EXCERPT

Taig closed his eyes and released a long low groan of unexpected pleasure as Lealandra’s warm mouth fused with his. Her tongue slid between his lips, a delicious and familiar hot velvet caress that swept across his teeth and drew another hungry moan from him. Without considering the consequences and forgetting his anger, he twisted her long black hair around his fingers and tethered her to him so this breathtaking fantasy wouldn’t end before he wanted, and he wanted it to go on forever.

He tilted his head and pressed harder against her mouth, his tongue brushing hers, delving in deep to taste her. A shiver of desire and need shot through him, and his breathing turned rough as he reacquainted himself with her sweetness and warmth. He hadn’t imagined things turning out this way when she had walked into the bar tonight, but he wasn’t about to push her away now that she was kissing him again, rekindling passion whose embers had burned deep in his heart all the time they had been apart. She moved against him, her lips soft and grazing his, slowing the kiss until he wanted to groan and pull her against him, wanted to thrust his tongue back into her mouth and show her just how ravenous she made him. It coiled tight in his gut, pushing for control, urging him to act on his desire.

All too soon, her lips left his but she remained close. With a soft puff of air into his mouth, she spoke.

“Are they gone?” Her quiet voice trembled along with her body, telling him that the kiss hadn’t only affected him. His heart pounded for more and his blood rushed through his ears, dampening his awareness of their surroundings.

Taig glanced around the dim emptying bar. The two men were gone. He stared into her eyes, refreshing his memory of every fleck of silver against stormy grey. It had been too long since he had seen her, and felt even longer since he had kissed her. A tortuous length of time and an absence he couldn’t easily forgive, even when her kiss made him forget it.

“Not yet,” he whispered the lie against her lips, a split-second before his mouth claimed hers, dominant now that he was ready for the kiss. Desire became a raging inferno within him, burning away the anger that blazed back into life whenever he had a moment to think. This kiss was the only thing that mattered right now.

This time, Lealandra loosed a deep breathy moan. The sound sent his blood rushing ahead of his thoughts. He hardened instantly against his tight black jeans and wrapped his fingers around the nape of her neck, pressing them in and dragging her closer still. The heat of her kiss reawakened lost passion and a need for her that could never die. Six years of separation disappeared in an instant, erased by the fact that she had finally walked back into his life. He wasn’t going to let her go this time. Even if this kiss was only a decoy, it still meant something to them both. He knew it did.

Her fingertips grazed his neck and pushed into the shorter black hair at the back of his head. He groaned internally at the feel of her nails against his scalp, declaring her growing hunger, and furrowed his brow as he brought his hand forward to claim her jaw, holding her in place. He burned at the feel of her soft satin skin beneath his fingers. Her touch was still electric, sending waves of hot sparks dancing along every nerve in his body, bringing his cold flesh to life. Tilting her head back, he thrust his tongue into her mouth and slid his free hand around her waist at the same time, pulling her so close to him that her breasts pushed against his chest with each gasping breath she drew. He eased his hand lower and caressed the patch of bare warm skin between the bottom of her short black strapless corset top and the waist of her long black skirt. Lealandra tensed. Too fast.

Taig braced for impact.

The flat of her hand slammed against his chest, forcing him backwards in the curved padded seat of the booth and tearing her from his grasp. Her gelid gaze stopped him dead.

“They’re gone, aren’t they?” Lealandra’s tone was pure venom that matched the ice in her pale grey eyes.

Taig held his hands up, surrendering with a seductive smile that confessed every sin he had been considering. Lealandra wasn’t the kind of witch you lied to. With such strong power flowing in her veins, it was easy for her to read everyone. Everyone but him. His blood saw to that. Her ability to see through him didn’t come from magic. It came from the divine six months they had spent locked tight in each other’s embrace. Six heavenly months he would never forget followed by six hollow years he wished he couldn’t remember.

Lealandra looked around the bar, flicking her straight dark hair over her bare slender shoulders. His black gaze raked over her in the same hungry way it had done when she had first appeared in front of him tonight. She had grown a little thinner in their time apart. Her partner hadn’t been taking care of her. Taig curled his fingers into fists at the thought of another man touching what was his. Anger blazed in his chest, ignited by the idea that the man she had chosen over him hadn’t been looking after her needs. Had the idiot failed to see what she truly craved?

The magic that inhabited her body drained her and made her hungry. She needed to feed often and he wasn’t talking about food. Magic as old and potent as hers demanded the highest price and had the basest needs. If it didn’t get what it wanted, it was hard for Lealandra to retain control. It only proved the point he had tried to hammer home to her when she had been on the verge of leaving him all those years ago and disproved hers.

Taig didn’t give a fuck about the rules of her kind. A witch was no match for a witch, especially not one who needed blood to sustain her.

Demon blood.

The thought that Lealandra had been struggling with her power these six long years stoked his anger into blind fury. Every muscle itched with the desire to find her pathetic excuse for a man and teach him a lesson he would never forget for making her suffer. The kind of lesson that would satisfy Taig’s own deep dark cravings.

