About the Book

Marek (Guardians of Hades Paranormal Romance Series Book 4)
by Felicity Heaton
Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Earth, Marek was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai. Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence.

Haunted by a betrayal that shattered him and set him on a dark path of vengeance, Marek closely guards his heart, as determined to keep it safe as he is to wipe the scourge of vampires from the world.

Until a hunt lands him in the presence of a beautiful woman who threatens to steal that heart as she battles his sworn enemy, her graceful moves igniting a passion so fierce and hunger so deep it consumes him.

Caterina’s sole purpose for the last decade has been freeing her brother of the curse of being turned into a vampire. When an alluring dark warrior steps in to help her battle a nest of bloodsuckers, her entire life is tipped off balance. She knows deep in her heart the warrior can help her save her brother, but can she trust a man who is driven to slay every vampire he meets?

When Marek’s enemy emerges from the shadows, and Caterina is pulled down a dark rabbit hole into a dangerous world, will they be strong enough to overcome their pride and their prejudices or will a dark turn of events shatter both their hearts?

Excerpt

He had never been one for believing in signs, but as Marek watched the skull made of bubbles slide down the glass shower screen, a bad feeling stirred deep in his gut.

He finished scrubbing the suds from his hair and slicked it back, running both hands over his head as his eyes strayed back to the skull now stretching and deforming into something resembling Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream.

It meant nothing. Omens weren’t real.

If the bad feeling came from anywhere, it was because things had gone too quiet since the wraith had broken into the Tokyo mansion and rescued the shapeshifter female he and his brothers had managed to capture. It had looked as if she was going to be a valuable source of information, that Esher could break her down and convince her to talk if he had enough time.

Marek and his six brothers had held her in their grasp for only a few hours before the wraith had used the memories he had stolen from Esher to penetrate the barrier around the mansion and had whisked her away through a portal.

Now, they were back to square one. They had an enemy and they had no clue how many were in their ranks or what they planned to do next. All they knew was that this band of daemons wanted to destroy the gates he and his brothers protected between the mortal world and their home, the Underworld, to merge the two realms into one they would control.

Keras was still annoyed about the fact they had lost their only source of information, as well as other things.

Marek couldn’t remember the last time his oldest brother had said more than two words to him. At every meeting Marek attended, Keras spoke to the others about their reports and what he wanted them to do next, but when it came to Marek, all Keras dished out was the cold shoulder.

Marek cursed Enyo under his breath, not foolish enough to do it aloud in case the damned goddess of war was able to hear him. It was time she overcame whatever it was that stopped her from facing facts and his brother, before she ended up getting Marek killed. The next time she showed up on Marek’s doorstep, she was getting the cold shoulder treatment.

Or he would damn well teleport to wherever Keras was so she was forced to see his brother again.

It was about time they both faced their feelings.

Keras was as in denial as Enyo was.

The skull continued to mock him. Marek swiped the side of his left hand across the glass, obliterating it, and shut off the water. He didn’t believe in signs.

He made his own destiny.

The Moirai could tell him the future all they wanted, but what good were the seers when they couldn’t tell him the details? He and his brothers had been stuck in the mortal world for two hundred years thanks to the fates and their sketchy facts. Their father, Hades, had banished them from the Underworld to protect the gates and await the attack the fates had foreseen, believing it would motivate them and give them reason to focus all of their effort on their mission so they could return home.

Two centuries of waiting and the enemy had finally made themselves known.

War was coming.

Marek couldn’t wait.

His gut swirled with a dark hunger, one that had been steadily building over the last two weeks and pressed him to obey it. He flexed his fingers as his thoughts trod a dark path, feeding that hunger with images of beautiful carnage, of walls painted crimson, and blood rolling down his body as he stood amidst the aftermath of a battle.

The image wasn’t one he had witnessed, but one that was to come. Marek could tell the future too in his own way. He could predict the result of a hunt—because he always won. Nothing stood between him and the high of victory, not when he was hunting. His blood burned with need as his hunger got the better of him, and he stepped out of the shower, unable to deny it any longer.

Tonight.

He would make that vision real tonight.

He dried off and scrubbed a towel against his dark hair, mussing the waves into curls as he stared at himself in the mirror. He wasn’t surprised to find his normally brown eyes were black with the dark need to hunt, revealing the depth of his hunger.

He tried to keep his mind on other things as he tugged on his trunks and then his black combat trousers, and pulled on a tight black T-shirt, but his focus kept slipping, filling his head with pleasing images of fighting that roused another need in his veins, a trickle of pleasure that warmed him. His eyes slid shut as anticipation built, the thought of what was to come making him want to rush.

As always.

He clenched his fists, savoured the sting of his nails biting into his palms, and tamped down the urges, clawing back control. He would have his high soon enough. It was better he remained focused during the fight. Afterwards, when the twelve vermin he had been tracking for the last two weeks were little more than fizzing piles of flesh and bone, he could indulge himself and enjoy the bliss and satisfaction that came from killing them.

Vampires.

His father, Hades, would be angry with him if he discovered Marek’s need to slay vampires, a species his father viewed as allies. His brothers would probably be just as furious. Knowing that didn’t stop him. It couldn’t stop him.

The vampires needed to pay.

He had tried to deny the hunger to kill them, and it hadn’t ended well. The compulsion was strong, so powerful that it had driven him into his darker side—a side that came from Hades’s blood in his veins—and he had lost all control, becoming a slave to it.

His second-eldest brother, Ares, had found him a week later, caked with blood and grime. Apparently, he had located him by following the trail of carnage Marek had left in his wake. By his brother’s estimate, close to a thousand daemons had lost their lives to Marek’s blade, and on top of that he had slaughtered five Hellspawn.

Hellspawn were what he and his brothers called the daemon breeds that Hades deemed acceptable, ones who still served him and were allowed to travel freely between the mortal world and the Underworld.

Hades had forgiven him for killing them.

He doubted his father would forgive him if he became aware of the thousands of vampires he had slaughtered since then.

