Forced start… but we’re on our way

I haven’t written for over two months, so when it came time to start Arcadian in earnest, it was difficult to work up the energy to get going, especially since I have to carry my laptop with me to London everyday if I want to write. The lazy side of me wanted to put starting off until this weekend, throwing out the schedule, but I managed to get going and once I did, it wasn’t so difficult.

Whenever I have a break in writing, it’s always difficult to get back into it. My mind seems to ask why I have to write and then my heart argues that I love to write, I enjoy it, so get going! It’s war, but with a peaceful outcome once the muse gives me a royal kick up the backside and I finally start writing.

I have hit a snag already though. Something which I feared when I had written out the plot outline and seen the length of it! The other day when my laptop had succumbed to a lack of battery and died on me (after around 3.5 hours of writing. good laptop!) I went through the plot outline for the novel and roughly divided it into chapters. I was a little unnerved when I found it might be another 30 chapters. I had already completed 4 at this point, and my average length for a chapter is around 5000 words in this story. That means the novel is looking at coming out around the 170,000 words mark. Far too high if I want to get it trade published by approaching publishers and agents. When I made it home, I checked some of the first novels of other paranormal romance authors and they all varied between 90,000 and 130,000. Most publishers state they want a length of 70,000 to 100,000. If I can get an agent, I might be able to get away with 130,000… or perhaps if my submitted three chapters are good enough, then a publisher might overlook the length… but 170,000??? I’m really hoping that my chopping up of the plot into chapters is wrong and it does come out nearer to 130,000. When I had finished writing up the plot outline, I had an inkling that it was no longer a 100,000 word story as I had first anticipated, but rather one nearer to 130,000. I’m still hoping that my instincts are right on that one!

So, the word count so far (and pretty much for just this past week) is:

Arcadian
27,791 / 125,000
[22.2%]

I’m going to stick with 125,000 as the target. I’m almost at the quarter mark in that case and probably 2 chapters from the first gateway/point of no return.

I also realised on the train home last night that we’re seeing a lot from the heroine’s POV but not a tremendous amount from the hero. He’s had around 1.25 chapters so far, and she’s had around 3.75. Right now it’s important we’re with her though, and I know there are a lot more chapters with the hero to come in the 1/4 to 1/2 way point in the story.

That’s all for now. I’ll try to keep these posts regular. I’ve been so focused on editing and improving my stories recently that as I write, I find myself thinking about previous chapters and things that might need to be changed or chopped to keep the pace. I’m just writing them down in a notebook for now and I’ll address them when I get around to the second draft. I’m not one for tinkering as I write. I’m of the “get it written, then get it right” school of philosophy.

Time for house stuff now – washing, tidying, a bit of exercise, and installing a new shower with my dad!

I really want to keep writing. I haven’t felt the writing bug like this for a long time. It doesn’t help that I almost missed my stop on the train last night because I was so engrossed in writing and I left the hero on the verge of a rather swoon-worthy speech to the heroine!

Novel planning phase is almost over!

Well, it’s taken a while but the planning phase for Arcadian is almost over. I’m just putting the finishing touches to the character bios and printing out some information that I typed up so I can put it into a binder with all my bios, plot outline and scene notes.

It took almost two weeks to write up the plot outline in my non-work time. Sometimes having to work really gets in the way of writing. Still, it’s done now… but I have this feeling that the story isn going to be longer than I expected it to be. I had a feeling that it would be around the 100,000 words mark, but now that I’ve written up a comprehensive plot outline, it feels as though it’s going to be closer to 130,000 words. It might not be, but normally my inklings about these kinds of things are pretty close to the mark.

I can’t wait to get writing again but it’s going to take quite a lot of psyching up as it’s been a while since I’ve done any writing and I have become quite comfortable with just learning Japanese and doing other things in my time to and from work on the train.

I’ll let you know more as I progress. Probably weekly updates so I can see how I’m getting along and track my progress, and so you guys can see how it’s coming too!

Speak soon,

It’s a new year!

