Having recently acquired a shiny new bookshelf to house my growing collection of books and keep them relatively dust free, I then ended up with an office cluttered with new bookcase and old bookcases. I spent most of Friday morning tidying my office so I could settle down there again and get on with my work. Contrary to the usual pattern for a designer / creative type, I can’t work surrounded by mess. I need space and neatness to bring out the best in me, otherwise I get easily frustrated and stressed out. I know that amongst the highly creative that’s rare, but here I am… freak of nature. The neater my surroundings are, the more relaxed I feel, and the better I work.
My writer’s den is now rather orderly and neat, just the way I like it, so I thought I would share some pictures so everyone can see just where the magic happens. I even keep all my various swag tucked away in my cupboards so I don’t have to see it. When I originally redecorated my den of iniquity, I was going to put up pictures of my favourite book covers, but then I realised that I really liked all that clean flat colour around me. I do have some pictures, namely my awesome original from many moons ago Lost Boys poster, and some holiday snaps on my corkboard, so when things get glum, I can take a peek at places I’ve been a find some serenity.
So, here’s a guided tour of my fabulous writer’s den, and whenever I talk about working (at least when I’m at home) you’ll be able to imagine where I am when it’s happening…
See, I wasn’t lying when I said I needed things insanely tidy! All I need is my computer, a notebook or two, and my wallplanner so I know what has to be done for when… The cupboard is stuffed with promo stuff like trading cards, calendars, bookmarks. It’s also the home of a lot of notebooks for my stories and outlines that I have a tendency to keep if I don’t have a digital copy. Oh, and a heck of a lot of notes for stories that I haven’t written too. I jot down all my ideas. Some of these go waaay back. It’s a gold mine in there.
My shiny new bookcase and my guitar has made the trip up to my office too.
Yes, that’s my cat doing a sneaky peek at the new addition to my writer’s den. As always, curiosity my dear cat… most of the bottom of my bookcase is full of my books, books on writing, reference books, and a whole shelf full of paranormal romance books (it’s two books deep, so there’s double what’s on show). Mostly, it’s Gena Showalter, Lara Adrian, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan, with some others like J R Ward, Larissa Ione, etc. I have most of my books as ebooks these days. The rest of my bookcase is full of my anime figurines (mainly Gundam 00 and Bleach), some of my manga, and lots of other toys. Oh, and before someone asks… the angry looking lion on top of the bookcase is Kon from Bleach. I adore Kon.
My guitar looks totally awesome with my bookcase. I think it was driving my husband insane when it was downstairs.
That concludes the tour… if you see anything and want to know what the heck it is, just shout in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer!
Hope you enjoyed this glimpse into my writer’s den!
