ASSASSIN’S TOUCH by Laurie London

As they rode along in silence, Neyla was grateful she’d ridden a lot as a girl. Using only her legs, she could easily maintain her seat and balance behind him without having to hold on to his waist—because, if she were honest with herself, the less physical contact she had with him, the better.

Rickert seemed strangely subdued. At least on the way to Rosamund’s, he’d told her to watch her step and guided her around various obstacles in her way. Now that they were riding, he was all but silent.

“Duag is a beautiful animal,” she said to break the quiet. “You keep him with Rosamund when you’re…on our side?”

“Yes, and I keep her and her daughters supplied with Vengold silk from my travels.”

Ah, so the fabric was a type of silk. “Do all the women here dress like that?”

He shrugged. “Some do. Others wear dresses. Fewer wear pants.”

“Why? Is it forbidden?” In a male-dominated society, it shouldn’t surprise her that women were forced to wear dresses or saris to cover their legs. If a woman exposed them, they probably assumed she was a whore.

He glanced over his shoulder at her and frowned. “We have no rules like that. I think they prefer to dress that way.”

“So if I walked through your streets wearing shorts and a tank top, I wouldn’t be jailed… or pulled into a dark corner and raped?”

Reining Duag to a halt, he turned in the saddle to stare at her. Up this close, she couldn’t help breathing in the herbal soap smell of his sun-warmed skin. “We have our customs, Agent Trihorn, just like you do over there, but violence against women is never acceptable. However, I suspect the punishment we mete out for such crimes is much more final.”

He wasn’t quite angry with her, she decided. It was more like…disappointment or hurt. She suddenly felt myopic and foolish, aware that she was judging his world—perhaps too harshly—through her own limited lens.

“I’m…sorry. That was unfair of me.”

A tiny muscle in his jaw flexed. “Clearly, you’ve got a biased view of me and my people.”

As she stared down at her hands, she knew he was right. She’d never bothered to learn anything about them other than what she’d gathered from scattered news reports and army briefings. Occasionally, the tabloids would have a story about someone crossing over, but there were some in her world who didn’t even believe the portals existed. She recalled a well-known evangelist who publicly stated he wanted to save the barbarians, so he prayed for a portal to be shown to him. As far as she knew, it had never happened, because he was soon preaching about how the portals and the Barrowlands weren’t real. They were merely the unholy inventions of a society in moral decline that was fixated on false prophets and the supernatural.

“Yes, I guess that’s true,” she admitted.

He was quiet for a moment, contemplating what she’d just said. “But I’m sure I’m just as guilty of judging you.” The way he said it made it sound so personal, as if the rift between their worlds boiled down to just the two of them.

It was easier to be angry with him for being part of the enemy as a whole. It was less easy to be upset with him, the man. After all, he had saved her from Smythe and had shown remarkable concern for her welfare. He’d even given her the package from Rosamund, explaining that it was a poultice of herbs to help with the bruising.

The saddle leather squeaked as he shifted slightly, and she assumed he was about to turn around. Instead, he reached back and carefully moved a strand of hair from her face without touching her skin. Only when his gaze dropped to her mouth did she realize she’d licked her lips, drawing his attention.

“My little soldier, what am I to do with you?”

The air around them seemed to crackle. She was suddenly hot under the thin tunic. Could she be reading him right? Was he going to kiss her? Should she lean forward a couple of inches and kiss him first? She wondered what he’d taste like, how his skin would smell if she were that close. Would his short stubble prickle against her lips?

Duag stomped an impatient foot and snorted, effectively breaking the spell.

The corner of Rickert’s mouth twisted. “I suppose if it were me walking down your streets wearing my leather kilt, I’d draw a few stares too.”

She laughed at the visual, relieved on some level that whatever had just happened between them was over.

“Yeah, from every woman with a set of eyeballs.” She remembered his bare, muscular chest. His powerful shoulders and arms. Women would line the streets in New Seattle just to admire his physique. After all, who could resist a man like him, wearing nothing but a leather kilt?

SEDUCE by Felicity Heaton

Sera paced in front of the black stage in the empty theatre. She had arrived a full thirty minutes early for her appointment. An appointment she hadn’t realised she’d had. Callum hadn’t specified a time for her interview. He had just said to come by whenever as the theatre was closed. So she had.

The woman who had shown her into the theatre had been very kind. One of the staff based on her short black dress that revealed far too much leg and bosom. Sera reminded herself that she couldn’t really judge the woman by the clothes she wore. After all, it was her uniform and Sera herself was trying out for a position as some sort of on-stage whore. What on Earth must the woman have thought of her? Perhaps Sera should have asked to interview for a position as one of the staff. Cleaning seemed infinitely more appealing, and possible for her, than being a performer in the shows. Antoine still would have met with her so they could sign her employment contracts. Was it too late to change her mind?