All of them in cold blood while fully aware of what he was doing.

Marek stalked into his bedroom, the terracotta tiles cool beneath his feet despite the thick heat of summer. Insects buzzed and chirruped outside, their song a soothing melody as he breathed deeply to focus, centring himself as he prepared for battle.

He felt the earth deep beneath him, sensed it surrounding him, and he closed his eyes as he allowed his connection to it to calm him further, and push out the frantic need building within him. Patience.

There were a dozen vampires in that nest in Barcelona, and he was going to butcher every single one of them.

Nothing was going to stop that from happening tonight.

He rounded his oak double bed that stood against the wall opposite the bathroom and opened a drawer on the side table to its right.

His dark gaze landed on the one thing it contained and the hunger roared back to life inside him.

He swallowed and reached into the drawer, his eyes slipping shut and pleasure rolling in on the wake of his hunger as his fingers made contact with the leather hilt of the blade. It was smooth beneath his touch, worn from centuries of use. He bit back a groan as he curled his fingers around it and lifted the blade, felt the delicious weight of it in his palm. He opened his eyes and looked down at it, shivered as he drew the curved knife from its sheath and the silver blade caught the low lights, reflecting them up at him.

The beauty of it hit him hard in the way it always did, had him transfixed as he took in every nick in the razor-sharp blade and recounted all the vampires he had killed with it, using the silver it contained to send them to their final deaths.

The need to hunt condensed inside him, boiled and raged, pushed at him until he surrendered to it. He swiftly sheathed the blade and jammed it into the waist of his fatigues, and focusing on his destination, he summoned his ability to teleport.

Darkness whirled around him, consumed him as he took a single step forwards. Familiar sensation washed through him, his connection to the Underworld lasting only a heartbeat before he emerged from the teleport. It was comforting nonetheless, and the closest he had been to home in two hundred years.

He landed in a cobbled alley surrounded by old cream stone buildings. The air was thicker here in Barcelona than in Seville, heavy with moisture that made it hard to breathe as the stifling heat bore down on him. He gave himself a moment to adjust to the summer temperatures, and then silently moved along the alley, using the shadows as cover as he stealthily approached the arched entrance of the vampire nest.

His senses sharpened as he focused them ahead of him, eager to count the number of foes awaiting him.

Only it wasn’t twelve signatures that popped up on his internal radar.

It was only five.

Marek cursed and moved faster, drawing his blade from its sheath at the same time. He could still eliminate these five, taking the edge off his hunger, and then he would wait for the rest to return. He reached the entrance of the building and stopped dead as the scent of spilled vampire blood hit him together with a feminine grunt and a hiss.

There hadn’t been any females among the vampires.

Was it a vampire?

Or a victim?

He eased the heavy wooden doors open and slipped inside. His eyes rapidly adjusted to the darkness that clung to the ground floor of the building, revealing the courtyard.

And a woman.

She stood in the centre of the courtyard, the low lights reflecting off her caramel-coloured hair as it tumbled around her shoulder, shifting in waves as she turned her head left and then right, eyeing the four male vampires moving to flank her. If it hadn’t been for the fact that she was facing off against the vampires, he would have thought her one of them with her tight dark clothing. She matched their style perfectly, calf-height black leather boots showing over her tight navy jeans and a form-fitting black tank revealing her toned figure.

A thin cut slashed up her left arm, a crimson trail from it reaching her elbow.

Darkness stirred inside him as she took in the vampires, her wide luminous hazel eyes bright with what looked a lot like fear.

A startling new urge blasted through Marek in response.

A need to protect her.

The dark-haired vampire facing her licked his fangs.

Not on Marek’s watch.

Darkness rushed through him, sweet and addictive, dangerously seductive as it subdued his softer emotions, leaving only raw rage and a black hunger for violence behind. His nails sharpened into claws, canines lengthening to match those the vampire was flashing at the woman.

His would-be victim.

Marek leaned his weight forwards and readied his blade, his gaze locking onto the male; mind racing to calculate everything about him, from his weight and height, to which foot he favoured and any possible weapons he had concealed on his body.

Satisfied that the vampire wouldn’t stand a chance, Marek pressed down on his right foot, intending to launch at the male.

Only the woman picked that moment to yell a battle cry and spin on her heel, a silver blur shining around her as she gracefully pirouetted.

And stabbed the vampire nearest Marek right through his heart with a short sword.

Marek rocked back on his heels.

She wasn’t a victim.

She was a warrior.

Breathtaking as she ducked beneath the blow from the blond male behind her and lashed out with her leg in a fluid sweep that looked as if she had performed it a thousand times. She caught the male’s ankles, toppling him, and spun back up to her full height as she brought her blade around.

It sliced clean through the throat of the vampire she had stabbed, cleaving his head from his body as he frantically clutched at the bubbling wound in his chest. The vampire slumped to land by what appeared to be the fizzing remains of another vampire, giving Marek a better view of the warrior as she took on the remaining three.

Part of Marek growled at him to intervene, to protect her as he had intended.

The rest of him was struck dumb by how gracefully she moved as she twisted and turned, blocked and attacked, undeterred by the way the vampires evaded her blows.

He had never seen anything like her.

It wasn’t fear that flashed in her hazel eyes as she spun on her heel and jammed her blade into the gut of the blond vampire. It was excitement. Pleasure. The same thrill he felt as he watched her.

Who was she?

The hunger that had gone dormant inside him the moment he had set eyes on her returned with a vengeance, snarling a black demand in his head as he watched her fighting the vampires.

Fighting his vampires.

It didn’t matter who she was. She was intruding on his battle, had ruined his plans for the night. These vermin were his to kill.

The woman slashed her blade across the leg of the blond vampire, cutting deep into his thigh through his black jeans, delivering another deadly blow of silver judging by how the vampire she had managed to kill was slowly melting away to nothing.

She leaned over and grasped the male by his hair, stared into his eyes as the silver consumed him, tearing pained hisses from between his clenched teeth as he convulsed.

