Interviews and first review for Her Dark Angel

Well, it’s been an eventful first week of release for Her Dark Angel. I’ve had a couple of reviews back, and have done a couple of interviews too. The second interview was completely unscheduled too. Nocturne Romance Reads reviews Her Dark Angel and then invited me to do an interview with them because they liked it so much! I was thrilled and said yes.

Read the interview and review at Nocturne Romance Reads:

Here’s a snippet of the review, which gave Her Dark Angel a rating of 4 out of 5 hoots!
“Her Dark Angel is a very enticing romance, and once the story starts to sizzle it burns. This modern tale of a angel and a mortal falling in love was written beautifully, as well as Ms. Heaton’s attention to detail.  To be honest I never put my kindle down. Readers of romance will like the simplicity of this book, though the two main characters are a angel and a witch, the main focus of Her Dark Angel is the romance. Oh..and the steam from the romance department is a 9 out of a 10!” — Brandikay @ Nocturne Romance Reads

Her Dark Angel
by Felicity Heaton

An angel without a mission, Apollyon lives trapped in Hell guarding the bottomless pit. Surrounded by endless darkness, he longs to fly free on Earth once more but his master hasn’t called him in centuries. When the call finally comes, it’s to serve a new master, a beautiful woman he has often watched over, a woman who has always captivated him.

Serenity is shocked when a gorgeous black-winged angel shows up in her city of Paris claiming that she called him when she was only casting a simple vengeance spell. He’s no other than the angel of death! When Apollyon offers to obey her and help her have revenge on her cheating ex-boyfriend, she can’t resist the temptation, but can she resist him? Can an angel as dark as Apollyon ever fall for a mortal woman like her?

Their charade as lovers quickly becomes reality when one dance leads to another and Apollyon proves that he’s as sinful as he looks. His sensual and hungry touch brings Serenity back to life, freeing her from the hurt of being betrayed and reigniting her passion, but she can’t ignore her growing fear. Lost in their moment together, Apollyon realises that there is a reason he heard her call—he’s in love with her.

But will Serenity see past the wings and believe that Apollyon returns her feelings and won’t hurt her? When her ex-boyfriend asks her to forgive him and be with him again, will she take the easy route or will she find the courage to fly away with her dark angel?

Dark, passionate and sensual, Her Dark Angel is a tale of intense desire and deepest forbidden love guaranteed to get your heart racing.

Her Dark Angel is the first story in a three part series. All of the stories cross-over by characters and world only, not plot, so you’re free to enjoy them in any order. Keep your eyes peeled for Her Fallen Angel (coming October 2010) and Her Warrior Angel (coming November 2010)

indie authors and the digital publishing revolution

I’ve been thinking about e-books recently and the digital publishing revolution. The market is picking up so fast this year that it’s dizzying after the slow pace of the rise in ebook sales over the past five years.

Back in 2005, I started writing original fiction, and I was e-published with a now defunct publisher. Five years ago, we were apparently poised on the brink of the digital publishing revolution. We waited, but it didn’t happen. E-book sales were good if you had the readers or wrote the right sort of story, but it was nothing compared with now, and distribution was poor. Not many sites dealt with e-books. Readers mainly had the choice of the publisher’s website, Fictionwise, Diesel or Mobipocket.

E-publishers came and went, indie authors started to sprout up more and more, and the big distribution companies still argued about e-book formats and their e-readers, and publishers argued whether e-books were worth it at all. DRM debates were commonplace.

I became an independent author in 2006. Back then, we were labelled more commonly as self-published, and we were often outcast for it. Independent authors four years ago weren’t welcome at a lot of review sites, or on distribution channels. Myself and another author grouped up, and we formed Alinar Publishing with some author friends who were also looking to go indie. We believed that we could get our books edited just as well as the e-publishers were managing, could make covers that were just as good, and could sell more copies by ourselves, reaching a larger audience. It was true. We have had our ups and downs but we’ve managed to source editors, cover artists, and have built ourselves readerships. We even got ourselves distributed on Fictionwise. Back then, Fictionwise was everything. It was the best place to sell e-books, and it still contributes heavily to my book sales and market reach.

When Amazon opened its doors to indies and publishers alike, things moved swiftly and the digital revolution truly began. Smashwords joined in, bringing us a wider reach by allowing us to sell books on places like Kobo, Sony, and Barnes & Noble. Other places sat up and took notice. The indie revolution was well underway.

At least, it was if you were in the US.