“I can’t believe you’d take a cheap shot like that,” Lealandra muttered in his direction, her eyes meeting his. “No. Wait. Actually… I can.”

With his best sexy smirk, Taig leaned back into the grotty dark brown leather seat and stretched his arms out along the top. He shrugged and held her gaze.

“You kissed me first. I just returned the favour.”

Her tongue swept over her lips, as though she wanted to kiss him again and was contenting herself with the lingering taste of him. If she wanted him to kiss her, he would. He would kiss her so hard that she would forget that idiot she had left him for and her own name in the process. She would forget everything but the feel of him inside her where he belonged. He would ruin her to everyone but him.

“That’s not the kind of favour I need from you.” Lealandra casually rested her elbow on the back of the leather seat and propped her chin up with her hand. Her head tilted to one side, her dusky kiss-swollen lips curving into a smile. His heart thundered, beating hard with the rush of desire that flooded him.

That smile had made him want her the moment he had laid eyes on her all those years ago. He still wanted her.

He tamped down his desire and got a grip. Her kissing him hadn’t changed a damn thing. Whatever they’d had, it didn’t exist anymore. She had trampled it on her way out of the door and it was going to take a lot more than a kiss to get her into his good book again.

“A favour? Tell me, why should I do you any favours? Last I checked, you were shacked up with another bloke. Why don’t you ask Loverboy to help you out? I’m sure he could do something… unspectacular.” Taig picked up his shot of whisky from the table and necked it. The liquid burned his throat as it slid down, heating him through. Sometimes it was nice to feel something other than cold. Alcohol and hunting were the only things that did that these days. His gaze ran over Lealandra. She used to make him burn hotter than Hell on a summer’s day. She still did, but he wasn’t about to let her see that. “I guess that’s why you’re here. Loverboy just doesn’t cut it when it comes to handling demons. That pair of weaklings would have him inside out and back to front before he could lift a finger to cast whatever impotent half-assed spell he could muster.”

Taig held her gaze, cool and steady, watching the hurt surfacing in her eyes and feeling like a bastard for it, but on some twisted level, it satisfied him.

He narrowed his eyes and casually placed the glass down. “Well, you’re shit out of luck, Lea. I’m not interested.”

Her only reaction was to look away from him. She flicked the small silver bells on the ties of her long skirt and her shoulders lifted in a sigh. That was unsatisfactory. He had expected a better response than that. He had wanted her to argue with him about it. Perhaps even fight him. A good fight with her might go some way towards releasing the anger that was burning like acid in his veins, eating away at him and filling his head and heart with acrid memories.

Memories that drove him to kill.

He quirked a dark eyebrow and waited for her to say something. It wasn’t like her. She looked up at him through her eyelashes.

A hint of fear surfaced in her beautiful eyes and rippled across her pale skin in a wave that only he could detect. He sat up, all sense of casual lost now that he had realised that she was frightened and it wasn’t of him. His anger faded. Something was very wrong. Lealandra didn’t do frightened. No witch as powerful as her did, at least not when they had their Counter-Balance, their other half, the one who could temper their magic and help them maintain control of it.

“I’ll pay you… whatever you want… just name your price.” She coughed to clear her throat, as though such a pathetic attempt to cover her turbulent feelings would fool him.

It was there in her body and her power, and he knew her well enough that he could easily read both. She was scared, and he was an idiot for not noticing it the second she had approached him, and the moment those thugs had walked into the joint. They had been out of place and suspicious, and he had sensed their demon blood, and then Lealandra had kissed him and he had lost track of them and her feelings. She had tasted purely of hunger and desire. All sweet with arousal. It had been enough to throw him off her underlying fear.

“You know my price.” Taig’s eyes narrowed on hers, intent and showing her that he was being serious for once. His voice dropped to a low whisper. “I want you, Lea.”

She swallowed and blinked. Once. Twice. “No deal.”

When she moved to stand, Taig grabbed her wrist, locking his fingers tightly around it. She looked down at his hand and then into his eyes. Her startled look added to her natural beauty, her eyes round and her rosy lips parted. A blush stained her pale cheeks, deep enough that he noticed it even in the low light of the bar. He wanted her more now than ever and he wasn’t about to let her walk out on him again.

“You knew what I’d ask for so why come to me with your problems if you were going to refuse?”

Lealandra pried his fingers off her and frowned. “You saw those men. I need a demon hunter. You’re the best I know.”

Demon hunter. The job title neglected to mention the fact that his father had been one of the most powerful demons to walk the Earth. He stared into Lealandra’s stormy eyes and saw the same calm acceptance that they always showed him. Had his mother looked at his father that way? She had dared to be with him after all. That union had spawned himself—half demon hidden behind the mask of man.

