Vampires Realm – Masquerade

I was supposed to have planned the next Vampires Realm story this weekend, as well as doing a lot of other writing related work, but took a little me time in the end and read some books instead (Terry Pratchett, not romance books) as I needed to unwind a bit. I’ll be planning the story this week instead, and also the next novella in the Vampires Realm series too.

The one I’ll be starting to write next week is Masquerade (although the title might change), which is going to be centred around the Creator’s Day ball and focuses on two Venia guards. The hero and heroine are usually at loggerheads with each other (apologies if that doesn’t translate across the pond/around the world — it means they’re basically fighting / arguing all the time) but everything changes after they don masks for the ball, working undercover to protect the important dignitaries of the seven pure bloodlines. Cue misunderstandings, one of them not knowing it was the other one they were with at the ball, and a lot of danger and action. Quite a lot to squeeze into a novella. Plus, we’ll be catching up with some of the vampires from my previous stories, and meeting a few from future novels.

The next one after this is Hunter’s Moon and this time it’s a werewolf/vampire romance novella. Won’t say too much about it but there’ll be plenty of conflict and a show of alpha maleness towards the end.

I’m writing Masquerade for it to come out in January. Short notice again but my crazy 11 stories in 2011 isn’t going to wait for anyone, especially me. The muse is up for a writing frenzy, but he’ll get lazy once he realises that the natural order of things is for an editing frenzy to following the writing part… and I have a stack of books sitting in the to be edited pile.

Eleven romance e-books for 2011

I was going to call this post “eleven paranormal romance e-books for 2011” but then remembered that some of them are actually dark fantasy romance / fantasy steampunk romance ebooks, not paranormal.

And now that’s out of the way with, on to the point of this post!

I was rather absent from releasing new stories over the past year. Some ridiculous idea about getting an agent and leaving the world of indie publishing had me caught up in slaving over researching agents and publishers, and endlessly fiddling with a perfectly good novel that probably didn’t need that much tweaking at all, and writing another 3 novels for the same purpose. Because of this, and the fact that it appears my readers have stuck with me throughout my absence, I am going to make it up to everyone by doing something a little bit crazy.

Like releasing eleven e-books in 2011… yes… 11 books. And I’m not just talking novellas and short stories here.

I am going to write and release 4 novels and 6 novellas. What’s that I hear you cry? That’s only 10? Well, yes, but the muse is yet to decide whether number 11 is going to be a novella or a novel, although he has just given me an idea for a shape-shifter novel (which may jump the long queue of 16 other novels that are waiting to be written)

At least I have until December to figure out which novel or novella will be written for spot number 11, which gives me plenty of time to plan, write, and edit it.

And what sort of stories are the other ten novels and novellas? Well, there’s a good mix. You’ve got some paranormal vampire romance novels (including one rather epic book), two Vampires Realm novellas, two Tri-Kingdom novellas (a fantasy steampunk romance series I started but I’m now re-writing some of them), an urban fantasy romance, a shapeshifter novella, and a werewolf romance novella. Plus, whatever number 11 turns out to be (it could be anything if the muse doesn’t go with this new story – I have Vampires Realm novels, Tri-Kingdom novels, science-fiction romances, vampire romances, werewolf romances… and urban fantasy romances).

I’ll keep track my progress with these novels and novellas, and this challenge here. I’ve already blogged about some of them – Love Immortal (out Feb 2011), Ascension (out May 2011), Forbidden Blood (out July 2011) and Heart of Darkness (out Oct 2011) – which are the four novels that make up part of the challenge.

I haven’t written a bean about the novellas yet, as I haven’t started them! I’ll dream up some suitable working titles and then start posting when I begin writing them. I’m due to start writing the first Vampires Realm novella this month, once I’ve written Vampire for Christmas, which is my seasonal release this year, and which I’m starting the first draft of on Monday. But that’s a different post…

Hyperion – Vampires Realm paranormal romance series

It’s interesting to look at the comments on my previous post about what I should write next in my Vampires Realm paranormal romance series. You can read the post here if you would like to offer your opinion. All comments welcome: http://bit.ly/cO6bua

A large proportion of people are asking for Hyperion’s story to be next. I never realised the impact that Hyperion had, but a lot of you seem to really love him. I know that Candy does, because she’s adored him from the moment I wrote him and first showed him to her. Heck, Spellbound was written for her too, so it had to have a cameo by her favourite VR vampire!

So, I’m intrigued now. What is it that draws you to Hyperion? Is it his snarky side? The way he takes great amusement from others misfortune in love? Or that you all think he’s hiding a very sensitive side to him and you want to see it?

Has Eternity: The Beginning, the free short story I wrote about his turning, given you a glimpse of a different side to him, the side he hides beneath his impenetrable armour (and only really shows to his sister) and you want to meet the woman who can bring this strong vampire to his knees?