She continued her pacing, her eyes roaming over the deep red velvet curtain that closed off most of the stage, leaving only a strip of painted black boards around three metres deep exposed, and twirled her long blonde hair around her fingers. It was so quiet in the theatre that even her breathing sounded loud in her ears. How much longer did she have to wait?

And why were they interviewing her in the theatre itself?

Elizabeth had said they would take her to one of the meeting rooms or the offices to interview her. That was what she had gone through to get her position at the theatre decades ago. Sera shook her hands at her sides and blew out a sigh, trying to expel her nerves. Maybe the offices weren’t vacant tonight or they wanted to give her a tour before the interview began. That seemed plausible.

One of the sets of double doors at the back opened and a bright beam of light cut down the length of the dimly lit theatre to her. She shielded her sensitive eyes with her hand and squinted so she could make out if someone was there.

Her heart stopped.

The doors closed.

Antoine strode down the aisle, long legs carrying him easily at a brisk pace, as handsome as ever in his silver-grey tailored shirt that emphasised his build and clung just right to his muscles, hinting at how delicious his body would look if he were naked and stirring her imagination into a frenzy. His black tie, crisp black trousers and polished leather shoes perfected his image of a businessman but made him look decadent and alluring at the same time.

Behind him walked the immense male vampire that she knew from the performances. Victor. His normally thick dark hair was gone, shaved to his scalp to reveal thin scar lines in places, giving him a menacing air as he followed Antoine, dressed in a tight black t-shirt and jeans.

Were they just passing through?

Her heart started again at a pace.

Please, God, say they were just passing through.

Antoine shoved his fingers through his deep brown hair, the action screaming of irritation as much as his scent on her senses. He was annoyed about something. Was he angry with Victor for some reason? Continue reading

THE MATING HUNT by Bonnie Vanak

Someone was having sex in the bathroom of Spuds Saloon.

Arianna Sanders wriggled her Spanx-clad bottom on the hard wood seat. The musky scent drifted down the hallway, tickling her nostrils. Low groans and high squeals throbbed against her eardrums.

Bad enough to be a 19-year-old unmated Lupine werewolf ripe for breeding, but to hunger for sex was pure hell.

Pure hell when you were terrified of the very thing your body craved.

Pure hell when you emitted a cloud of pheromones so powerful, you attracted everything from male werewolves to Ogres.

“Blame your big butt,” Darius had told her. “From the back, you look like a female Ogre. Hubba hubba.”

The pack beta ended up sporting a black eye for that remark.

Sitting at a table against the brick wall, Arianna flexed her sore knuckles. Yeah, she had a fat ass. But she also had the best nose in the pack, other than Kyle, her guardian and partner in hunting. And if she and Kyle were to get a bead on three missing Lupine young, they needed information. Spuds was the place where cowboys traded gossip in Hancock, Montana.

Booted heels hooked over the barstool rungs; men lined up at the bar like cattle at a watering trough. Her nostrils flared at the stench of spilt beer and heavy cologne. A wailing country western song pounded against her temples. Damn, she hated bars, but vowed to find out what she could. The three little ones had vanished two weeks ago while hiking with their parents near Mitchell Mountain. The frantic parents contacted Amber Alert, pretending the young were Skins, the Lupine term for humans.

Her sensitive hearing picked up a few stray conversations. “Missing kids.” “Searched forest.” Arianna studied the crowd, looking for signs of nervousness as Kyle had taught her. Rugged bikers sitting at a corner table scowled at the crowd, but she scented nothing unusual.

Except at the bar. There.

Two men in sheepskin jackets studied their beer mugs as sweat oozed from their pores. Their hearts began to pound harder as talk centered on the missing young.

They knew something.

As she headed for the jukebox to eavesdrop, a woman screamed from the back room. “Oh God, oh God!”

Several cowboys snickered. “Damn, thought this was a bar, not a church,” one shouted out.

An embarrassed flush suffused Arianna’s body. She needed to get info and get the hell out.

Her boot heels clicked on the scuffed wood floor as she crossed the room. As she reached the jukebox, her targets pulled money from their wallets and tossed a handful of dollar bills on the bar. She strained to see their faces, but they turned and headed for the exit. Arianna followed.

A drunk staggered into her and grabbed her arm. “C’mere, honey, you smell good. That little lady back there ain’t gonna be the only one getting lucky tonight.” Continue reading

HARD MATED by Jennifer Ashley

His only warning was the bone-rattling roar before several tons of enraged bear Shifter landed on him. Spike in his jaguar form rolled out of the way, twisted in a half-somersault through the dust, and came up under the bear’s throat.