Taig tapped his fingers on the dark table, torn between rejecting her request unless she agreed to his terms and kissing her again. His eyebrows knitted tight together. This wasn’t easy. What they had shared six years ago wasn’t the kind of everyday passion that most people found at the start of a relationship. It had gone beyond that. The dark and hungry craving had consumed them both, had pushed them to the edge and had almost tipped them over it a few times. It had been unbridled passion—the sort that was rare in this world—and it still flooded him whenever he looked at her, whenever her beautiful eyes met his and dared him to make a move. He could deny it all he wanted, pretend that he no longer felt a thing for her, but she still tied him in knots and had him on his knees with only a smile. She licked her lips again, a nervous sweep of her tongue that reminded him that something was wrong.

What could be so bad that she wasn’t asking her precious coven for help and was instead looking him up after six long years?

Was it just the demons that had her scared or was there more to this than she was telling him? Witches and demons got on like a house on fire but usually they kept well clear of each other, sticking to their own world. It was unusual for a demon to go after a witch, but he couldn’t deny that the two kids earlier had been looking for Lealandra.

And now she was asking him for help.

What reason could demons have for going after her?

Taig looked deep into her eyes, focusing on them as he tried to get a hold on her feelings. There was anger in her now, aimed at him, but the fear was still there too. It echoed in the unsteady beat of her heart and danced in the depths of her eyes. She was in trouble, big enough that she had sought him out even when she knew that he would be pissed off at her and that he would demand a high price for services rendered. Either she was desperate or she truly believed that he was her best choice.

Or maybe she just wanted to see him again and this was the perfect excuse for her to waltz back into his life.

Still, his ineffable charm and attractiveness aside, parts of it didn’t make sense. Lealandra was powerful enough to take care of a couple of weak lower demons and her bastard Counter-Balance and dear coven should have been able to protect her if she couldn’t fight them for some reason. Taig had never met them, but the coven was probably strong enough to take on a demon of his strength. Two weaklings would be nothing to them. Like swatting flies.

And why was she here anyway? Alone too. Her Counter-Balance would have a tantrum of galactic proportions if he knew that Lealandra had come to her ex-lover for help.

In fact, none of it made sense.

Taig’s head ached from trying to figure it out. It was just like her to send his mind in ten directions at once. There was only one way to find out what the hell had Lealandra walking back into his life. He never had been backwards about being forwards, after all. It was one of the qualities that Lealandra had liked about him.

“Why do you need me?” Taig sensed the deep spike in her feelings, the rise in her desire that struck him hard and sent a jolt to his groin, reigniting his own hunger.

Her eyes widened and her cheeks coloured.

He hadn’t considered the possibility of a second meaning to his words but now he was. His suspicions had been right. He wasn’t the only one the kiss had affected. He wasn’t the only one who felt this need burning deep within.

His eyes narrowed on hers in both a challenge and a command. He was damned if he was going to let her get away without answering, and damned if he was going to let her walk out on him again.

“Tell me.”

Daily Dozen – Vampire for Christmas – vampire romance book

Today’s Daily Dozen is a seasonal one since it’s almost December. It’s 12 sentences from my touching, passionate and funny festive offering, Vampire For Christmas.

To set the scene, Rafe, a vampire doing time with the agency for bad behaviour, has just picked up Shannon at her house. Shannon is a demon hunter and has been paired with Rafe for the past couple of years, and soon their time together will come to an end. Rafe sees this is a bad thing as he’s fallen for his little vampire hunter. Shannon couldn’t be happier because she wants nothing more than to escape Rafe and her growing feelings for him.

Rafe frowned at her but it didn’t stick. It melted into a smile that threatened to steal her breath and she averted her gaze again. What was she doing? Her heart skittered about in her throat and she knew he would be listening to it, and he would know that he was affecting her. She could do this.

It was just one more mission.

And then she would be able to escape these feelings.

She was not going to fall for him.

He was a vampire. She was a hunter.

Her gaze snuck back to him, studying his noble profile, and her heart thudded hard against her chest.

There was no love more forbidden than this.

Did you enjoy this Daily Dozen?

Vampire for Christmas is available for just $0.99 in ebook from Amazon Kindle Stores, Barnes and Noble Nook, Apple iBookstore, Sony Reader Store, Kobo Books and other retailers. Find out more about it below:

Vampire for Christmas
Felicity Heaton
It was one last mission. Shannon, a demon hunter with the agency, is looking forward to leaving behind the small town and the vampire she’s been stuck with for the past two years. Things are getting complicated fast and she wants out. A fresh start, free of her vampire partner, awaits her if she can survive their final mission and the lonely Christmas holidays.

It was one last mission. Rafe, a vampire doing time with the agency, watches it approach with dread weighing heavily in his stomach. Two years of working with Shannon has been difficult, especially since he started falling for her, but he doesn’t want their partnership to end. He has barely a few days to make her face her feelings and stop her from leaving, and he intends to do just that.

When a slimy demon threatens the season of peace and goodwill, it’s the chance Rafe has been waiting for and the moment Shannon secretly fears. Rafe’s determination to prise open her heart and her own resolve to keep it closed clash as violently as they do with the demon, and threatens to end as messily.

