll be catching up with some of the vampires from my previous stories, and meeting a few from future novels.

The next one after this is Hunter’s Moon and this time it’s a werewolf/vampire romance novella. Won’t say too much about it but there’ll be plenty of conflict and a show of alpha maleness towards the end.

I’m writing Masquerade for it to come out in January. Short notice again but my crazy 11 stories in 2011 isn’t going to wait for anyone, especially me. The muse is up for a writing frenzy, but he’ll get lazy once he realises that the natural order of things is for an editing frenzy to following the writing part… and I have a stack of books sitting in the to be edited pile.

Vampire for Christmas – Cover!

I have been industrious this morning and have made the cover for my November seasonal release, Vampire For Christmas…

Pretty?

I wanted it to be warm but sexy. I think it sort of accomplishes that. He’s giving her booby a hefty squeeze though. Honk honk. She doesn’t seem to mind.

I haven’t written the blurb for it yet but I’ll get it done soon while the story is still fresh in my mind.

I have a slew of covers to make for next year. It’s good getting back into the act though.

What do you think?

Vampire for Christmas – vampire romance seasonal release

Well, before I could really get into posting about the story I was writing for Christmas, the story is all written in first draft and done. That’s one of the downsides to writing novellas and short stories. As soon as I’ve started writing them, I’ve finished, and I don’t post much about them on my blog because of it.

I started writing the first draft of Vampire for Christmas on Monday, and finished it on Thursday. It’s a vampire romance novella (25000 words) with a sexy vampire hero called Rafe and a sassy vampire hunter heroine, Shannon. They’re partners at a demon hunting agency and as much as Shannon likes to pretend she hates Rafe, she’s falling for him pretty hard. Hard enough that she doesn’t want this last mission to be… well… their last mission. Two years of working with Shannon is enough to have Rafe crazy about her, and he’s determined to show her that they belong together, and to make her overcome her denial about her feelings for him. It takes a slimy monster and some serious soul-searching, but it might just work out good in the end.

I’m pretty pleased with the result. The tension is good, the UST is there too, and the slimy demon provides room for amusement (what’s not funny about a heroic vampire rushing in to save the day only to slide harmlessly off his enemy and land in a pile of goo on his face?). I think readers will enjoy it, and while it has a serious side too (with the heroine overcoming her past horrific encounter with a vampire in order to accept her feelings for Rafe, a less horrific more sexy and evil-to-all-but-Shannon vampire), it’s a warm fuzzy light sort of romance, with a bit of heat thrown in. Perfect for keeping readers warm in winter!

Now all I’ve got to do is edit the beast. It’ll have to sit for a bit before I dive into doing the second draft but the release day for this one is already looming. I want to get it out in November. As soon as I have the cover and blurb, I’ll post it.

Oh, and it’s a stand alone, so will be released under my Felicity Heaton name. Yes, yes, it’s about time we had another F E Heaton release… say something in the Vampires Realm series. Well, that’s what I’m working on next 🙂

Her Dark Angel – Number 4 in Romance – Best Seller

Well, colour me happy. I’ve just checked Fictionwise and Her Dark Angel has leapt up to number 4 in romance, and is now placing as number 8 in the overall best seller chart! Squee!!!

Look! http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/c9/Romance/?si=0

Thank you to everyone who has purchased it so far. What a great start to the release this has been. Her Dark Angel, the first in my sexy new paranormal angel romance e-book series, made it to number 10 in Romance after the first week. I had expected it to drop, so seeing it shoot up to number 4, and therefore placing in the top 10 across the entire site, is thrilling. If you don’t have your copy yet, then let me introduce you the story… it’s guaranteed to make you hot and fuzzy inside.

Her Dark Angel
by Felicity Heaton

An angel without a mission, Apollyon lives trapped in Hell guarding the bottomless pit. Surrounded by endless darkness, he longs to fly free on Earth once more but his master hasn’t called him in centuries. When the call finally comes, it’s to serve a new master, a beautiful woman he has often watched over, a woman who has always captivated him.

Serenity is shocked when a gorgeous black-winged angel shows up in her city of Paris claiming that she called him when she was only casting a simple vengeance spell. He’s no other than the angel of death! When Apollyon offers to obey her and help her have revenge on her cheating ex-boyfriend, she can’t resist the temptation, but can she resist him? Can an angel as dark as Apollyon ever fall for a mortal woman like her?