The crowd—under the blaze of bonfires, work lights, and lantern flashlights—roared, Shifter throats open in howls of glee.

Spike slashed upward with his fangs, catching the loose skin under the bear’s chin, right above his Collar. The bear scrambled backward, swinging his head to pry loose the wildcat clinging to his throat. Spike wrapped all four huge jaguar paws around the bear’s neck and hung on, biting down enough to taste blood.

Both the bear’s and Spike’s Collars were sparking wildly, the mechanisms designed to stop Shifters from giving in to violence.

Too late. Way too late. The beast in Spike wanted to tear into the bear’s jugular and gulp down his blood, pull off his head and kick it into the middle of the ring. Spike would prove to all watchers that a wildcat could best a bear five times his size. Speed and cunning were what counted in the ring, not being as big as a two-ton pickup.

But the beast inside Spike would have to deal with it, because this was the fight club, and there were rules.

Didn’t mean Spike didn’t enjoy a little blood squeezing out of the bear. Feel that, shithead.

The crowd roared again, and also howled and snarled, because not everyone was in human form.

Shifters pressed forward around the ring, some still dressed, some naked and ready to shift, some already animals or half beasts. Scents both human and Shifter clogged the air, layers of excitement from the shifted females blending with the sweat of the males.

But most of all Spike smelled the bear who’d come down from Wisconsin, who thought he could best Spike, the champion of the highly illegal Shifter fight club.

Spike bit down, tasting victory, but that was before the bear grabbed Spike in his formidable front paws and jerked him from his neck.

That cost the bear, whose blood poured onto the dirt. But the grizzly lifted the squirming Spike-as-jaguar and threw him across the ring.

Spike spun in midair, corkscrewing his body. He landed on all four paws right inside the upended cinderblocks that marked the perimeter of the ring. If he’d landed outside, he’d have forfeited the match.

Cats land on their feet, dick-brain.

Teaseday – Winter’s Kiss (Vampires Realm Romance Series Book 8) Plus FREE EBOOK

Today’s tease comes from the book Winter’s Kiss, which is book 8 in my popular Vampires Realm romance series.

Read on for this Tuesday’s tease… It’s a super long one today but I just couldn’t help including all of this scene as it’s one of my favourites in the novel. A little background info – Nika has been bitten by a werewolf and was saved by Winter, a vampire of the Validus bloodline who secretly longed to turn her when she was mortal, claiming her as his mate. Now, they’re on the run from the werewolf, Willem, trying to get Nika to safety… and have sneaked into the Validus mansion for a brief pit-stop…

Winter's Kiss - paranormal werewolf romance Book

She took his breath away. Her honey blonde hair hung in wet ringlets that stroked her cheeks and caressed her bare shoulders. A black towel hid her soft pale body, a dazzling contrast. His gaze skimmed over her, taking in the shape of her and stopping when he reached her legs. The one she had broken still bore a red mark where the bone was healing. It marred her otherwise perfect skin, a reminder of her ordeal.

Taking the shirt with him, he walked across the room to her. She smiled when he placed the oversized black shirt around her shoulders and covered her. His gaze fell to her throat and he noticed that she had removed her cross. He glanced down to see it in her hand, spinning as it dangled from the chain.

“I’m scared,” she said, her eyes reflecting all that fear, enormous and soulful, tempting him into holding her and whispering sweet words of reassurance.

He smiled, hoping it would be enough to calm her, and drew the shirt closed across her chest. “There is nothing to fear. We shall leave this place soon.”

“And go where?”

Winter wished he knew. The thought of taking her to the compound made a strange uneasiness settle in his chest. He pressed his hand against it and rubbed the spot over his heart, hoping to soothe the dull ache. There had to be a way of discovering where the werewolves hid their bastion.

“We cannot remain here.” He moved back across the room to the bed, sensing her following him, her footsteps almost silent on the extensive black and red Chinese rug that covered most of the floor, leaving only a thin border of dark wooden floorboards around the edges.

“Why not?” she said and sat down on the end of his double bed.

The black towel she wore melted into the black sheets. She removed the shirt from her shoulders and placed it down beside her. When she leaned back, her slender pale hands were a stark contrast to the bedclothes. His gaze traversed the length of her arms, following the line of them up to her shoulders. His stomach turned and growled when his gaze reached the smooth, sublime column of her throat. Her hair had fallen away, revealing the slope of it, covered with dewdrops of moisture that clung in the most enticing way to her skin. An urge to chase them with his tongue filled him, commanding him to go to her and slowly lick her throat until he had caught every drop. It led onto a desire to lean into her then, to ease his teeth into her neck and draw on her warm blood, to take her completely and in ways that he had only seen in fantasies of her.

“Why can’t we stay here?”

