Daughters of Lyra: Heart of a Mercenary
Princess Miali, one of the beautiful and strong daughters of Lyra, is an ambassador for Lyra. Her true identity is kept secret to protect her but it’s her beauty that puts her in danger when slavers attack her ship while she’s in cryo-sleep. When she wakes, she finds herself heading for the markets, her only company the ship’s handsome young Minervan doctor. Kosen makes Miali’s body react like no man before him, sending her hair floating with her positive emotions and making her wonder if she might just be falling for her captor.
Kosen has been part of Nostra’s crew since his two sisters were sold into slavery. His only desire is to gain enough money to buy them back, and Miali’s sale will get him just that. But the more time he spends with her, the more he realises that the path he chose was a mistake and the life he’s led is a shameful one. When he discovers Miali’s secret, he agrees to help her escape, and not just because she promises him the money he needs. Miali fascinates him with her beauty and the way her body reacts to him, and he can’t help believing that they might have a chance with each other, and he might have a chance at a better life.
Can Kosen help Miali escape the slaver vessel and the terrible future that awaits her at the markets? Will he be able to save his sisters and change the course of his life? And will Miali be able to convince Kosen to stay with her?

My two most recent releases, the science fiction romance Daughters of Lyra: Heart of an Emperor, and the vampire/werewolf romance novel Winter’s Kiss, are both top ten best sellers at Fictionwise.com.
Winter’s Kiss, part of the Vampires Realm series, has reached number 6 in romance and number 14 in the recent best sellers list after its first week. Daughters of Lyra: Heart of an Emperor has maintained a top ten position in romance for the third week and has now moved back up to number 7 in romance and number 16 in the recent best sellers list.
The tales of the mansion near Nika’s remote Russian village say that its lord drinks blood to live and that the guards are dead men walking, but that doesn’t stop Nika from falling for one of them–a man who seemingly hasn’t changed in twenty years, a man she wishes would be hers. One snowy spring night, her world and his collide when she is attacked by wolves and he rides in on a black horse to rescue her. But her knight in shining armour is far from saintly. He is a vampire, and she is becoming a werewolf… Read more

Daughters of Lyra: Heart of an Emperor
Princess Sophia, one of the beautiful and strong daughters of Lyra, has had it with the never-ending row of suitors that her father, King Sebastian Lyra I, has lined up for her. When the latest suitor turns out to be the emperor of Varka, a species known for their lack of emotions, nocturnal lifestyle and bloodlust, Sophia wants little to do with him.
But when she greets the emperor and his two attendants, Sophia realises that a Varkan makes her heart beat like no other man before him and might just win her after all. Only, it isn’t the emperor who was caught her eye.
Regis, Count of Sagres, is transfixed from the moment he meets Sophia. She pushes him to the brink of surrendering control to his bloodlust with every beautiful glance and smile she throws his way. But would she ever marry a male who doesn’t know the meaning of love? Fear of the bloodlust makes Varkans retain an iron grip on their emotions, but Regis is willing to surrender control and risk everything to win Sophia. And Sophia will do whatever it takes to make him see that Varkans can love and that she wants no other man in the universe, including triggering his bloodlust and putting the whole palace in danger!
Will Regis’s feelings for Sophia be enough to stop him from hurting her and killing the entire palace? Will Sophia be able to love a man that the universe sees as a monster? And will she still love him when she realises the Varkans’ deception?

I’m back from my travels to Italy. Verona was wonderful, Venice was as lovely and as crowded as ever, and Lake Garda was absolutely stunning! I’m missing the balmy 35c temperatures now though as I’m back in a slightly drizzling and very cold England, which can only boast a measely 16c temperature today. It’s been raining non-stop. Such a stark contrast to the eternal sunshine and heat of Italy.
I am refreshed now and ready for getting on with my writing work. Of course, any sense of calm and relaxation I have right now will be shattered on Monday morning when I have to get up at 6am to go to work. Bleh! I’m sure all you commuters out there can sympathise. It’s horrible having to slog into London every day of the week to work. One day I will be a stay at home writer. Joke! My husband says that I’ll go crazy if that happened. I get cabin fever if I’m left alone in the house for a whole day, let alone the whole week!!!