Her first mistake.

A fatal one.

She had taken her eyes off the remaining two.

The tall dark-haired male grabbed her from behind, fisted her fall of caramel hair and pulled her head back, ripping a pained cry from her lips.

The vampire’s eyes blazed red as he bent his head to pierce her delicate neck with his filthy fangs.

Marek growled from the shadows, the feral snarl pealing from him before he could contain it as the need to protect her roared back to the fore, stealing control of him again.

The woman tensed.

The vampires froze.

Their glowing scarlet eyes edged towards him.

Marek launched at them on a roar.

Excerpt

To say he was buzzing as he waited for the petite mortal to speak would be the understatement of his long life.

Emelia was here, in his presence, more beautiful than he recalled. Fire had sparked in her emerald eyes from time to time when they had been talking. Talking. He knew the soft tones of her voice, the rolling way her words flowed, gaining strength at times and gentleness at others. He knew how emotions moved like tides within her, panic and fear at the helm one moment, and calm and resolve in command the next.

Her mood was as mercurial as his.

He hadn’t meant to scare her, and he definitely hadn’t handled her well so far. He had only meant to see her, to perhaps speak with her a little about everyday things, and now he was in danger of driving her away.

Fear still coloured those entrancing green eyes that were locked on him, and he would be a fool if he believed she had forgotten her desire to leave. She stood unmoving, a quiet strength to her as she assessed him, mulling over his offer, but he could read her. Part of her still wanted to flee back into the building where he couldn’t follow, not without stirring up the humans who lived in it again.

He didn’t want her to go, though.

There had to be something he could do to convince her to stay, to make her believe he had no intention of harming her.

He wasn’t sure what that was, though.

He had thought offering to track and slay the dragon for her would work, but now she looked even more as if she was considering walking away from him.

It had been a mistake to rush here to her, without taking a moment to plan. He had seen many people involved in relationships of every type, not just friendships or short-term partnerships. Angels indulged in more pleasurable forms of relationships, and some paired for life, as humans did. He had seen every kind of relationship in his years, but it hadn’t prepared him for handling Emelia.

He wasn’t sure what he was meant to do in this situation.

And damn, it was daunting.

He had expected to feel the same pressing need to fight when he had come to her, that same surge of rage and a hunger to hunt.

The moment he had heard her voice, a different sort of pressing need had filled him, and a wholly unexpected hunger had surged through him.

He should have left then.

But he had made his second mistake.

He had looked at her.

Her beauty hit him hard whenever he dared to glance at her, and it was difficult to take his eyes off her. The flawless cream of her skin against the rich brown of her hair. The elegant arch of her neck. The soft curve of her jaw. The delicate slope of her nose. The entrancing emerald of her large eyes.

The tempting soft pink of her full lips.

She fidgeted with the hem of her black T-shirt, her nerves clear.

His staring was unsettling her, but he couldn’t help himself.

His eyes didn’t want to leave her.

He wanted to drink his fill of her soft features, ached to drown in her eyes as she steadily held his gaze. His fingers twitched with a need to brush her damp hair back, to capture the band she had hastily tied it with and tug it free so he could tangle his fingers in her fall of dark hair.

He wasn’t sure what to do now, but he knew that wasn’t a wise move.

What was?

The bond that linked him to Emelia was fragile, and he could easily, accidentally, break it if he wasn’t careful. Just one misstep might be enough to end things before they ever really began, and part of him feared he had already made that wrong move.

He reined in his temper, clawing back calm, aware that the fear that gripped her now was his doing.

The air around them lightened, and as it did, he saw the fear in her eyes fading. A right move, then?

One that might bring him back to where he had been before he had let his anger get the better of him and pressed her too hard?

He hoped so.

He still wasn’t sure how to proceed, even if he was back to square one.

He was a warrior, a hunter. He didn’t know how to be gentle. He was governed by a darker set of instincts, and his temperament was hard to deal with at the best of times. At his worst, he was aware that he was a formidable male, one who might appear as a monster to the gentler sex.

Especially to a female like Emelia.

“What did you see?” She had barely spoken that question before she shook her head. “Don’t answer that. Maybe it’s better I don’t know. I don’t want to know.”

Mercurial female.

“Do you know where the dragon resides?” He wanted to move closer to her, but he didn’t dare risk it.

She tensed, her slender body going rigid, and looked away from him. “I don’t want to talk about it. I always have to talk about it, and I hate it.”

Understood. No talking about the dragon. Not yet anyway, not until she was more comfortable around him again.

“You saw it, though… didn’t you?” she whispered without looking at him.

“I did.” But he hadn’t seen it all.

Rage had been swift to claim him, and he had only seen part of what had happened to her. He wanted to know the rest. It plagued him as fiercely as the need to hunt the dragon.

“Is that a power all angels have?” She lowered her hands to her sides and he marvelled at how she visibly altered before his eyes, her nerves fading as she straightened and brought her gaze up to meet his.

“No. It is one of my gifts.” He had a few, not the most sought-after ones, but they had helped him in some tricky situations. Would they help him through this one?

He studied Emelia, charting the subtle changes in her body language and her emotions as she mulled over his answer. She seemed to grow stronger with each passing second, and he suspected it had to do with the fact she was shutting down her emotions. Fear. Nerves. Panic. It was all subsiding at a rapid rate as something else clicked into place.

He wanted to smile when it dawned on him.

The hunter in her.

Perhaps they weren’t so different after all.

The question was, was she using her duty as a hunter to merely learn more about him, or was learning about him an excuse to linger on the roof with him?

He wouldn’t deny her information either way. Her legion of mortals weren’t strong enough to detain him if he wanted to leave, and he wanted her to be more comfortable around him. If learning about him would grant her that comfort, would bring her closer to him, then he would answer any question she posed.