Their charade as lovers quickly becomes reality when one dance leads to another and Apollyon proves that he’s as sinful as he looks. His sensual and hungry touch brings Serenity back to life, freeing her from the hurt of being betrayed and reigniting her passion, but she can’t ignore her growing fear. Lost in their moment together, Apollyon realises that there is a reason he heard her call—he’s in love with her.

But will Serenity see past the wings and believe that Apollyon returns her feelings and won’t hurt her? When her ex-boyfriend asks her to forgive him and be with him again, will she take the easy route or will she find the courage to fly away with her dark angel?

Dark, passionate and sensual, Her Dark Angel is a tale of intense desire and deepest forbidden love guaranteed to get your heart racing.

Her Dark Angel is the first story in a three part series. All of the stories cross-over by characters and world only, not plot, so you’re free to enjoy them in any order. Keep your eyes peeled for Her Fallen Angel (coming October 2010) and Her Warrior Angel (coming November 2010)

Stories finished and new stories started

I got distracted this weekend blogging about my 11 books in 2011 challenge, and forgot to post about my progress with writing.

Her Warrior Angel is finished in first draft now. I completed it on Wednesday, but it’s not quite perfect. I know I have a few issues with the final chapter to resolve during the second draft, but it’ll be easy to address them then rather than tinker with it now. Better to move on to other projects and let it sit for a bit so I can gain some perspective on the issues. It’s nothing major. Just a few things need ironing out and writing better, and I need to check for repetition.

Her Fallen Angel is in much better shape now after final tweaks. I wanted to make sure that the conflict came through and things weren’t overly easy for them. It’s ready for the final polish and proof now, and will hit the deadline for release on October 16th.

I’ve started writing a new story this morning. Vampire for Christmas is my seasonal offering for the year. I’m hoping to get it written in first draft this week and then edited and ready for release in November. That’s a short deadline but I only decided to do a seasonal piece just the other week, so I didn’t really get much notice myself. Sometimes I have to roll with the muse. He wants to write a paranormal Christmas story, so I’ll write one. I have the plot down for it, and just need to write the beast. It’ll probably be another novella, topping out around 30,000 words. It’s a vampire piece, obviously, but the heroine is human and a hunter no less. I like toying with vampire / vampire hunter relationships. I won’t give too much away about it though. It’ll spoil the festive surprise! I have a whopping 1500 words of it written as of this morning, but I’ll hopefully be up to around the 6000 word mark by the time I get home from work.

Eleven romance e-books for 2011

I was going to call this post “eleven paranormal romance e-books for 2011” but then remembered that some of them are actually dark fantasy romance / fantasy steampunk romance ebooks, not paranormal.

And now that’s out of the way with, on to the point of this post!

I was rather absent from releasing new stories over the past year. Some ridiculous idea about getting an agent and leaving the world of indie publishing had me caught up in slaving over researching agents and publishers, and endlessly fiddling with a perfectly good novel that probably didn’t need that much tweaking at all, and writing another 3 novels for the same purpose. Because of this, and the fact that it appears my readers have stuck with me throughout my absence, I am going to make it up to everyone by doing something a little bit crazy.

Like releasing eleven e-books in 2011… yes… 11 books. And I’m not just talking novellas and short stories here.

I am going to write and release 4 novels and 6 novellas. What’s that I hear you cry? That’s only 10? Well, yes, but the muse is yet to decide whether number 11 is going to be a novella or a novel, although he has just given me an idea for a shape-shifter novel (which may jump the long queue of 16 other novels that are waiting to be written)

At least I have until December to figure out which novel or novella will be written for spot number 11, which gives me plenty of time to plan, write, and edit it.

And what sort of stories are the other ten novels and novellas? Well, there’s a good mix. You’ve got some paranormal vampire romance novels (including one rather epic book), two Vampires Realm novellas, two Tri-Kingdom novellas (a fantasy steampunk romance series I started but I’m now re-writing some of them), an urban fantasy romance, a shapeshifter novella, and a werewolf romance novella. Plus, whatever number 11 turns out to be (it could be anything if the muse doesn’t go with this new story – I have Vampires Realm novels, Tri-Kingdom novels, science-fiction romances, vampire romances, werewolf romances… and urban fantasy romances).