Surely all the mystery that you like so much about him would disappear if I wrote his novel? Or perhaps you’d love him even more?

All this Hyperion love has tempted me into continuing the Eternity series of short free stories charting Hyperion’s history. I think if I write his novel, I would have to write them, so you would know how he reached the point where he is today. I abandoned writing them because there wasn’t much interest in him at the time. But now I’m tempted to continue.

Would you all love to learn more about his past before you see his present?

werewolf romance book idea

The muse is being very kind to me since I started gearing up to write again. This time he’s given me inspiration for a new werewolf romance book. It’ll probably be a novella, and both the rather headstrong and independent heroine and the hero are werewolves. I won’t say too much about it except that it’ll probably turn out rather sexy and explosive. I love it when the muse gives me strong heroines who aren’t about to let a man walk all over them. Of course, the hero is a total alpha and he’s not about to take no for an answer either… and then there’s the competition for him… another alpha male who shares his intention–to make the heroine his. Of course, both men have a reason for wanting to make the heroine theirs, and when she finds out, she’s not going to be a happy gal!

It’s quite exciting. I now have four ideas for novellas bubbling away in my head. Two are stories in the Vampires Realm series, and two are stand alone stories. I reckon they’ll all be 25-40,000 words each. Of course, they’re all paranormal romance books. The muse is on a real paranormal romance kick at the moment. We have pairings of vampire/vampire, werewolf/vampire, this werewolf/werewolf one, and a cat-shifter/shifter-hunter one. I’ll probably write them all by the end of the year in at least first draft. They’ll probably be released next year… if the muse is kind and lets me write them fast and get them edited (I have to edit some novels too, and I have a few new novels to write, so time is limited).

Any of those pairings sound interesting to you?

Vampires Realm stories – what’s next?

A lovely reader emailed me yesterday asking all manner of questions about the Vampires Realm series. I was thrilled to have someone ask me about River and Ineru, and whether they would ever have their story written. I have notes for it, as I do for quite a few Vampires Realm series stories, but it wasn’t actually on my list of stories to write soon.

She also asked about Hyperion and whether he would have his own love, and his own story too. He does have his own love, a true love that he has never forgotten since meeting and then leaving her. She’s mentioned in Winter’s Kiss. He only mentions her by whispering her name – Sakura.

The reader got me thinking about the series last night and what stories I have notes for and want to write for it. There’s a few novels to write, and I have some novellas. The novellas mainly introduce new characters into the Vampires Realm series. The novels deal with the stories of those characters we have already met in previous stories, or have heard about. I’m sure I’ll manage to somehow bring more stories to life via these stories too, dropping hints at things to come and such. There’s definitely some of that in Midnight.

So now I’m thinking about Vampires Realm and I really want to get writing the next vampire romance in this series. This is either because I’m rejuvenated and excited by the series (which I am) or because the muse is so cranky because I haven’t written anything in weeks as I’ve been doing my website redesign work that he’s desperate for me to write anything and this seems like a pretty good chance for that to happen! (maybe a little of that too).

It’s opinion time. The novellas I have planned will definitely get written this year/next year, but I have a slew of novels not in the Vampires Realm series that I want to write too. I could probably squeeze a couple of Vampires Realm novels in to my writing schedule for next year though. So, what do you think I should choose as the novels to write? Here’s a rundown.

Blood Moon
Mia and Dmitri’s story about how they met and came to be together. Historical vampire/werewolf romance.

Midnight
Oneiric’s (in Seventh Circle) story about how he met Clare/Eve and the terrible mess they found themselves in, and got themselves (and a lot of the world) out of.

Forever After
Ineru and River’s story about a love that transcends time as River is reincarnated over and over until he finally finds his way back to Ineru. But will he love her now that he’s a vampire hunter?

Untitled
Hyperion and Sakura’s story. Hyperion falls in love with a young geisha, only to have to leave her when she discovers that he’s a vampire. What will he do when she returns to him as part of the eastern party he must entertain at his mansion? Can he win her heart again now that she has become a vampire? Did she do it so she would find him one day?

What shall I write?

Review for Winter’s Kiss – werewolf / vampire romance novel

The lovely Melissa at Spellboundbybooks.com won a copy of Winter’s Kiss a few months ago and kindly posted a review on her website!

Melissa said:
“There is so much inner turmoil with each character all throughout the book.  Winter has a duty to his Lord and falling for a girl who is a werewolf is a big no-no in the vampire community, punishable by death.  Nika has just been turned into a werewolf against her will, and watched her village and father die.  She falls in love with Winter and can’t understand what is stopping them being together.