“One of the huntresses mentioned she had wanted to leave to find reinforcements… and then she had wanted to stay.” Emelia held his gaze, hers impassive as she studied him, but he could see beyond the veil to her rising nerves. Whatever she wanted to ask, it unsettled her for some reason. “Sable told me you can control weak-minded people—”

She cut herself off when he frowned at her.

Sable was more trouble than he had realised. She had been poisoning Emelia’s mind.

“I cannot manipulate you.” He barely dulled the sharp edge to his tone. “You are too strong.”

That seemed to relieve her.

A sharp sensation shot down his spine. Not now. He gritted his teeth and ignored the summons from his superiors. They could wait. He didn’t want to leave her.

“What’s wrong?” Her dark eyebrows knitted and he realised he wasn’t the only one who could see through someone to the real them.

She could read him too.

“A summons,” he muttered. “It can wait.”

She tilted her head back and her eyes traced across the night sky. “Won’t you get into trouble?”

Was she looking for Heaven? She wouldn’t find it there. As Hell was linked to this plane, so was his. It was above her world, but not. She had been to Hell, so he presumed she knew it was a different plane, another dimension in simple terms.

She lowered her gaze back to him. “You should go.”

He shrugged. “I do not want to.”

The corners of her lips curled, but the smile died before it could manifest. “You’ll get in trouble.”

He had the feeling he had been in trouble from the moment he had met her. “No worse than usual.”

He ignored so many summons that his superiors had once joked about fitting him with a GPS anklet because it appeared he kept getting lost and someone had to keep finding him.

“Go.” She looked ready to shove him.

He didn’t like that at all. Now she wanted him to leave? Had he outstayed his welcome or done something wrong? He really needed to read up on relationships, or at least on females. He was finding it hard to fathom what she wanted when she kept changing her mind.

“You were asking me questions, though.” And he had been enjoying it. “If I leave, will you permit me to return another day? I would speak with you again if you would allow it.”

She stifled a smile that was at odds with the nerves he felt rising inside her.

“You’re so formal…” A frown wrinkled her button nose. “What am I meant to call you? It’s weird I don’t know what to call you.”

Not really.

“You may call me Fourth Commander.”

She pulled a face at that and it was his turn to frown at her.

“I can’t call you a title. Is a title who you are?” She seemed to have forgotten the nerves he had stirred in her by asking to see her again, although he wasn’t sure he was glad of it, as she now appeared determined to make him question himself.

Was a title who he was? A title was enough for him. It was more than many angels bore.

“Everything has a name,” she said. “Hell, my childhood pets had names. I named the damned spiders in the garden too.”

“It is all I require,” he countered, his mood taking a dark turn as he considered what she had said.

She had given wild arachnids names and he didn’t have one to offer her. Did that mean she would see him as something less than a common garden spider?

“You really should have a name. It’s stupid… not having a name. Sable is right about that.” Her eyes lit up. “I could call you what Sable did, although I imagine you wouldn’t like it.”

He glared at her now. He remembered what the half-breed had called him.

Tall, Dark and Pompous.

“I would rather you did not.” He folded his arms across his chest and grimaced as the wound on his side pulled. She glanced down at the spot above his hip and looked as if she might ask about it, so he continued. “Do I really require a name? Is it not something you can overcome?”

She shook her head, his wound forgotten. “It’s just strange. Maybe I could grow used to it, if you insisted on having no name.”

Was she planning to see him enough to grow used to things about him?

Heat spread through him at the thought and he took it as a sign she did want to see him again, would allow him to visit her another time, and perhaps more than once. If he visited her enough, he might come to understand her, and she might open up enough to tell him more about the dragon.

Then he could hunt the bastard down and slay him.

“Your eyes are shifting again and it’s cold. I’d rather you kept your temper in check.” Her soft words tugged him back from his pleasant thoughts and he reined his mood in before it slipped beyond his control. Another frown put a furrow in her brow. “I don’t like it when you lose your temper. It’s cold and dark…”

He didn’t like the way she trailed off, or how she wrapped her arms around her waist to tightly hug herself as if she feared she was falling apart.

“I apologise.” He bowed his head.

“No problem, TeeDeePee.”

He arched an eyebrow at her. “TeeDeePee?”

“Short for Tall, Dark and Pompous.”

If she wanted him to keep his mood in check, she was going about it the wrong way.

“Fourth Commander,” he said.

“EffSee.” She pulled a face. “Echelon?”

She was determined to give him a name. It wasn’t going to happen.

He huffed. “Do you like your name? Do you feel it suits you?”

A little shrug. “I like it. Sometimes people can’t spell it. I can’t tell you how many Starbucks I’ve had where they’ve called me Amelia. Sometimes people try to shorten it.”

The flicker of disgust in her green eyes said that didn’t go down well with her.

“Shorten it?” He tried to think of ways to shorten her name, none of which he would tell her, because he was enjoying this easy banter.

She was slowly relaxing again and had forgotten he was meant to be leaving, both of which were good things.

She nodded. “Mostly to Em.”

“Em.” He liked that. It had a cute ring to it, the sort of name a lover might whisper in her ear.

The look in her eyes said she hated it, though.

He looked himself over, from his black leather shoes, up his trousers, to his turtleneck sweater.

What name would suit him?

He lifted his eyes to lock with hers and that heat flooded him again, stirring hungers best denied, ones that were new and startlingly powerful.

“Your eyes are shifting again,” she murmured, a little breathless, her voice softer than before, barely there as she stared deep into his eyes, as if he had cast a spell on her. “You look like a wolf.”

“I am an angel,” he countered, a little too deadpan judging by how the corners of her lips tilted in that teasing way he had never seen before tonight.

“I know that, but you keep looking at me like a predator.” Her voice dropped lower, but he still heard her. “As if you want to devour me.”

He did, but not in the way she meant it.

She took a step back and he barely stopped himself from moving one towards her. It was hard, but he let her distance herself and dragged his gaze away from her, fixing it back on the stars so he was no longer unsettling her. He needed to handle her carefully. Gently. How did one go about that?