Well, it’s a new year which means it’s time to sit down and have a good think about what I want to get out of the next 12 months. There’s many things on my list–life stuff like achievement at work, fitness, learning new things, improving my Japanese–and then there’s writing stuff, which is the stuff I’ll talk about here.

I was working hard in the last quarter of 2008 to write stories for this year so I can work on a new novel of my. At the moment, it’s just called Project Arcadian, or Arcadian for short. I will be making posts following my work on this novel but won’t be revealing too much about it. I’m sure the suspense will just make the wait more worthwhile!

I have plenty of success to be thankful for in 2008. A lot of my releases were best sellers in the romance list at Fictionwise.com, which was amazing to see story after story make it into the top ten. All 4 of the Sons of Lyra stories made the top ten in romance, along with Seventh Circle, and two other short paranormal stories of mine.

It’s those two that really have meant the world to me because I wrote A Promise of Passion and Embracing the Wolf for the Harlequin Nocturne Bites short romance ebook line, and both were rejected. The Nocturne Bites stories barely break into the top 25 in romance on Fictionwise, so having my two rejected stories sitting pretty in the top 10, was heartwarming to say the very least! A Promise of Passion reached number 9, and Embracing the Wolf has reached number 3 (and also number 8 in the overall best seller list on Fictionwise). It just goes to show that just because someone rejects a story, it doesn’t mean it won’t sell or people won’t want to read it. If someone rejects a story of yours, try someone else, or try self-publishing.

Thanks to all the wonderful readers who bought a story by me last year, and to my faithful who buy all my stories and help me walk on clouds by emailing me about them.

In 2009 I hope to bring you more wonderful stories that you’ll enjoy reading. I have another Vampires Realm novel coming out (when it behaves itself and I finally finish edits!) called Winter’s Kiss, and I have the Daughters of Lyra series. Originally there were four novellas in this series, to match the Sons of Lyra series, but now there’ll be five.

I wish you all a happy new year, and good luck with all your resolutions. If you want to, share them with me on this blog and we can work towards completing them together!

Latest Romance Ebook Reviews

It’s been a while since I posted reviews for my stories… I’m so behind! So here’s the latest reviews that I’ve received.

Seventh Circle
Dark, sensual and fast-paced, Seventh Circle is a story of forbidden love so strong that it will save the world.

Born with strange powers similar to a vampire’s, Lilith has spent her life hunting demons for Section Seven. Now, on the very same night that she watches a vampire kill her best friend, she’s faced with her worse nightmare.

A client who is not only attractive, but a vampire.

Lincoln, a powerful pure blood vampire, has a problem. The prophecy he’s caught up in is coming to pass and his only chance of survival is relying on those he hates most—vampire hunters. It has been foretold that one will save him, a female hunter, and when he meets her, the attraction he feels is both instantaneous and forbidden.

Their mutual attraction becomes difficult to deny as they work to unravel the mystery of a contract between Lincoln’s lord and the Devil. The barriers around their hearts fall, but is there only pain ahead of them? With Lincoln’s life on the line, can Lilith find the strength to protect him and embrace a side of herself that she wished didn’t exist? Can Lincoln overcome his fear in order to save Lilith even if it means parting from her forever? What price will they pay to be together?

Reviews:

“Seventh Circle was the first book of Heaton’s that I have read, I went in not knowing what to expect and came out finding a great new author. This story moved quickly and never had a slow moment to place the bookmark. Lilith had a hard time separating the man from the vampire when it came to Lincoln. Lincoln sees being attracted to Lilith as just one more sin to add to his ever growing list. You have so many elements in one book. Looking past appearances and seeing the real person inside. Finding out that you are stronger than you think you are and that love is worth sacrificing for. It is a Romeo and Juliet story with fangs and stakes.”Megan, Bitten by Books5 out of 5 (read the whole review)
“Seventh Circle is a fabulous read. Once you start you’ll find yourself sneaking time in when you should be doing other things to read that next scene, then the next chapter. The interaction between the two characters is strong and well defined. Lilith is a fabulous character who goes through emotional torture in order to save the man she loves. And Lincoln, well, let’s just say he’s every woman’s idea of a dark, super sexy vampire. I will most certainly be awaiting the next Vampires Realm novel.”Alyson J, We Write Romance4 out of 4 (read the whole review)
“Lincoln and Lilith have great chemistry as they are thrust into battle after battle, saving each other’s lives while each fight the compelling attraction between them. I won’t give away the plot, but I will tell you that it’s chock full of demons, hell-bound contracts, angels, even Cerberus, with Lincoln’s marked soul the suitable exchange for the contract to be fulfilled. The action is fast-paced, the romance tender, and the characters’ personalities sharp. You’ll be glad you read this one.”Clover Autrey, ParaNormal RomanceDecember 08 Reviewer’s Pick (read the whole review)
“Seventh Circle is a fast moving read, full of action and powerful drama. I love the strong trait that transcends in Lilith. She is vibrant and feisty, able to stand on her own next to Lincoln. I could practically see her expressions when she told him to clean up after himself, and not to get blood on her sheets or couch. Lincoln is an enigma whose charisma swoons through the pages. When you put the two in the same room, it is like an electric current when they connect. F.E. Heaton gives her readers a spellbound of a story that pulls the reader into the pages like a magnet. She instills a well-developed cast that delivers a splendid tale.”Cherokee, Coffee Time Romance4 out of 5 (read the whole review)

A Promise of Passion
A dark, sensual and action packed story of two hearts, united in their passion and desire, but divided by their blood, A Promise of Passion is guaranteed to get your heart racing.

Alicia is a vampire hunter, unable to find a man strong enough to love and accept her for who she is. When Kassian, a tall and seductively handsome vampire walks into her life and vows to protect her, she doesn’t know what to think or feel. His eyes make promises that his searing touch backs up, but she can’t get past the fact that he’s a vampire and the fact that he thinks she’s someone else.

Kassian is certain from the moment he sets eyes on Alicia that she’s the reincarnation of his lost love and sire, and he’ll stop at nothing to convince her and make her his again. A taste of her blood makes him realise his mistake but doesn’t change his feelings or his resolve to have her.

Their mutual attraction is impossible to resist but a moment of passion places Alicia in the path of danger when Seth, the vampire responsible for murdering Kassian’s sire, sets his sights on her. When Alicia is dragged into a game of human sport, how far will Kassian go to protect his love? Can he save her or will history repeat itself?

Reviews:

“Alicia is a strong but lonely character craving a loving relationship. It was interesting to watch as she battled herself and her feelings for Kassian. He is as strong as ever and has practiced and perfected his skills and strengths. I loved his quiet strength and surety in his own abilities. As a pair, they make an unbeatable wall loyal to each other to the end. Ms Heaton has written a vibrant tale of true love beating even natural enemies.”Hollie, Coffee Time Romance4 out of 5 (read the whole review)
“I was amazed at the amount of description, action, and passion that was packed into such a short book. Felicity Heaton has a talent with words, describing everything in such detail; I could feel myself there with her characters. I can only imagine the power of a longer book written by this amazing author.”Melissa C, Fallen Angel Reviews5 out of 5 (read the whole review)

Ascension and Arcadian

Many thanks to everyone who kindly read my story codenamed Ascension and gave me feedback on it. Most of you seemed to feel the same about the story as I did – there’s more to it and it deserves to be a novel. Well, because of this feedback, I have decided to turn the short story into a full novel and I’ll be working on writing that next year, along with another story.

The other story is currently codenamed Arcadian. This will be a long paranormal romance that in my mind will be pushing the 100k words mark. Normally my built in length predictor is pretty on the nose. There’s a lot of story in this one, so it may even go over, but it will end up being edited down to 100k if that is the case.

I don’t really want to say much about either story at this point, only that I’ll be working on them in 2009, and that they’re both paranormal romances with a lot of plot. I’ll be writing Arcadian first, and then following that up with Ascension. I have another story or two that I’ll consider writing at the same time as these, but my focus will be on them first and foremost.