Can Rafe make Shannon see that his love for her is real and that she feels something for him too? Can Shannon face her fears and her past, and stop herself from running away from both? Will a wish on a star bring her what her heart truly desires—a vampire for Christmas?

Daily Dozen – Heart of Darkness – vampire romance book

Your Sunday Daily Dozen this week comes from Heart of Darkness, my latest release and a stand alone vampire romance book.

Aleksandr has just returned from a hunt, injured and bleeding, and in need of urgent medical attention. Elise has chosen to be the one to tend to him, to repay him for the time that he took care of her wound, and is about to bravely offer her blood to him so she can send him into a deep healing sleep and therefore tend to his wounds more easily. Since she has never allowed another vampire to bite her before, she isn’t sure she’ll be able to contain the lust it will undoubtedly stir in her and do her job properly, and she isn’t prepared for how it feels when Aleksandr bites her.

Aleksandr brought her right wrist to his lips, shut his eyes and licked her skin. Another shiver chased through her and her temperature rose, her heart beating quicker with anticipation. His lips closed over her wrist. She gasped when he eased his fangs deep into her and then removed them.

Eyes wide, Elise stared at him, her lips parted and breathing fast. Heat spread up her arm, suffusing every inch of her body in a sharp tingling pleasure that made her want to moan. She reminded herself to focus and keep her mind on the thought of sleep, and to send that message to him through her blood and block all others. It was difficult, nigh on impossible, when he started to drink from her, a soft suckling that sent wave after wave of warmth rippling through her. Warmth that all settled in her abdomen, heating her through and making her ache for Aleksandr.

She wanted more.

She wanted to feel his fangs in her.

She hadn’t wanted his fleeting bite and this soft reverential drinking. She had wanted him to sink his teeth deep into her body and to drink hard, to bring her close to the edge as she knew only he could, to bring her into his arms and into his body, until they were one.

Enjoyed today’s Daily Dozen? Read on for more information about Heart of Darkness.

Book Review – The Darkest Kiss by Gena Showalter (Lords of the Underworld #2)

I went away for a few days to distant wilds of Scotland and managed to read three books while I was there relaxing. All three were books in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. I had already read the first book, The Darkest Night, so I read books 2, 3 and 4. I’m going to spread the reviews out over the next few weeks, and hopefully I’ll write some reviews for the two Lara Adrian books I read quite recently too. Today, I’m reviewing book two in the Lords of the Underworld series, The Darkest Kiss.

So here’s my candid review of this paranormal romance book by Gena Showalter.

The Darkest Kiss
Gena Showalter
She has tempted many men…but never found her equal. Until now.

REVIEW
I enjoyed this addition to Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. The writing annoyed me at first, making me feel as though I was trapped in the mind of a child rather than an adult. I understand that Anya is supposed to be hip and whatever but I could have lived without the irritating internal monologue in the narrative. Thankfully, that aspect of the book soon faded, along with the repetition of how ‘foolish’ the hero and heroine and everything else was.

Lucien really saved this book for me. He’s luscious, dangerous, and has issues that would make the hardest heart purr for him. I did feel he could have been just a little bit darker though, but then I do love my men to have a side that is as black as midnight. Anya took a while to grow on me. Once we moved past the initial few chapters where her POV irritated me, she vastly improved. By the end of the book I almost liked her.

I liked their cat and mouse game, with Lucien’s resistance in his attempts to kill Anya and Anya’s attempts to kill him first, but never really felt the threat that they really would kill each other. It was always too easy for the other to escape at the last second, and became a little predictable.

The ending seemed a touch too easy for my tastes too. We’re supposed to believe that they could go to see a friend of Anya’s and head into the arctic in search of an artefact that could be anywhere on that vast landmass but happens to be just a day away and in the first spot they looked for it. I found that very difficult to swallow. A little more research turning up a location or a hint at a location would have made it more believable for me. The arctic is a huge area. Finding what you’re looking for in one attempt at one location is a miracle. I also didn’t feel the emotional pangs I should have at the end. The black moment lacked intensity when it really should have gripped me and torn at my heart. It just felt flat and quite emotionless. I like a good cry in a heart-wrenching moment. The writing didn’t move me at all.

I would still recommend this book though, and I know my review has focused on the bad rather than the good, so I’ll end it by saying that it’s worth reading for the luscious Lucien and the glimpses of the other heroes as they set up their own stories. Anya will grow on you if you don’t like her at first, and the plot is great until the last few chapters. There’s a beautiful sense of danger about the book, although I would’ve liked it a little darker. I guess I have to remember that I’m reading a Harly romance after all. Pick this book up if you like sexy immortal warrior heroes with serious complexes and a little danger to add spice to a relationship.

Daily Dozen – Her Guardian Angel – angel romance book

It’s the weekend… and time for today’s Daily Dozen. I’ve been doing this for a week now and I have to admit that I’m having fun. Today I’ve selected my sentences from my angel romance novel, Her Guardian Angel, the fourth book in my best selling Her Angel romance series.