“Why do you want to fight the dragon?” Her words drifted around him as he focused on the stars.

“I simply want justice served to him.” A lie.

“Other huntresses were taken… hurt worse than me. Some were killed. Do you want to avenge them too?”

He picked out one star and fixated on it. It was brighter than the others, flashed blue and gold. “After I have dealt with your dragon.”

“He isn’t my dragon,” she snapped and he had the feeling he had hit a raw nerve.

“My apologies,” he murmured, distracted by the star. Was it a binary? Two stars snared in an orbit that had them crossing paths at intervals. He knew how that felt now. How long would it be before he could cross paths with Emelia again?

The fire arcing down his spine said it might be a while if he didn’t return to his superiors soon to see what they wanted. He had been confined to Echelon headquarters for a lunar cycle once, his punishment for what they had termed his ‘disobedience’. That time, they hadn’t been joking.

A lunar cycle locked away from Emelia, only able to watch her from afar, would be torture now he knew the sound of her voice, the sweet scent of her perfume, and had been close to her.

“So you want to kill him just because he hurt a human?” Her voice gained strength and her mood shifted, darker emotions surfacing.

She didn’t believe him.

“I am an angel.” An excuse, and a good one as far as he could tell.

Mortals believed angels watched over them, protecting them from afar, and he was sure that by now, she knew that he was a demon hunter like her, tracked and killed any creature who was a danger to her kind.

It was possible she would believe him.

“I don’t buy it,” she bit out.

Perhaps not, then.

She moved a step closer and his senses lit up, that heat she caused inside him rising another ten degrees, until he was burning with a need to look at her again and see how near to him she was.

Until he was on fire with the hunger to reach out, slide his arm around her narrow waist, and draw her against him.

He forced his eyes to remain on the stars, because she could read him, and he didn’t want her to know the real reason he needed to kill the dragon.

He was unequipped to deal with her, uneducated in the ways of relationships, but he was old enough and wise enough to know that telling her he desired to slay the dragon because it had harmed her and that he would kill anyone who had done such a thing to her, including another angel, would only end with her leaving and never wanting to see him again.

Which was hardly surprising, but also unfair.

He wasn’t sure he had much control when it came to Emelia. The anger that had awoken in him when he had seen through her eyes the things the dragon had done to her, the torment she had suffered, was too powerful to wrestle into submission. He needed to do this for her, could only keep denying the deep and consuming hunger to hunt and destroy the dragon for so long before it devoured what little control he had and he found himself traversing the distance between this world and a place that was forbidden.

Hell.

He would go there, whether she wanted it or not. Whether he wanted it or not. He had to go. The dragon was there, and he wouldn’t be able to settle until he knew the male was dead and would never harm Emelia again.

All he could do was prepare himself for that day as best he could, and that meant learning as much as possible about the dragon, which meant convincing Emelia to confide in him and trust him to carry out this task for her.

“What do you think will happen if you kill Zephyr?” she husked in a tight voice, one that cracked on that bastard’s name.

Zephyr.

He had a lead at last, but at what cost?

Tears lined Emelia’s dark lashes and she turned her face away from him. Her shoulders shook as she closed her eyes, and he ached to reach for her, to lay his hand gently on her cheek and reassure her that whatever nightmare she had survived, it would never happen to her again.

Lukas was looking worse for wear.

Annelie had never seen him drink alcohol. She had often wondered why he came to her pub but stuck to soft drinks. Seeing him slowly sliding down towards the wooden bar, his head propped up on his hand and his eyes closed, she was no longer surprised that he lay off the booze.

He couldn’t handle it.

His scruffy sandy locks fell forwards when his head slipped from his hand and he jerked up.

He rolled his eyes a few times while blinking and then pulled a face as he inspected the damp elbow of his black shirt and the wet bar where he had been leaning.

A sigh lifted his broad shoulders and his green eyes shifted to the half-full glass of whisky in front of him, growing a little unfocused as he stared at it. He turned it on the bar, canting his head to his left as he studied it. The soft lighting above him reflected off the glass, casting patterns over the dark wood, and his gaze went from unfocused to hazy. Either he was lost in thought, or the whisky was really taking its toll on him.

Perhaps she should have cut him off after his third, but his charming smile had persuaded her to supply him with a fourth, and a fifth. She regretted it now, her stomach squirming whenever she looked at him and saw the effect of the alcohol on him.

At the time, he had looked as though he would be fine.

Now, he looked as though he was going to pass out.

Heck, maybe she shouldn’t have given him the first shot.

What if he didn’t drink because he was an alcoholic and she had just ruined his recovery?

She would never be able to live with herself if that was the case.

She handed some change to a patron and walked along the length of the area behind the bar to Lukas, neatening her appearance as she did so, a nervous habit she couldn’t quite get under control whenever she was heading in his direction.

Her heart rate jacked up as she tugged the hem of her black baby-doll t-shirt down to sit smoothly along the waist of her black jeans and combed her fingers through her long red hair. She always felt as though she looked like a mess whenever things got frantic behind the bar.

And she wanted to look her best for Lukas.

She had been deeply aware of her appearance from the moment she had first set eyes on him, felt self-conscious whenever his eyes landed on her, and ached for them to return to her whenever he looked away.

Did he know how badly he affected her?

Did she affect him at all? Continue reading

The images in the bright pool flickered past Apollyon’s eyes at lightning speed but he could see them all, could bring each into focus and pause there a moment to understand what was happening in the scene before discarding it and allowing the flow to resume. It was a distraction he used daily, his every hour devoted to watching over the mortals.

In the long centuries he had studied the human world, he had seen a million or more changes, from the smallest accidental discovery to the grandest scheme that had altered the future of the race.

He had witnessed the growth of the mortals.

He had watched them forget his kind.

No one believed in angels anymore.

And his master had not called him forth from the bottomless pit in Hell in all the time he had been assigned to the dark realm of smoke and fire, hundreds of years passed choking on the stench of sulphur and bearing the presence of demons, and the king of Hell’s vicious taunts that rang in his ears on a daily basis.