Unfortunately, authors and publishers outside the US weren’t able to participate in the Kindle programme until earlier this year. The moment I could, I distributed a selection of my books on Kindle and Smashwords. Results were good once my pen names got off the ground in those two places, and they’re only getting better. E-books are going strong and even outselling hardbacks on Amazon.

iBookstore joined the Smashwords ranks, and Diesel, another large online ebook seller, has signed up too. I’m yet to see good results on iBookstore. For all the shouting about it, sales haven’t been amazing there, or at Barnes & Noble. Amazon is still the best place to be at the moment, with second place going to Fictionwise, and third to Kobo.

I haven’t been very active in promotion or marketing over the past year, so I’m yet to truly corner the market for paranormal romance books or science fiction romances. My focus on writing has taken me out of the game and I am only just starting to work on improving my platform and reach on the social networks that play such an important part in an authors marketing these days. Heck, I only signed up to Facebook in July and didn’t really start using it fully until August!

I think that digital publishing will grow, and that e-book sales will rise, but at the same time we face a bigger dilemma than lack of distribution now. Ease of distribution has led to many more writers deciding to self-publish. Unfortunately, with the good come the bad, and the terrible. Poorly edited stories are rife, as are books that are blatantly first drafts that haven’t even had a read through, or novels written by authors who have never studied the craft of plots, dialogue or creating characters that are more than one dimensional (or carbon copies of their favourite character in their favourite author’s novel). We’re all allowed our starter stories, but even those were edited.

Independent authors continue to struggle against the stigma attached to being self-published because of this reason alone. While we’ve been accepted at more review sites and blogs, and readers are giving us a chance to prove our worth, there’s still a lot of people and places out there who wouldn’t touch us with a barge pole. It’s something that we have to put up with for now and hope that in time the authors who give it their all and care about the product they’re producing will be noticed for what they’re worth. Hey, maybe if we’re lucky the bad writers will realise that those low sales and consistently poor ratings they get mean they should hit the drawing board and read some books on how to write, as well as a lot of novels, if they’re serious about being an author.

Another side effect of this rise in indie authors and indie publishing are those wanting to take advantage of our desire to reach a wider audience. Publishers Weekly recently announced that it would look at independently published novels and even review some if we paid a ridiculous sum of money. Of course, if they do feature or review you, you’ll be in a separate section away from the real books, as though you’re something that needs to be contained or you’ll contaminate the proper authors and their releases. There are distribution sites that want to charge you a similar sum for the pleasure of selling your e-books on their site, but they’ll still take a cut of your royalties too, and you have to make all the book formats. Why would an indie author pay to be distributed by a site when we can do it for free at so many places now? I just don’t understand that one.

I think there are still many hurdles to jump or fences to break down, but we’ll get there in the end, and I think that we’re here to stay now. Indie e-book authors were on shaky ground for years but it’s beginning to feel pretty solid beneath my feet. The future is bright for those who do things right and produce something good (and edited to the best of their capabilities/funding), and with 2011 pitched as the year e-books outsell paperbacks on Amazon, I can’t wait to see what it holds for independent authors!

Her Warrior Angel – making progress

I’m making progress with the first draft of Her Warrior Angel, the third and final novella in my Her Angel paranormal angel romance e-book series. It’s been slow going because I’ve been stuck in promo gear for the past couple of weeks. The release of Her Dark Angel, the first paranormal angel romance e-book in the series, has hindered my capacity to write and I’ve found myself spending more time thinking about how to effectively promote Her Dark Angel rather than writing Her Warrior Angel. So, when I write, it’s pretty slow to start with. Once I get into it, the flow improves and I’m clocking up the words, but it’s getting into that flow that is proving difficult.

I don’t usually get so stuck in promo mode when I have a new release, but this one is different as I’m trying out lots of  new avenues with promotion and there’s lots emails flying back and forth about wonderful opportunities being offered to me. I’m thrilled that there’s so much interest in me and these stories, and it’s sort of adding to the workload on the promo side of things, which is detracting from my writing time.

But still, I have made progress and I spent Tuesday reading what I had written for Her Warrior Angel so far over and I’m pretty pleased with it. I’ve totted up a few more words since then (around 7000) and we’re now up to 21283 as of 9am this morning. I have around three more chapters to go, so should be done by early next week, if I can stop my muse from buckling under promo pressure and keep my focus.

I might even finish it off this weekend if I’m not too busy being social online and getting my name around the interweb.

If I really focus, I could finish it by tomorrow evening. That would require 100% focus during my short writing periods though (train to work, lunch, train back from work). Doubt that’ll happen at the moment!

Onwards and upwards.

Her Warrior Angel – finally started writing it!

The muse loves me again. I’ve freed him from the prison of promotion and editing, and released him into the wilds of my mind. He’s glad to be back, and even though it was slow to start with and there were distractions yesterday (sudden thoughts about getting more of my books into kindle, promoting, etc), we’ve managed to clock up 2 chapters, equating to 6700 words, of Her Warrior Angel.