I’m not sure what the writing plan is right now. I have to sit down and figure out what needs to be done and then go from there. I definitely want to get Winter’s Kiss polished up and ready for release sooner rather than later. I would like to be able to expand Ascension as planned but I’m not sure when that will happen. 3 out of 5 of my Arcadian readers have come back with their comments and I have those to think about once I have the other 2 readers responses in. I don’t plan to start work on the Arcadian polish until July though, which leaves me a few weeks of June to play around with. I think that I’ll be finishing the proof of Winter’s Kiss and then writing Ascension, and then doing the polish on Arcadian.
I also have to keep up with my Japanese as I’m starting to flag on that front and need to really concentrate more on it now that it’s getting more difficult and I’m learning higher level things.
On a brighter note, the first Daughters of Lyra story came out this week on Fictionwise.com. Heart of an Emperor isn’t out on Alinar Publishing until tomorrow but Fictionwise have strange deadlines and release dates so it ended up coming out a week earlier there. I’m hoping that it does well but I’ve never had a story released there a week before it’s actually due for release. I don’t think it’s doing it any favours right now, and I suppose it doesn’t help that I was away when it came out so I couldn’t promote it. Doh!
If you want to get it at a 15% discount this week, then head on over to http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/eBook88327.htm
Well, off to work for me… well… proofing Winter’s Kiss anyway… not office work! (yet)
I’ve been thinking this week about the whole submission process and the paths that authors take. I’m currently self-published and sell well for ebooks, with best selling books at Fictionwise and a loyal readership, but I don’t want to spend my whole life writing ebooks. I want to take the risk and the harder path to being published. I want to submit my stories to publishers and agents this year, and even if they’re rejected, I won’t mind, because I’ll be able to say that I tried. If you don’t try, you’ll never know if you might have succeeded, and who knows, I might succeed. So this year, I’m resolved to try to luck and take the leap. It’s a frightening one, because rejection will always hurt no matter how many times it happens. It’s something no one can ever become used to and emotionless about, not unless they’re a robot or not a human at all. But I want to do this, I want to see if I have a shot at being print published by a non e-publishing company, and want to see if I’m good enough.
I have been busy these past few weeks. I’ve finished the second draft of Arcadian and sent paperbacks out to a selected audience to get their feedback on the story before I start the polish/third draft. I’ve done the second draft of Heart of an Assassin, the fifth Daughters of Lyra story. I’ve proofed the first four Daughters of Lyra stories and got the first one ready for release as an ebook. And I’ve started the proof of Winter’s Kiss, which will be done by the end of next week.
On top of all that, I’ve been redesigning my website and rebuilding it. It’s much nicer now, although hasn’t been launched yet, and I can’t wait to show everyone. I think you’re all going to like it a lot more than my older website. It’s easier to find specific genres and the covers are bigger so you get a better view of them. I think it’s just easier to use all round and I love the little bits of functionality I’ve built into it, like scrollers and a countdown to the release of my next book!
And, I’ve also been thinking heavily about Ascension as I want to finish that this year and get it out to publishers and agents next year. It’s definitely going to become a novel, but a shorter one than Arcadian. Probably a 70,000 to 80,000 word one, which is the length most publishers are searching for.
I’m also about to start going through my small stack of notes for around 50 billion stories to find some novellas and shorts to write for next year. I have a mix of paranormal romance, science fiction, historical romance and romantic suspense to choose from. Should be interesting digging through the huge stacks and finding some gems to write.
Hi all! I’m so excited about releasing the Daughters of Lyra series after all the great comments on the covers. It was wonderful to hear which covers you guys preferred and which stories you were most looking forward too. My favourite is Heart of an Assassin. Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have a favourite but I do. It was the story that came to me after I had written the four stories that were originally going to make up the series. I just had to write it. I love the notion of a top assassin being in love with one of the princesses. I always love writing stories where the hero’s only weakness is the heroine. (In Heat, anyone?).
Speaking of stories where the heroine is the hero’s only weakness, I’ve finished my second draft of Arcadian and have made myself a print version via Lulu.com to test read the story again. It will be interesting to read it like a proper book. I’ll choose the six readers soon from the seventy (!!!) that submitted themselves to be readers. I’m flattered that so many people submitted their names. Unfortunately I can’t afford to send out 70 paperbacks of the novel. I’ll have to be subjective and choose people I have worked with before on my Ascension story.