Sensual Sunday’s always feature a hot excerpt from one of my paranormal romance books. Read on for this Sunday’s sensual snippet… it’s a scorching hot one this week… and opens in a private booth in a nightclub with one very hungry werewolf and one very wicked vampire…

Crave - paranormal vampire romance Book

Callum backed her up until her calves hit the curved leather seat of the booth and she fell onto her bottom. He towered over her, immense and beautiful, dark and deadly, just the sight of him exciting her. Kristina tried to stand again but he pressed his right hand to her shoulder and forced her back onto the seat.

He tugged at the knot of his dark purple tie and loosened it before slipping the two sides free of each other. His fingers started on the buttons of his black shirt next and a tiny seed of fear settled in the pit of her stomach, took root, and started to grow.

“We should take this somewhere a little more private,” she said automatically and he paused at his work, his fingers halfway down his chest and the top part of his shirt open to reveal the groove between his pectorals.

Snippet Saturday – Author’s Choice – Excerpt from Hunter’s Moon (Vampires Realm Romance Series Book 9)

It’s time for Snippet Saturday! Each week has a theme or is author’s choice. This week the theme is author’s choice.

This week’s snippet comes from Hunter’s Moon, which is the ninth book in the Vampires Realm romance series, and is a vampire / werewolf romance. It’s a bit of a long one today as I just couldn’t decide on one part of the opening chapter… so I thought I would post it all!

Hunter's Moon - paranormal werewolf romance Book

Crisp air rushed through Nicolae’s black fur in a constant stream, shifting with him as he wove through the dark forest, keeping pace with the bulk of the local timber wolf pack. The group ahead of him, led by the grey alpha, snarled and played, riding up on each other’s shoulders as they ran. Nicolae bounded after them, his paws pounding the uneven ground and his footing sure. He ducked under a low branch and then leapt over a fallen tree, landing softly in the fresh leaf litter on the other side. Mountains stretched into the distance before him through the woods, their craggy peaks highlighted by glowing white snow. The fat moon flickered between the bare branches above him and called to his blood.

Nicolae obeyed.

He raced with the pack down the slope towards the hidden glade in the forest. Leafless trees gave way to tall pines that towered above him, blocking the light, and his eyes adjusted, the dark world around him sharpening and his senses following suit. Cool fingers of wind caressed his ears as he headed in amongst the pack and joined in their play, enjoying the clear wintry air and the bright night with them. Several younger wolves in the pack snarled and nudged him, and he playfully responded, gently shouldering them as they ran and fighting for dominance. He let them win even though they were far smaller than he was.

Nicolae wasn’t interested in gaining rank within the pack. He was here to enjoy the moment and the company. Running with the timber wolves under a full moon excited him, took him away from the complications of the human world and set him free. There was nothing in the world as exhilarating as surrendering to his true nature.

Animal sounds filled his ears, undetectable to the humans who lived in the rugged mountainous region of Canada. The deer down in the valley ahead were moving, heading for a safe place to spend the night. He could picture them now as they waited nervously in the shadows of the trees around the glade, alert and aware of the wolves that ran in the dark forest. They would move and make it out onto the narrow strip of grazing land between the banks of woods at the valley bottom before the wolves reached them.

Tomorrow, there would be reports of a wolf attack on the deer, and how the Casey’s horses had panicked, and Nicolae would have to pretend that it startled him to hear such a thing.

That he hadn’t participated in the hunt and the kill of deer.

That he wasn’t a wolf.

A burst of wings broke the silence, owls fluttering from their roosts and heading high into the sky. Hungry wolf eyes instantly tracked them for a heartbeat of time and then the pack moved on, their focus returning to playing and hunting the deer. The day birds settled down in their nests, safe from predators for another night, unbothered by the wolves running below.

The pack began to streak ahead and Nicolae returned his attention to them. His blood rushed and his heart thundered. He felt wild. Alive. The leaders were dark blurs in the distance, almost blending in with the night, silent predators built for this terrain. Younger wolves jostled for position nearer to him. He raced to catch up, the cold air burning in his lungs and a sense of freedom flowing through him.

A howl cut the night and the wolves shifted as one, turning right towards the mountain, away from the glade and the grazing land beyond. Something had caught their attention. The howl came again and Nicolae listened this time, deciphering it. Wolf-speak was old and varied from pack to pack, but he had studied this one closely, and long enough that they had accepted his presence on the mountain. They no longer feared him. It had taken him a century of working with each generation, but he had gained their trust and their friendship, and had learned how to communicate with them.

He pounded up to the peak of a bare hillock, threw his head back, and howled at the moon through the barren trees.

The answering call told him why the wolves were now running with intent.

There were men on the mountain.

Men who didn’t belong there.