I’ll keep track my progress with these novels and novellas, and this challenge here. I’ve already blogged about some of them – Love Immortal (out Feb 2011), Ascension (out May 2011), Forbidden Blood (out July 2011) and Heart of Darkness (out Oct 2011) – which are the four novels that make up part of the challenge.

I haven’t written a bean about the novellas yet, as I haven’t started them! I’ll dream up some suitable working titles and then start posting when I begin writing them. I’m due to start writing the first Vampires Realm novella this month, once I’ve written Vampire for Christmas, which is my seasonal release this year, and which I’m starting the first draft of on Monday. But that’s a different post…

update on the iBookstore

I’m excited to say that there has been a slight improvement with the iBookstore in that I can actually verify that my books are there. iBookstore is now available in the UK and you can get it on iPhones, and I asked a work colleague to check whether my books were there. They were, and In Heat and In Heat: Mating Call both have five star ratings, which was rather exciting to see!

It’s a shame that my only way of seeing iBookstore is via someone else’s iPhone if they happen to have the app installed. I still think Apple need to wake up and realise that without a physical website URL we can send readers to, we can’t effectively promote out e-books on the iBookstore. I think the problem stems from the fact that they’re primarily a computer / software program sort of company, and don’t really have a firm grasp of what it takes to sell books online—namely a good website where people can browse the books and decide to buy, and where authors can direct their readers who might be interested in buying their book for a certain platform.

I would like to see them open a website but I don’t think it will happen. I’m eager to see if my sales have picked up at all since they last sent data to Smashwords back in June. I hadn’t sold much then. I don’t think that the twenty-something e-books I had sold on iBookstore in two months of my books being available on there could compare at all with the several thousand I sold at Amazon in that same timeframe.

The reason I asked my work colleague whether he could get the iBookstore on his iPad in the UK (which he then informed me he could get it on his iPhone too) was because a fellow author emailed me, having read my previous blog rant about the iBookstore, asking if anything had changed since I posted it back in April. Nothing has really changed except that I’ve verified that my paranormal romance books are indeed there, but at least I can tell him that if he has an iPhone or iPad, or knows someone who does, that he can see if his books appear there too when he submits them.

Does being able to see the books on iBookstore in the UK tempt me to purchase an iPhone or iPad? Not really. I’m not actually tempted to buy an Amazon Kindle either, although I do use Amazon’s Kindle PC program and find it’s a good piece of software.

I don’t spend enough time reading to warrant owning an e-reader of any sort. While I have grand designs when it comes to taking breaks and having some reading time, I often end up engaged in something else entirely—namely writing, developing websites, or drawing. (or reading manga, but that’s a beast of an addiction)

When characters change the plot… Her Warrior Angel

Last week was a mixed week for writing. I had hoped to get the update on Her Warrior Angel, the final story in my Her Angel paranormal angel romance e-book series, posted this weekend but Saturday was extremely busy and then I just had to chill out on Sunday as I was heading for meltdown mode. I’m still partially stuck in promo mode and getting everything set up on my new social networking empire. It’s been a bit manic and very distracting, putting me off my writing.

I did manage to get the bulk of Her Warrior Angel written last week, although Einar, the hero, decided that he would change the plot. Cue a bit of a rethink about how to restructure the rest of the plot so it still worked, and then I was back to writing again. Normally I don’t get this problem with my heroes. More often than not, my problem character is a secondary character who doesn’t want to play the role the plot and my muse have assigned to him (er, that’s you Venturi, I hope you’re listening!). It was a nice change to have a hero be the trouble maker this time, and at least he was only changing the plot in a way that I think has actually made it better. I’ll let him off with this one for that reason, and the fact that I hadn’t really plotted and outlined this story 100% (as I usually do) so there was room for manoeuvre.

I have just this morning reached 30,931 words with Her Warrior Angel and have just typed “Chapter 10”, which is the final chapter in this story. It’s going to be a bit longer than the first two stories by the looks of things, but it’s around the same length, so that’s good. I do hate it when I plan out a short series of novellas or short stories and they all wind up vastly different lengths. I’ll get this story wrapped up in first draft today and then it’s straight on to tweaks to Her Fallen Angel, the second story in my Her Angel paranormal angel romance e-book series.

And once that’s done, I’m writing another new story for Christmas!