Speaking of Ascension (there’s a lot of ‘speaking of’ today, isn’t there?), I’m finally getting close to being able to extend the story. I’m not sure how long the story will become or whether I will ebook publish it or send it out to agencies, but I am making headway on plotting out the extended version of the story. There is a lot that I think I need to cover. Things like the coven, the ascension itself, and counterbalances. Also, the hero needs to have his path realised–accepting that he is part-demon because it’s only the strength of his demonic side that gives him the power to protect and save the heroine.
I’m also getting back to thinking over a seven book series of novels that I want to write. I can’t really say much about it at this point but it’s urban fantasy / paranormal romance and you guys are sure to love it. I’ll only say that it’s seven books for seven very powerful and sexy brothers. Like Sons of Lyra on paranormal steroids. I can’t wait to begin writing it, but I’ve calculated that it’s going to take me around 2.5 to 3 years to get them all written and edited. That’s a long time without writing anything but the series!!! I’ll just refer to them as the Hades’ Boys for now.
I do need to go through my stacks of various notes for stories and see what shorter ones I can write for release as ebooks while I go off writing longer stories for print publishing. I’m sure I have plenty of paranormal novellas that I can write to keep you all happy 🙂
Better shoot. I have a lot to do today. Writing related and non-writing related. Things like summaries, mowing the lawn, and Japanese!
I have finally got around to making the covers for my upcoming Daughters of Lyra series. I’m quite pleased with them so I thought that I would share them with everyone and hopefully get you all a little excited about the series. The first book will be out in June, and then there’ll be one release a month until September. All of the stories are novella length this time, varying from around 19000 to 28000 words.
Released: 7th June 2009
Released: 5th July 2009
Released: 2nd August 2009
Released: 30th August 2009
Released: 27th September 2009
So, what do you all think of them?
I’m still working hard on Arcadian. I’m almost done with the second draft and then I’m going to be sending out paperback versions to a few lucky folk in the hope that their feedback will help me figure out if anything else needs to be changed, or whether it’s almost ready for sending out to agents.
I’ll leave you to look at the pretty covers…
Last week, I finally finally finished the second draft of Winter’s Kiss, the next Vampires Realm series novel. It’s a paranormal romance novel about a vampire of the Validus bloodline and a young newly turned female werewolf, who happens to be a girl he wanted for himself. I had a bit of trouble with the hero and his jumbled motivations, but I think we’re seeing things eye to eye now.
Winter, the hero, has his head on straight at last and it’s all stations go. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it was going to be and I didn’t actually have to change too much to get the story working how I wanted it. I had put off going through it for a few months because I thought it was going to be really difficult and painstaking, but in the end it was pretty painless!
Of course, it will need a good polish before it’s ready for releasing into the wild. I’m planning on releasing it this autumn along with another novel of mine that has been sitting around waiting for my attention to finally fall on it.
Heart of Winter, which was originally a free serial by the name of Of Blood & Snow, has gone through a second draft as well as the name change. I’m quite pleased with it and nothing substantial needs to change. This is probably because it was edited on the go while I was posting a chapter a week. I’m planning on releasing this one around the same time as Winter’s Kiss.
All this editing and writing Daughters of Lyra 5 has given me a good gap between finishing my first draft of Arcadian and starting the second draft. I’m printing it out right now and I’m finding it almost impossible to resist taking a peek at the odd chapter as I put more paper in or collect the sheets. I only have a little printer, so it only manages to print around 40 pages before I have to get under the desk and give it some more paper, as well as taking away the printed sheets. Poor printer. I hope it doesn’t run out of ink before it’s worked its way through the 350 a4 pages of Arcadian!
Oops… out of paper.
All fixed. Read another little bit. Terrible of me because I’ll spoil the effect of reading it through for the first time since writing it, but relieving too as the parts I have read are better than I had thought they would be.
I’ve spent the past few days preparing myself for this second draft – going through my books on editing, revision, etc, and even reading a new one called “How Not To Write a Novel” which was hilarious and I thank the gods that I haven’t made any of the mistakes in it. At least, I don’t think I have. I think I’m definitely guilty of some of them in my past stories though. Writing is a constant learning process but one that I’m happy to go through.
back to work for me. It’s never ending!