Yet Apollyon waited for the call to come, faithful and patient, committed to his duty even as others around him chose to live by their own commands. He had heard the tales from angels who had reason to enter Hell, whispers and rumours about how their fellow warriors had softened and fallen for mortal women, their devotion wavering and their commitment altering to their love.

He would do no such thing.

He had no interest in mortals. Continue reading

Excerpt

“Manners much?” she muttered, his sensitive hearing easily picking up her soft voice.

Rath glared at the grass, a need to turn and tell her that he had manners pounding through him, but she would only ask where they were, and he didn’t have an answer for that question. He wasn’t sure where they had gone.

They had disappeared the moment he had set eyes on her by the river, the second she had lowered her camera and her eyes had met his, and something had happened. He just wasn’t sure what that something was. It had him tied in knots, snapping at her when he felt guilty about it a split-second later, unsure what the fuck was wrong with him.

He led her to the river, positioned himself on a log beneath a tree on the right side of the grassy area, and leaned back against the broad trunk of the pine.

Watching her.

She lifted the camera to her face and swung it in all directions, diligently keeping it away from him. The morning mist curled playfully around her boots as she did whatever the fuck she was doing. He had never taken a picture in his life, had no clue what she was looking for through the lens. Whatever it was, she seemed to find it when she moved to the other side of the grass, to the trees near the cabin there, and hunkered down, going incredibly still.

Rath tried to do the same, but his right leg twitched and he tapped his fingers on his knee as he watched her.

Couldn’t keep his damned eyes off her.

She stayed perfectly still for close to an hour, and then stood and lowered the camera to her hip. She raised her arms above her head and stretched, pushing her breasts outwards, pulling her thick jacket tight across them.

His cougar side growled at the vision of her, growing restless as he studied her, and he tapped his knee harder. When she turned his way, lowering her arms, he averted his gaze, locking it on the river. The sun was rising higher, clearing the mist now. He basked in it, letting the warmth wash over him and soak into his dark clothing, and distract him from her as it roused his love of lazing in the sunshine.

It wouldn’t be long before summer rolled in.

Gods, the thought of long days spent stretched out in the sunshine had him aching for it to roll around quicker.

He wouldn’t say no to skipping spring, didn’t need the damned headache of a gathering wrecking his year.

“It’s beautiful here.” Ivy’s soft voice coming from close to him had him whipping his head towards her. She smiled down at him. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

She hadn’t. Much.

Her hazel eyes sparkled and he could see in them that she had meant her words, and she thought his valley was beautiful. It was, and it was probably even more beautiful to someone like her, who had likely come from a city life.

She moved away again, snapped a few photographs and looked at each one. Trying out angles?

He tensed when she moved closer to him, and his gaze tracked her as she passed him, stopping only a metre from him. Her fine dark eyebrows pinched, her shell-pink lips pursing. He was about to ask her what was wrong when she lifted the camera and took another shot. Her eyes lit up when she angled the camera away from her and looked down at it. Happy with the picture?

She crouched again, resting her elbows on her knees, her camera clutched in both hands, ready to lift into place.

He tried to keep still for her, but no matter what he did, he couldn’t stop himself from tapping at his leg as he watched her, the energy coursing through him too much to contain.

Another hour passed, and the mist cleared, and he caught the disappointment in her eyes as she gazed at the river, the sparkle that had been in them dying as she rose back onto her feet and lowered her camera. Her shoulders lifted in a long sigh.

“The bears won’t be coming today,” he said, and she looked at him, the flare of disappointment in her hazel gaze growing brighter as she locked eyes with him.

“Do they really come?” She scanned the river, and the woods on the other side, a look of longing on her pretty face.

Rath nodded. “Sometimes. Something must have spooked them today.”

Him.

He was restless around her. The bears were probably picking up on it and steering clear of the creek.

He should have watched her from the cabin instead, keeping his distance so the bears would show up. He wasn’t sure why he had come with her, had positioned himself in the open, and hadn’t hung back so she could get her photographs.

And go.

A growl curled through him at that thought, his animal instincts rebelling against it in a way that left him cold as something hit him.

His cougar side wanted her.

He wanted her.

It wasn’t going to happen. She was human, a complication, and he wasn’t looking for a female. He didn’t need one in his life.

“Can I stay a little longer?” She fidgeted with her camera, her eyes fixed on it, but they nervously flitted to him when he looked at her. “I drove for days to get here, and then trekked for almost two days, and camped in the woods overnight. I swear, I’ll move on in the morning.”

Rath frowned at the way she said that, making it sound as if she was talking about doing something other than marching her backside to her vehicle.

“Move on where?” He sat up now, a feeling stirring inside him, one he didn’t like.

She looked up river, towards the mountains and the glacier. “This is definitely bear country, and I’m sure I can find some.”

He growled inside at that, his cougar side clawing at his skin, pushing for freedom, the thought of her out there in that wilderness, alone and vulnerable, rousing it and instincts long forgotten—a deep need to protect.

He shoved onto his feet, moving so fast she startled and gasped, and loomed over her, so close to her that she had to tip her head back to keep her eyes on his face.

“I thought we’d been through this?” he snapped. “It’s dangerous that way. You might end up hurt.”

“Attacked?” She swallowed hard and her golden skin paled. “Do you see cougars around here?”

Rath smiled wryly. “All the time.”

“Really?” Her hazel eyes widened and darted around, and he swore her cheeks paled further. “I know how to handle bears, but cougars…”

“It’s not the cougars who will hurt you.” He moved a step closer, just a few inches, but enough that he could feel her heat, drowned in the scent of her, and his damned cougar side stopped frantically clawing at his skull, pushing him to shift and force her to remain. “It’s the grizzlies. It’s grizzly country up that way.”

He was talking shifters, ones liable to attack her on sight, or worse, capture her and keep her.

He looked at Cougar Creek and huffed.