Marcus is a guardian angel and has been watching over Amelia for her whole life. He’s recently been sent to the mortal realm to guard her more closely, and it has been torture to him. He isn’t interested in mortals, wants nothing to do with them, but from the first moment he and Amelia touch, he finds himself falling for her. Today’s scene takes place the day after that first touch, and Marcus is having a drink with her at a cafe, trying to learn more about her in an effort to understand why he must guard her and what he must protect her from.

Amelia reached across the table and took hold of Marcus’s left hand, her touch jolting him. His gaze leapt down to her fingers. Her thumb softly caressed his knuckles and her fingertips brushed his palm, bringing everything he had felt last night back to a rolling boil inside him. His pulse raced and his breathing quickened.

Desire?

Couldn’t be.

But even as he stared at their joined hands he couldn’t form a denial.

He inhaled sharply, trying to catch his breath and instead catching her sweet fragrance on the dusty warm air. Blood pounded in his temples and he could only watch the gentle sweep of her thumb across his fingers in abject fascination.

Images of her flashed across his wide eyes, dressed in her satin slip or in the tight summer dress she wore now, twirling and spinning towards him until her hands pressed against his chest and she was smiling right up into his eyes, her lips parting in invitation.

Did you enjoy this Daily Dozen?

If you want to know more about Her Guardian Angel, read on…

EXCERPT – CHAPTER SIX

The night was quiet and overcast, warmer than the past few days but the wind had picked up. It blew against Elise, tousling the fine strands of her dark hair in her ponytail and causing her to squint. She jammed her hands into the pockets of her waist-length uniform jacket and glared at the cobbled road ahead. They had been walking the streets for almost an hour, touring the areas where hunters usually appeared.

Aleksandr’s plan was flawless. Capture a vampire hunter and get information on the rest. The trouble was, so far they hadn’t found one. There wasn’t even a sign of activity tonight.

Elise wished there was. It would take her mind off her latest irritation.

Aleksandr had chosen female guards.

Walking into his private reception room on the first floor to discover five women from the guard there hadn’t shocked or angered her in the least. What had annoyed her was the sight of him reclining on the couch, eyeing them as though he was planning to sleep his way through them.

That and the fact he had chosen the prettiest women.

Well, he could sleep with them for all she cared but he wasn’t getting into her bed and she wasn’t going anywhere near his.

Elise shifted her focus to her surroundings, taking in the narrow alleyways between the old painted buildings. The niggling feeling in the pit of her stomach didn’t go away. Whenever she looked at the two blonde female guards with them, she wanted to grind her teeth and growl.

Aleksandr looked across at her and Elise schooled her features, hiding the jealousy that was riding her and not giving her a moment’s rest. She was a danger to Aleksandr when she was so preoccupied and she knew better than to lose her focus when out on the hunt.

It was shameful of her to behave such a way.

That thought alone sharpened her focus and pushed out any jealous thoughts. She was a guard and one of the best, and she wasn’t going to ruin her reputation because of something as petty as envy.

“Remain close.” Aleksandr fell into step beside her, as near as he had been during their tour of Prague.

Elise ignored him and the dark anger that bubbled within her. He had been condescending all evening.

Remain close. It was the tenth time he’d said that and whenever she heard it, she wanted to remind him that she was a soldier and could handle a vampire hunter.

“If there is an attack, stay near to me and I will protect you.” The Russian clip to those words annoyed her tonight, adding to her frustration and her desire to tell him where to go.

She bit her tongue and moved on ahead of him, striding to lead the pack and give herself some space.

She hadn’t needed a man to protect her since joining the guard at seventeen, over two hundred years ago, and she certainly wasn’t about to start needing one now. She could take care of herself.

Aleksandr came up beside her. He evidently couldn’t read subliminal messages and she couldn’t tell him outright to leave her alone. She had been wrong to speak to him in such a disrespectful way the other night. She humoured him, allowing him to feel as though he was protecting her only because he was their prince.

Elise reminded herself that he wasn’t a prince. It didn’t stick. He might have renounced his title and broken ties with his family to avoid tarnishing their peaceful name, but the blood that flowed in his veins was still Nemov. He could forsake his family to protect them, but he couldn’t surrender his name so easily, and he couldn’t change the hearts and minds of every vampire in Europe. They all thought of him as royalty.

And all would protect him given the chance.

Elise focused on that, clinging to the thought of doing her duty and protecting him, rather than his closeness and the way he spoke to her so intimately. Her life was nothing compared with his. She would gladly give it in order to ensure his survival during an attack. It would be an honourable death.

She walked on ahead, towards an intersection, scanning the area. It was still quiet.

“Wait.” Aleksandr caught her upper arm, drawing her back and close to him. “We are not alone.”
Elise focused harder but couldn’t sense anything. Was Aleksandr able to sense farther afield than her? He was four times her age and from a stronger bloodline, and had spent half of his years hunting. His senses would be more attuned than hers were.