This week I completed the first draft of the fifth Daughters of Lyra story. Daughters of Lyra is a science fiction romance ebook series that I’m writing as a follow up to my best selling sci fi romance series Sons of Lyra. I expect to be ready to start releasing the ebooks in this series in May, which will be good as I began release the Sons of Lyra short stories in May last year.
I really like the story in this one, which is why I just had to write it and up the series from the original four books to five. I think everyone will like it and I’m really excited about releasing it later this year. I have to edit it now, but there’s other stories that will take precedence over it for now – such as the second draft of Winter’s Kiss and Arcadian. It’s always best to leave stories for around a month before attempting the second draft anyway.
Daughters of Lyra 5
25,179 / 25,179
25,179 / 25,179
There’s my tally. Quite a respectable one and about the length that I expected. All of the Daughters of Lyra stories are bettern 25000 and 30000 words. It’s a nice length to write. The Sons of Lyra series were all shorter, between 12000 and 18000. I wish I had made those longer now. Live and Learn!
I’ll post an update about Winter’s Kiss soon. I’m beginning the second draft of it tomorrow… looong editing days ahead of me to get the story right.
I’m currently writing the fifth story in my new sci-fi romance ebook series, Daughters of Lyra. The series is set after my science-fiction romance series, Sons of Lyra, and follows the daughters of those four princes of Lyra.
Originally there were going to be four stories in the Daughters of Lyra series of ebook novellas but I had an idea for a fifth story and loved it so much that I just had to write it too. I’m only 8000 words into the writing the first draft of the fifth story, but the other four stories are pretty much ready to go.
I’ll be releasing all five novellas in this sci-fi romance series this year, probably starting in May like I did with the Sons of Lyra stories, and ending September.
To celebrate the new series and to give you all a taste, I’m going to give you a brief run down of the stories and then ask you to comment with the name of the story you want an excerpt of most! (excuse any typos… in a rush!)
Daughters of Lyra 1
The first story in the series follows Sophia, daughter of the now King of Lyra, Sebastian (from Sons of Lyra: Runaway Hearts) and Terea, and her struggle against the never-ending row of suitors that her father has lined up for her. When the latest suitor turns out to be the emperor of Varka, a species known for their heartlessness and bloodlust, Sophia wants little to do with him… but his first attendant, Regis, Count of Sagres, makes her heart beat like no other man before him.
Daughters of Lyra 2
Miali, daughter of the now captain, Remi (from Sons of Lyra: Fight For Love) and Emmanuelle, is an ambassador of Lyra. Her true heritage is kept secret, but her beauty places her in danger when slavers attack her ship when she’s in cryo-sleep. When she comes around she finds herself a prisoner and bound for the markets, and her only company is the young Minervan doctor on the slaver vessel, Kosen. As they get to know each other, Kosen realises Miali’s secret and agrees to help her escape so they can rescue his two sisters who had been sold into slavery years before.
Daughters of Lyra 3
Renie, daughter of the now General Lyra II, Balt (from Sons of Lyra: Slave Princess) and Kayla, loves to explore space with her twin brother, Rezic. When they venture too close to the Black Zone, the barrier between Vegan space and the rest of the galaxy, things turn from exploration to adventure. Rezic is injured in a meteorite shower and Renie has no choice to accept help from a vessel in the Black Zone, even when it turns out to be Vegan. The commander immediately recognises her and her brother and they’re taken hostage, to be held for ransom. In the cells of the ship, Renie meets the most unsual looking man she’s ever seen… a man who seems willing to do anything to protect her… a man who makes her heart pound.
Daughters of Lyra 4
Lieutenant Amerii, daughter of the illustrious Captain Lyra III, Acer (from Sons of Lyra: Stranded) and Stella, wants nothing more than to prove herself to her captain and the imperial army without her father’s help… except for one thing. Van, Count of Aeris and commander of the first fleet of Varka. He’s been on her mind since she met him at her cousin Sophia’s wedding. Charged with the duty of meeting the Varkans at Varka Two, Amerii is pleasantly surprised when the commander of the Varkan vessel turns out to be Van, and he insists that she be the one to sign the contract between Varka and Lyra. When she meets him on his vessel, he’s more handsome than she remembered and she resolves to risk the violence of his bloodlust to make him hers.
Now just comment and scream for the excerpt you want most! The one with the most votes will win… and I’ll post it tomorrow night. You have until then to make yourself heard!!!