Her Warrior Angel will be the third book in the Her Angel series, although they all stand alone and you don’t have to read them in any particular order. It’ll be out on November 20th. Yes, I’m crazy enough to have a release date planned and advertising booked and paid for before I’ve even written a word for this story! I knew the muse would come up with the goods though. We have a very trusting relationship like that. Plus, it’s only a 30k story. Those don’t normally take me too long to write. A week in first draft, and then editing time.

It’s a relief to be writing again though. Let’s hope the flow continues. I’m hitting my stride with it now that I’ve begun chapter 3. My darling husband is working tonight, and I wish I could keep writing after I’ve jogged with my sister (and had a bath because my back is killing me) but there’s promo stuff to be done, so no time. I’ll just keep on with it tomorrow and see what word count we reach by the end of the day (after my train journey back from work).

I love my muse!

New romance author website is live

I’ve finally launched my new website. It’s been a long hard slog these past two months trying to get everything done on it and tested. I’ve learned my lesson though—never do a complete website overhaul to coincide with a new release. It’s just too stressful. It’s difficult enough to do one or the other but doing both at once was crazy. But the website is finally done, and I think it looks pretty nifty. There’s plenty of new stuff there and improved stuff too…

I am now selling my books direct through my website. You can sign up for an account and purchase books, which will appear on your permanent bookshelf. I only offer PDF and HTML e-books on my website, as you can purchase my books in different formats at other distributors. If you have been purchasing my books through Alinar Publishing, I’m taking a copy of the sales data for my stories and I’m adding it to my site, so any sale prior to right now will be on your bookshelf if you sign up using the same email address as you used at Alinar Publishing. If you find some of your books are missing when you do this, let me know and I’ll look into it.

Another area I’ve improved is the book pages. I’ve added some social media stuff so you can share the book with friends if you enjoyed it, or think they would enjoy it, and also added Facebook Like functionality, so you can like the book, and even leave a comment!

I have also added the ability to sign up for my newsletter. Signing up just means that you’ll receive an email when I have a new release, or do anything major to my website (such as adding fun things to the new section I have planned). You can either sign up to the newsletter when you sign up to the site, or you can use the link on the left hand navigation of the website or click on this link: http://bit.ly/cpWecC

Now, take a look at my new website: http://bit.ly/bSU2O1

Let me know what you think. All comments are welcome. You can either leave me a comment at my blog, on my Facebook post, or via email at author@felicityheaton.com or on my Twitter. I would love to hear what you think of the new website and I’m always open to suggestions for other stuff you would like to see on my website.

As mentioned, I do have a new section in progress. It’s going to be full of character interviews (including those we’ve done in the past), drabbles (short 100 fiction based on my stories), competitions, and other stuff. If you have a suggestion for something to go in there, let me know and I’ll see if I can add it in.

Also, if you want a real laugh to brighten your weekend… there’s a picture of me on the bio page now: http://bit.ly/aslZj9

If you’re on Facebook, I now have a Facebook profile there which you’re welcome to friend and I’ll friend you back, or I have a Facebook Fan Page for my books.

Hyperion – Vampires Realm paranormal romance series

It’s interesting to look at the comments on my previous post about what I should write next in my Vampires Realm paranormal romance series. You can read the post here if you would like to offer your opinion. All comments welcome: http://bit.ly/cO6bua

A large proportion of people are asking for Hyperion’s story to be next. I never realised the impact that Hyperion had, but a lot of you seem to really love him. I know that Candy does, because she’s adored him from the moment I wrote him and first showed him to her. Heck, Spellbound was written for her too, so it had to have a cameo by her favourite VR vampire!

So, I’m intrigued now. What is it that draws you to Hyperion? Is it his snarky side? The way he takes great amusement from others misfortune in love? Or that you all think he’s hiding a very sensitive side to him and you want to see it?

Has Eternity: The Beginning, the free short story I wrote about his turning, given you a glimpse of a different side to him, the side he hides beneath his impenetrable armour (and only really shows to his sister) and you want to meet the woman who can bring this strong vampire to his knees?

Surely all the mystery that you like so much about him would disappear if I wrote his novel? Or perhaps you’d love him even more?

All this Hyperion love has tempted me into continuing the Eternity series of short free stories charting Hyperion’s history. I think if I write his novel, I would have to write them, so you would know how he reached the point where he is today. I abandoned writing them because there wasn’t much interest in him at the time. But now I’m tempted to continue.

Would you all love to learn more about his past before you see his present?