He signalled to the two female guards. They moved closer, forming a tight group with her and Aleksandr.

Elise’s heartbeat quickened. She kept scouring the area but nothing came back. Finally, two human signatures registered on her senses and her instincts whispered of danger.

Hunters.

A very Russian sounding curse rolled off Aleksandr’s tongue and his grip on her arm increased. He pulled her closer to him and she yanked her arm free. It didn’t matter whether two hunters were coming their way and she was a little afraid, she wasn’t going to let him coddle her. She had fought vampire hunters before, although she had never killed one. Perhaps tonight she would change that and claim the life of one of the hunters coming towards her. Or both.

She moved to one side, forming a square with the others, and placed her hand over the dagger sheathed at her waist, waiting for the hunters to appear in view.

Aleksandr had said that their numbers were decreasing, but the threat they posed was still very real and recounted daily in society’s newspapers. While the humans were weaker, slower and died more easily, they were skilled and had several advantages. As vampire society’s desire to retain their humanity increased, their ability to fight and defend themselves declined. Many young vampires fell at the hands of hunters. Most of them had never reached maturity, had never killed, or hadn’t completed any sort of training. Hunters targeted those who were weak and vulnerable. They were ruthless and were adapting. Several religions and institutions trained specially selected humans for hunting vampires. They used entire lines of certain families—those which showed the best results and had the best genes in terms of reaction speed, strength and intelligence.

But even those humans needed an advantage over her kind.

Weapons.

Without them, all hunters would easily fall in a fight against a vampire.

Modern weaponry had caused an increase in the number of vampires killed by hunters, and each year the humans found ways to improve their arsenal.

She didn’t fear the hunters. She feared the stakes, the rapid-fire crossbows, and the silver bullets.

Aleksandr removed his coat and casually tossed it into the dark doorway of the residential building to their right. The metal on his vambraces reflected the low overhead streetlights as he drew his curved dagger and shifted into a fighting stance.

He looked as though he feared nothing.

Elise drew strength from the sight of him so calm and strong, and assumed a fighting stance too, bracing her feet shoulder-width apart. She took a deep breath, sensing the hunters moving closer and quicker now.

Her group had the advantage in one respect. The hunters wouldn’t be able to sense them.

The vampire hunters appeared in view, heading towards them along the road across the intersection. She drew her dagger and took another deep breath.

Before she could release it, Aleksandr was running at the two men. She struggled to react fast enough to keep up with him. The other two female guards were even slower, splintering their group.

Aleksandr reached the two men before her and dodged the crossbow bolt that flew at him. Elise sidestepped it too and sprinted, using her speed to come around behind the man with the bow. The other man blocked her short blade with his sword before she could penetrate the back of the man’s neck, and she growled at him, exposing her fangs. The sight of Aleksandr going to fight the two hunters alone had brought them out and the red had bled into her eyes quicker than usual.

The hunter with the bow drew a short sword and turned on her. Elise blocked his attacks and searched for an opening. The man was young, no older than mid-thirty, around Aleksandr’s age in terms of appearance, but he was strong and skilled with a blade. How many vampires had this man killed? He would kill no more. Tonight he would find death by her blade.

Aleksandr dragged her to one side when the man struck at her, his short sword a silver streak in the low-lit street. She gasped when she found herself face to face with the other hunter, a man in his early forties. Her blade was before her in an instant, blocking his sword, and she pushed him backwards.

The other two guards reached them and the fight became a mess. Elise did her best to keep to one hunter but the men kept switching on her, not giving her a chance to figure out their abilities or moves. They were clever.

Her breath left her when one of the men kicked her in the stomach and she fell backwards into the wall, grasping it for support and dropping her knife in the process. The younger man attacked again and she dodged his short sword, searching for a chance to get her knife. He didn’t give her one. She ducked and his blade scraped along the wall above her head, showering her with sparks.

Elise dived forwards and rolled onto her feet. The two female guards attacked the young hunter.

She went to assist them but stopped when she saw Aleksandr fighting. She had never seen anything like it. He was vicious, violent, but methodical and efficient in his actions, barely dodging the sword of the man he fought, stepping no further than necessary and gaining ground with each swipe the man made. There was no emotion in his eyes as he stepped around the man, came up behind him, and braced his arm across the man’s chest. The hunter struggled but it was useless.

Aleksandr’s blade moved silently over the man’s throat and blood spilled from the fine line, cascading over Aleksandr’s arm and hand.

As though it wasn’t enough to kill him, Aleksandr turned the blade and stabbed the man through his heart. He withdrew the dagger without any sign of feeling and dropped the body.

She sensed nothing from Aleksandr. No fear or excitement. Nothing. He had dispatched the hunter in a way that avoided awakening their inner darkness and risking losing some of his humanity.

Elise struggled to contain her emotions, even when she knew that it was dangerous for her to feel anything during the hunt. She trembled with fear and couldn’t tamp down her underlying excitement and hunger. She wished she were as strong as Aleksandr and in such perfect control.