As for the future of both these stories, if they turn out as planned then I will submit them to agents and publishers.

Back to work for me. Seventh Circle, the next Vampires Realm novel, is out on November 16th, and I still have a lot of promotion work and stuff to get ready for it.

Happy Halloween everyone!

New stories, and finished stories, and submissions

I’ve been quite busy recently, working through a mixture of writing, editing, and preparing submissions. It’s all a mixture of projects too, most of which will be available next year. Actually, all of it will probably be next year’s releases.

On the writing front, I have finished writing the next Vampires Realm release after Seventh Circle, which will be Winter’s Kiss. Winter’s Kiss follows a Watchman of Validus and a young woman whom he desired to turn. The young woman is attacked by a werewolf and the vampire rescues her but not before she’s been bitten by the werewolf, and essentially turned. It all turns a little frantic after that and there’s lots of my trademark UST 🙂

Speaking of Vampires Realm, I again toyed with the idea of submitting Seventh Circle to agents and publishers, and have (after a lot of preparation including writing a synopsis!) decided against it. It’s so difficult when it’s a story that is part of an ongoing series. I could have changed the story so it was a stand alone, but I didn’t want to do that. When it comes to stories to submit to publishers, I’ll focus on my series I’ll be writing next year instead.

Following the popularity and success of my Sons of Lyra series, I have planned and started writing a Daughters of Lyra series. At the moment, they’re running at a little longer than the Sons of Lyra stories. I think they’ll be an average of 18,000 words. The series follows one daughter from each of the four sons from the first series. I’ve already written two of the stories during my week off dog-sitting last week. I managed to clock in around 34,000 words written which is brilliant. A normal week for me is around 25,000.

The weekend I released Sons of Lyra: Stranded I submitted a second story to Harlequin’s Nocturne Bites series. This time it’s a werewolf story and I’m far more pleased with this submission than the first one I sent. I think this time I sounded more professional and sold the story better, and I do think this story is probably more suited to the line.

I think that’s about all in terms of writing from me. I’ve just discovered that there’s a new episode of Macross Frontier out online and I neeeed to watch it. I’m so addicted!

Here’s some tallys on the stories I finished this week…

Winter’s Kiss
67,726 / 65,000
[104.2%]
Daughters of Lyra 1
18,652 / 18,000
[103.6%]
Daughters of Lyra 2
23,043 / 18,000
[128%]

sick and busy

Well it’s one illness on top of another right now but I’m not going to let it slow me down! I currently have an ear infection (for two weeks now I’ve been practically deaf in one ear. very annoying) and now I have a cold too, which is make me doubly grouchy!

It didn’t stop me from writing last week though. I finally found my flow with Winter’s Kiss, the next Vampires Realm novel after Seventh Circle, and was writing at every available opportunity last week. Those opportunities included grabbing 30 minutes in starbucks each morning before work and snagging the odd 40 minutes after work in starbucks too. It’s costing me a lot in starbucks right now! The up side to this was that I wrote over 31000 words this week, which makes me smile, and means that I now have around 20000 words to write before this story is finished.

Once I’ve finished writing the first draft of Winter’s Kiss, I’ll move on to writing Arcadian, which is my next free serial and needs a proper title.

I’ve recently finished writing a third attempt at a Nocturne Bite. I’m much happier with this one, but I’m still not holding my breath since I don’t think I write the Harlequin style. I also have my second attempt to send off to them but just haven’t had the time to finish writing up my submission and preparing the manuscript to send over to them. I’ll hopefully manage to do that next weekend and send it off. By the time I hear back, I’ll have the third one ready to send in. I think I’m done after that as I just don’t have time to write anymore. I need to focus on the stories I’ll be releasing next year, which will provide me cover while I write my new series.

I have a few stories to write for next year. Winter’s Kiss will be an early 2009 release. I have another mini-series of short stories to write too and potentially another Vampires Realm novel. Of Blood & Snow will be edited and released in 2009.

That’s me for now…