A fabulous book told in third person present tense, in both Nika and Winter’s POV.  Winter’s Kiss is a tale of forbidden love destined to fail and well worth the read.  (Theres a bit of violence and a raunchy sex scene too)”

The tales of the mansion near Nika’s remote Russian village say that its lord drinks blood to live and that the guards are dead men walking, but that doesn’t stop Nika from falling for one of them—a man who seemingly hasn’t changed in twenty years, a man she wishes would be hers. One snowy spring night, her world and his collide when she is attacked by wolves and he rides in on a black horse to rescue her. But her knight in shining armour is far from saintly. He is a vampire, and she is becoming a werewolf, and love between such species is forbidden—the penalty death.

Winter is a commander of the Validus, the most powerful vampire bloodline in Europe. Faithful to his family and his lord since his turning one thousand years ago, he follows the law to the letter and places duty above all else, but his resolve is about to be tested in the most painful way and his world shaken beyond salvation. The girl he watched grow into a woman, a woman who has stolen his heart, is now a werewolf and his dream of making her his has been shattered. Only vengeance can be his now or the Law Keepers will hunt him down and kill both him and Nika.

But Winter’s plan to take Nika home to her family only leads to her witnessing the destruction of her village and the death of her father at the hands of the werewolf trying to claim her, and Winter finds that he can’t leave her. His heart demands that he protects Nika from the werewolf, Willem, by killing him and that he finds her a new home, somewhere she will be safe without him, for he must even protect her from himself. But Nika tempts him more than he can bear and it isn’t long before he finds himself treading the knife’s edge between upholding the law and succumbing to desire.

Nika does everything in her power to convince Winter to stay with her, to go against the laws and risk death, but in the end will she have done enough? When they reach the last bastion of the werewolves, will Winter leave her with her kin? Will the nights they spend together change his heart and his mind, or will she spend eternity dreaming of Winter’s kiss?

THE VAMPIRES REALM STORIES ALL STAND ALONE AND DO NOT NEED TO BE READ IN ORDER. THEY ARE LINKED ONLY BY THE WORLD IN WHICH THEY ARE SET. IF YOU ENJOY THIS STORY, BE SURE TO READ THE OTHERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS DARK AND PASSIONATE WORLD.

Heart of Darkness – vampire romance novel complete in first draft – and Her Dark Angel

Well, I finished writing the first draft of my latest vampire romance novel, Heart of Darkness, this week. I finished it on Wednesday and it’s complete at 124,546 words, written in 3.5 weeks! That’s pretty good going I think. I’ve had a good time writing it and although I had a moment in the third week where I was stuttering a bit, and I had to push myself in the final week to get it finished, I’m rather happy with the outcome.

I don’t think I’ll be killing myself to get my next novel written so quickly, although I have freed up some time in which I decided to write a couple of the short stories for my A Day In The Life series of free ebooks, and I’ve even decided to write a rather steamy paranormal romance novella too which I’m burning through right now. I can hopefully find some time to write another few paranormal romance stories which I have ideas for, all shorts or novellas, in between editing my three bigger stories.

I wrote the A Day In The Life story for Lilith, from Seventh Circle, and Balt, from Sons of Lyra: Slave Princess, which are both due out over summer. Both of them turned out at 3000 words. The whole series is made up of free ebooks that are around that length or up to 4000 or so. I’m going to be proofing the stories for Kim, from In Heat, and Valentine, from the Prophecy Trilogy and Spellbound, tomorrow.

I’m going to start on the second draft of Forbidden Blood on Wednesday this week when I have some holiday time for a few days. The usual trick to start with, giving it a good read through on paper pretending to be just a reader and making notes on the obvious things to fix. I’ve allocated four weeks to do the second draft, which should be enough time based on how long it’s taken me to do second drafts on previous novels of similar length. Besides, this one is in pretty good shape already and there’s only a few things that I know I might want to fix or improve, besides the usual of fight scenes, death scenes and love scenes.

As for the new erotica paranormal romance novella I’m writing, that’s quite fun right now and I’m flying through it with almost 9000 words written for it only yesterday. I haven’t really planned this one, which is unusual for me. I only have a few scraps of notes for it which I’m working from and giving my muse free leave with the rest. I should have it done by Tuesday night though so I don’t impact on my second draft of Forbidden Blood. This story is a new sub-genre of paranormal romance for me. Her Dark Angel features a witch for a heroine and an angel for the hero. It’s going to be the same sort of heat level as my In Heat stories, with plenty of love scenes and passion, and a deep attraction between the hero and heroine. I can’t really say much about it without giving it all away! I’ve written angels before in Seventh Circle, both the good sort and the sort that have been corrupted, and I enjoy spinning a new take on them, and I’ll be doing the same with this one, only this time he’s the hero!

I’m over my parents right now gearing up for a birthday party and my father, with the announcement “This will get you going” handed me a section of The Guardian with its Ten Rules For Writers… Gee thanks. At least this time it’s only best selling authors giving their top ten tips for writing, and I definitely live by all of Neil Gaiman’s ones already. Last time it was a how to write type thing.

Update next week with progress on Her Dark Angel.