Her eyes widened when Aleksandr grabbed the hunter’s body by his throat, lifted him, and turned him to face him. He sneered at the man, revealing long sharp canines, and thrust his blade into the man’s chest again. She balked when he dragged it down, gutting the hunter, and then dropped the dagger to the floor. It clattered on the cobbles, sending a shiver tripping over her skin, and she tried to look away but she couldn’t.

Not when she was looking straight into Aleksandr’s eyes.

They were black.

She swallowed. It was her imagination or the low light that made them look that way. His eyes weren’t black. It wasn’t the darkness within him showing through. He had killed the man without feeling. She had seen it herself. It had been a perfect kill. His soul wasn’t corrupted. It couldn’t be.

He snarled and sank his fangs into the man’s throat, his eyes still fixed on hers as he drank deep of the man’s blood.

In that moment, he was everything humanity had described them as in literature and in legend. He was a beast, something without feeling, only an instinct for blood and death driving him. He was dangerous and he frightened her.

He had been a kind man once, one destined to lead their people and one who had upheld the royal family’s desire to maintain peace and avoid bloodshed.

Aleksandr dropped the body and wiped the back of his hand over his lips, smearing the dark blood across his cheek.

He was no longer the prince her people adored. She could see that now. He was a brutal killer, fiercer than any other vampire, and she both feared him and feared for him.

She was afraid he would tread too close to the darkness within his heart and be lost to it.

Something moved out of the corner of her eye. The remaining hunter had broken free. Her heart galloped and she ran towards Aleksandr when the man raised his crossbow, aiming it at him.

It didn’t matter that Aleksandr was dangerous. She had to protect him.

She threw herself at him, shielding his broad body with her slender one, and screamed when the bolt pierced her left shoulder blade.

Aleksandr caught her around the waist and roared close to her ear.

Elise shuddered, her fingers twitching as the poison entered her system. She groaned and screwed her face up as flames burned her shoulder and a blazing inferno ignited her blood. She was too hot. She pushed Aleksandr back, needing air and to escape his strong grip.

There was a snarl and then he was gone.

The world wavered in her vision but not enough that she didn’t see the horrible sight when she turned to look for Aleksandr. He was attacking the hunter who had shot her, relentless and merciless, tearing into the man with his claws. She had to stop him. He needed information and was ruining any chance of getting it by killing the man.

Elise stumbled forwards, sickening heat chasing over her skin and making her tremble. Her knees threatened to give out but she tripped on, reaching for Aleksandr.

He didn’t stop. Her stomach roiled, bile rising. She pressed her hand to her abdomen and swallowed, wincing when her throat burned. The poison. She had to fight it but she didn’t know how. She shook, tears spilling down her cheeks and her breath hitching in her throat. She didn’t want to die.

Aleksandr tore a long gash in the hunter’s side, growling the whole time.

Why was he doing this? Why had he changed? He was brutal, terrifying in his lust for violence, a prince of darkness incarnate.

“Stop,” Elise whispered, fighting the overwhelming urge to surrender to sleep.

The two other guards came over to her but she pushed them away, forced them to part and let her through to Aleksandr. If his reason for turning so vicious was the attack on her then she had to stop him. She couldn’t let him do this, not because of her. She had chosen to take the bolt but she hadn’t realised this would be the consequence for her actions. Aleksandr was too violent, taking too much pleasure from the kill. It was too dangerous for him to do such a thing.

He ripped the man’s chest open, peeling his ribs back and snarling, and she shook her head. He had to stop or whatever darkness she had seen in his eyes would consume him forever.

She didn’t want that to happen because of her.

“Aleksandr.” She took another laboured step towards him, racked by chills and weakening with each passing second. She couldn’t hold out much longer.

He buried his hands deep in the man’s chest.

Her fingers hovered just short of Aleksandr’s back, fear of disturbing him crawling in her gut along with the poison. Elise took a breath and placed her trembling hand on his shoulder. He turned on her and snarled.

Elise looked into his eyes. He wavered in front of her, darkness blurring the edges of her vision, and she blinked to keep the lure of sleep away. She shook her head in sorrow when he raised his bloodied hands. He licked his fingers, his eyes never leaving hers, black pools of midnight. She feared the darkness in them and the way he had fought. She wouldn’t believe what she had seen. Aleksandr couldn’t be losing himself to the black abyss that lived inside them all.

He stared at her with predator’s eyes as he licked the blood off his fingers and she felt as though it was her blood not the hunter’s that he wanted to taste.

“Aleksandr.”

His expression shifted, a hint of recognition entering his dark eyes. She swallowed again and tried to find the strength to ask him to stop but it failed her and she collapsed as heat blazed through her blood.

When she managed to open her eyes again, Aleksandr was cradling her. His grey eyes shone with so much concern that she almost believed that he felt something for her. She tried to raise her hand but couldn’t move. She shivered, freezing now when only a moment ago she had been on fire.