Although, it was a fucking awful time for her to stumble onto his land too.

It wouldn’t be long before the males started gathering, and any available female in the vicinity, even a human female, would provoke their instincts to fight for dominance so they could mate with her.

Soon, she would be in as much danger here as she would be if he let her go upstream towards the glacier and the bear shifter pack that called that area of the valley home.

He dropped his eyes to her and stared at her as she looked at her surroundings.

For the first time in three decades, desire stirred in his chest, tore through his muscles and flowed through his veins, and had his cougar side shifting beneath his skin, hungry for a female.

Hungry for her.

Scratch soon.

She had been in dangerous waters from the moment he had set eyes on her.

Her hazel eyes slowly lifted to his, enormous now as she looked at him, but they were dark too, her dilated pupils and her scent revealing the emotions that flowed through her.

Desire. Need.

They called to him, and damn, part of him wanted to answer.

Her eyes darted away from him, and her voice trembled as she spoke. “I… uh… didn’t see these cabins on any maps.”

“They’re all hidden by the trees.” Was that his voice, so rough and deep, strained and raw? He tried to tear his eyes away from her, but couldn’t, was powerless against her pull as her scent curled around him, her beauty branded itself on him, and her soft curves inflamed him.

A blush climbed her cheeks. “There’s a lot of cabins. Do you run a business here? Like vacation rentals?”

Was she thinking of checking in? Fuck, he probably wouldn’t turn her away, even when he knew he should.

“They’re all family cabins. I just look after them.” He mustered the strength to rip his focus from her and pinned it on the cabin nearest the river. The sight of it acted as a bucket of ice down his crotch, instantly cooling him off as he remembered that the family who owned it were coming soon, and so was his brother, and then most of the eligible pride males would hit the creek. “I’m meant to be refurbishing one.”

“I’m sorry. I’m getting in your way.” She glanced at the cabin and then back at him, and he resisted looking at her, felt her frown and sensed the shift in her emotions, darker ones emerging. His coldness had upset her, and damn, she was quick to bring up a wall around herself and hit him with the same cold front he was showing her. “I’ll just get my things and go.”

It was for the best.

But he found himself lunging for her, seizing her wrist as his heart froze in his chest, the thought of her leaving propelling him into action before he could think about what he was doing.

She looked down at his hand on her arm.

“You can stay one night.” Fuck, he was going to regret this, he knew it, but for some damned reason he couldn’t bring himself to let her go just yet. “You can’t photograph anything that might give away the location, or me… or any of the cabins. You have to stick to the river and the wildlife, and do not wander out of the boundary of the village.”

That seemed to scare her, and her eyes leaped to the mountains, her pulse picking up in his ears as she stared at them.

When she finally looked back at him, that pulse kicked faster, echoing in his own chest as she smiled at him, one that reached her stunning eyes.

“Thank you,” she murmured, and then added with a frown, “I just realised I never got your name.”

“Rath,” he uttered, falling under her spell again, feeling a little hazy from head to toe as his cougar side purred at her, had him wanting to rub against her to mark her with his scent.

To make her his.

She tipped her head back, looked deep into his eyes, and rocked his entire world on its axis with three innocent words.

“Thank you, Rath.”

Esher (Guardians of Hades Paranormal Romance Series Book 3) by Felicity Heaton – Cover Reveal

About the Book

Esher (Guardians of Hades Series Book 3)
Felicity Heaton
Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Water, Esher was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.

Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence. Tormented by his past, Esher burns with hatred towards mortals and bears a grudge against Hades for forcing him into their world, condemning him to a life of battling to keep a fragile hold on his darker side—a side that wants to kill every human in the name of revenge.

Until he finds himself stepping in to save a female—a beautiful mortal filled with light and laughter who draws him to her as fiercely as the pull of the moon, stirring conflict in his heart and rousing dangerous needs long forgotten.

Aiko knows from the moment she sets eyes on the black-haired warrior that he is no ordinary man, just as she’s no ordinary woman. Blessed with a gift, she can see through his stormy façade to the powerful god beneath, and the pain and darkness that beats inside him—pain she grows determined to heal as she falls deeper under his spell and into his world.

When the daemon bent on turning Esher against his brothers makes her move, will Esher find the strength to overcome his past and fulfil his duty, or will the lure of revenge allow the darkness in his heart to seize control, transforming him into a god intent on destroying the world?

Excerpt

Esher drew his hand away from his right side and frowned at the blood coating his palm. It caught the light of the narrow signs that jutted out from each building, running their entire height to mark what was on each floor, and reflected white, red and yellow back at him.

The wound would heal rapidly, not like the wraith wound, but he would have to conserve his strength until it had knitted back together, which meant he couldn’t teleport home. Stepping, as he and his brothers called it, would drain him, and it was only just gone one in the morning, meaning there were still another four or five hours of darkness in which another daemon could attempt to find the gate.

Or a Hellspawn, one of the accepted species in his father’s eyes and one allowed to enter the Underworld via the gates, could call on him to open it.

So, he would have to do the unthinkable.

Public transport.

He ground his molars and reached into the breast pocket of his shirt, tugged the tiny headphones out and jammed them into his ears. Instantly, the soothing melody of Bach filled him, swamping the song of the rain and the grating noise of Tokyo.

Esher took a few deep breaths, giving the beautiful classical piece time to do its work, and then trudged forwards, past the two dead daemons. He didn’t look at the dead mortal as he passed the male, kept moving onwards on auto-pilot, slowly constructing a wall of calm inside himself, a barrier that would shut the world out and allow him to venture down into the train station and tolerate the presence of the mortals as they surrounded him.

Crowded him.

As the strings rose, he spotted the airplane-wing canopy that stretched above the central entrance of Tokyo station, extending from the glass skyscraper to its right. Clouds swirled around the top of the towering structure, glowing yellow from the city lights. The rain continued to pour, soothing Esher as much as the music, but as he approached the entrance and the number of mortals rose, hurrying to catch the last trains, his grip on calm began to weaken.