“There you are,” she murmured and relief over seeing him normal again carried away the last of her strength. She had no reason to fight the poison now. Aleksandr was safe.

The image of him slipped away, drifting into the distance

She hoped his eyes hadn’t been black.

Her prince shouldn’t have to sacrifice himself for his people.

She didn’t want him to.

Daily Dozen – Prophecy: Caelestis and Aurorea – vampire romance book

Today my Daily Dozen comes from the second vampire romance book in my popular Vampires Realm series, which is also the second book in the Prophecy Trilogy–Prophecy: Caelestis and Aurorea.

Prophecy, a young vampire of the Caelestis bloodline, has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She’s caught up in a prophecy and destined to either save or destroy the world. Having made some grave mistakes, she has lost the man she loves, Valentine, a vampire of the Aurorea bloodline, and is searching for him, intent on saving him from her blood brother Arkalus and Valentine’s lord, Kalinor. At the end of her tether, she turns to an unlikely ally for help–Lord Hyperion of the Validus bloodline, the oldest vampire in existence.

The twin tall wooden doors in front of Prophecy opened and she stepped through them. She followed the raven still, letting it lead the way to Hyperion.

She couldn’t imagine what it must be like to see the world change as he would have. When he had been turned, there had been no Heaven and Hell, no bible, and the ancient civilisations of Greece and Egypt still flourished.

Entering a room, she came out of her thoughts when she felt the presence of great power and blinked when she saw him sitting at the opposite end of the room. He was reclining at a haphazard angle in a huge lushly furnished chair. One of his legs dangled over an arm of it while one hand hung limp, almost grazing the floor with the glass he held.

He didn’t bother sitting up when she approached, he only moved his gaze to rest on her and she faltered under the intensity of it.

His physical appearance wasn’t old like she had expected. His black hair and slim features reminded her painfully of Valentine, only he seemed even younger. At what age had he turned? The man in front of her didn’t look a day over thirty. His rich violet eyes receded, changing into a dark shade of brown that made the colour of hers pale in comparison.

Struggling to rescue Valentine from the malicious hands of her blood brother, Arkalus and the lord of Aurorea, Kalinor, Prophecy discovers just how powerful she is and how far people will go to stop her from fulfilling her destiny. Lives are lost, battles are won, and the scroll foretelling the prophecy is finally completed, but nothing can prepare them for what lies ahead.

Daily Dozen – Her Fallen Angel – angel romance book

My Daily Dozen today is from another book in my Her Angel romance series, Her Fallen Angel. Her Fallen Angel is book two in the series and another angel romance novella.

In this scene, Lukas, a fallen angel, has just spent a blisteringly hot night with Annelie, a mortal female that he has been falling for since being exiled to earth as punishment for a crime he didn’t commit. It’s morning and Lukas is paying for his night of drinking in her pub with the world’s biggest headache and isn’t quite in control of himself, or his hidden wings.

Annelie touched his shoulder blades and his skin shifted and itched.

No.

Lukas focused harder but it was too late. The urge drove through him, brought out by her teasing fingers and tender touch, and he couldn’t contain it. He gritted his teeth, tried with all of his might, but she swept her hands over his shoulder blades again.

“Don’t.” He started to move away from her but wasn’t quick enough.

His wings erupted from his back so fast that it hurt and they knocked her off the bed. She hit the floor with a thud.

No.

Lukas scrambled to his knees, naked on the bed, his white wings unfurled and stretching across the room. He grimaced when they caught the lamp on the bedside table and it toppled off and smashed.

Annelie sat nude on the wooden floor, staring up at him with wide eyes, her face ashen.

Did you all enjoy today’s Daily Dozen?

If you want to know more about Her Fallen Angel, read on…

Her Fallen Angel
Felicity Heaton
Annelie fell for Lukas the moment he walked into her pub three years ago. He’s stunning, his vivid green eyes lending to his otherworldly beauty, but he’s seriously out of her league. When he tells her that she’s beautiful and confesses that he wants her, she can’t resist him and his passionate kiss. She unleashes her desire and seizes the moment and Lukas with both hands. But Lukas has a secret, one that will test Annelie’s love for him and threaten to tear them apart.

He’s an angel.

Annelie can’t believe it when Lukas says that their feelings for each other aren’t a sin, but she can believe his pain when he tells her the reason he’s on Earth. He is fallen, cast out of Heaven as punishment for a crime he didn’t commit. Lukas isn’t about to give up and accept his fate though. He’s determined to prove both his innocence and his love for Annelie, and to show her that the intense passion they share is real.

When Lukas and Apollyon discover who framed him, will he be able to stop them from going after Serenity and Annelie? Will he be able to protect the woman he loves and fly away with her into their forever after?

ALL OF THE STORIES IN THE HER ANGEL SERIES STAND ALONE, JOINED BY CHARACTER AND WORLD ONLY, AND DO NOT NEED TO BE READ IN ORDER.