He could do this.

He balled his right hand into a fist, and grimaced as the cut across his forearm stung as his muscles flexed beneath it, a flash of fire that tested him. He breathed deep, letting the flare of irritation fade without affecting his mood.

He was calm. In control.

Calm. Control.

Esher breathed through it, steeled himself and moved forwards, avoiding the busier paths into the building.

It was only a short trip. Barely fifteen minutes. He could do this.

A mortal female passed close to him and he tensed, his breath seizing in his throat as he leaned to avoid her even though she was more than ten feet away.

Breathe.

Calm. Control.

Keras would fucking kill him if he lost his shit and caused a bloodbath. His oldest brother had lectured him more than once about playing nice around the weak little mortals. By the gods, he tried. He could almost tolerate them now. He had even managed to speak with some when he was feeling strong, able to cope with breathing the same air as them.

But he wasn’t feeling strong.

The coppery odour of blood clouded his senses, tugging at his memories, and it was hard to keep them shut out, to hold the wall of calm in place.

He shoved the bloodied fingers of his right hand through the longer lengths of his black hair, pushing the damp strands out of his face, and scrubbed at the shorter sides.

He could do this.

He took another step towards the building, a pressing sense of urgency building inside him and driving him to move as he picked up the warning over the public-address system. It was last train time.

Now or never.

He froze as a male passed him, flicking a glance his way that turned into a double-take before he pivoted on his heel and hurried away from the station.

Esher touched his face, drew his hand away and looked at his fingers. Black smeared their pads. Daemon blood.

He huffed, grabbed the handkerchief he always kept in the back pocket of his dark blue jeans and wiped the blood away, scrubbing his neck and face, and then his hand to clear it of both daemon and his own blood.

It took barely a second for the blood to roll back down to his fingers. He buttoned his coat to hide the crimson stain on his shirt, tugged the sleeve back and wrapped the handkerchief around his forearm, covering the wound there. It would have to do.

The last of the mortals ran into the building ahead of him.

Esher strode towards it, his left hand closing over his right side again as the wound below his ribs burned. He pressed hard against it, stopping the flow of blood down his side, and trudged forwards, moving as quickly as he could manage.

The lights inside the station stung his eyes and he lowered his head, letting the hand-length ribbons of his black hair fall forwards over his brow to shield them. He kept his head bent as he hurried past the closed shops towards the Yamanote Line. It would stop at Yoyogi Park and he could walk from there. The streets in that neighbourhood would be quiet.

Unlike the immense room around him.

Someone almost ran into him as they rushed towards the ticket barriers, and he bared his teeth at their back. Keras would have to forgive him if someone bumped him, because he wasn’t sure he had the strength to stop himself from hurting them.

It was leaking from him as he passed his bloodied right hand over the card reader on the barrier, using his abilities to force it to open for him. It swung open and he passed through, scanned the area ahead of him and spotted the sign for the line. It was further than he remembered. He was going to have to use a little bit of power to make it to the train.

Not stepping. Just running.

He clutched his side and sprinted, passing the mortals with ease, and reached the platform just as the last train pulled in. He boarded at the first door, and moved down through the carriages until he found one that was quiet.

The seats near the next car were empty, so he slumped into them, arranging himself in a way that put off the mortals who were eyeing the spot beside him. He looked at his bloodied hand, felt a few mortals glancing there too, and then moving away. He was tempted to wipe it on his jacket, but since it was acting as a nice deterrent, he kept it on show. Another barrier to keep the mortals at bay.

He couldn’t believe he had been reduced to using public transport. He eyed a few of the humans, issuing glares to the braver ones who looked as if they might chance it and sit beside him on the three-seater bench. Wretched creatures. The wall of calm cracked a little, and he drew in a deep breath. Mistake. His right ribs protested, a sharp pain echoing along them from the wound, worsening his mood and adding a few more cracks to the wall.

He closed his eyes as the train pulled away, meaning to shut out the crowded carriage so he could claw back the calm.

Not meaning to fall asleep.

He woke with a jolt as the train rounded a bend, and his black eyebrows pinched in a frown as he swept his blue gaze around the carriage. It was almost empty.

“Fuck,” he muttered and peered out of the window, trying to see where he was as he silently berated himself for succumbing to sleep around so many humans. They weren’t to be trusted. Fuck knew how many of them might have taken the opportunity to kill him if they had known what he was.

Building after building whizzed past outside, none of them standing out to him. The damned city looked the same no matter where he went in it. He rubbed his tired eyes and squinted at the display screen above the doors. Broken. Just his luck.

Had he missed his stop?

He looked at the two people in his carriage, assessing them, and then squeezed his hand over his side as he leaned forwards and looked to his left, into the next one. Five people in that one, none of them a threat.

He leaned back into the padded seat.

A shriek rose from his left.

Esher edged forwards again and glared into the next carriage. A petite raven-haired female with bunches and a fringe that cut a straight line above her eyebrows swatted at a male with her black backpack. Her thick-soled patent leather shoes skidded on the floor of the car as she swung again, causing her short black dress to rise up and reveal the tops of her stripy black and white stockings.

A little Lolita with a vicious streak.

Or a terrified little Lolita.

He canted his head, trying to figure out which one it was, and growing increasingly annoyed and disgusted with everyone in her carriage as they all pretended not to notice her plight.

“Chikan!” Pervert.

A public transport one in particular.

The male grabbed her again, snapping his hand tight around her delicate wrist.

Still no one moved to help her.

Why the fuck was he forced to protect a people who cared nothing about their own kind? No Hellspawn or god would tolerate this female’s cries.

She battered the male again, but the bastard pulled her towards him, undeterred.

Esher growled and shoved to his feet, not pausing to consider what he was about to do.

He was going to save a human for the first time in his life.

This week, I had the task of posing questions to Ares, one of the seven strapping sons of Hades in my Guardians of Hades series. You can read Ares’s romance in Ares.
