A man in a leather coat stood in what used to be the doorway. He was tall. And big. At least six-three or four, with broad, powerful shoulders. A once-black T-shirt, now covered in dust, stretched tightly across his well-defined chest. Low-slung jeans with a studded leather belt and chain accentuated his narrow hips. He was dressed like an outlaw from a motorcycle gang.<\/p>\n

He was also favoring one leg and cradling his arm.<\/p>\n

Without thinking of the consequences, Olivia flew to his side and righted an overturned chair. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Here. Sit.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

When she helped him into the seat, her hand inadvertently brushed his. Before she jerked it away, a visual list of his injuries rolled like movie credits in her head. Concussion but no head trauma, broken clavicle and leg, cracked ribs, torn meniscus, multiple contusions.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153No. I\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He had a strange accent. One she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d never heard before. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Need to\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6find my dog.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

She blinked once, confused, and then she remembered the dog she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d seen before the explosion. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s yours?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

The man brightened. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Is he here?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153No, I saw him a few minutes before all this happened.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

His face fell and he started to push himself up.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hold on,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What are you doing?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Got\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6to\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6find\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6him.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

It was strange to see such a man looking so vulnerable. Because his injuries weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t life-threatening, she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be able to heal them fairly quickly, though. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not going anywhere like this. Not until I can\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

As soon as she bent down to kneel in front of him, her mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s admonitions rang in her head. What the hell am I doing?<\/i> She pulled her hands back as if she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d just burned them. She couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let anyone, especially a stranger, know what she was capable of. It wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like he was dying, she reasoned. It would be a different story if he were. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll turn up.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

He was studying her a little too intently, and she got the distinct impression it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t because he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe what she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d said about his dog.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Wait here,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she ordered, standing up quickly. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll let someone know you need an ambulance.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153No,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said vehemently. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No ambulances.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He sure didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sound confused anymore.<\/p>\n

Unruly dark hair, which included a few thin braids, hung over his brow, reminding her of the wild stallions in the horse books she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d read as a kid. His features were chiseled, his jaw square and strong. His nose, though straight, had a bump on the bridge as if it had been broken once or twice. Not tonight, but earlier. And his eyes\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6God, those eyes.<\/p>\n

They were almost otherworldly.<\/p>\n

Framed with thick lashes a girl would kill for, the steely-gray of his irises glimmered in the glare of the aid cars\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 lights as if they were backlit. Even though he was hurt, she found him rugged, powerful, and utterly beautiful.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I saw you here\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6earlier.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

He had to be confused, because if he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d been in, she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d have remembered him. He wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the sort of man she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d ever forget. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oh really?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she asked, humoring him.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You gave him\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6water. Thank you.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You did<\/i> see me,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said, a little startled. She narrowed her eyes, trying to think of where he could\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Were you\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Across the street,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he finished. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153At the club.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d His voice had a rough, hardened edge, which she found oddly soothing. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Are you okay?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he asked, looking around the rubble of the wine shop.<\/p>\n

No, she wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t okay. She was shaken up, freaked out, and really, really scared. But at least she was alive. Unlike her boss.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I was trapped downstairs in the wine cellar when it happened. I just got out.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not injured, lass?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Lass? Is he visiting from Scotland or something?<\/i><\/p>\n

His concern for her despite the fact that he was in much worse shape struck an unexpected chord. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m fine. Really. Please, let me get you some help.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153No. No help for me,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he repeated. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But my dog\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

He grabbed the back of the chair and tried to push himself to a standing position.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hold on.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d She held up her hands but didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t touch him. She didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to see another laundry list of his injuries again. And once she made contact with an injured person, it was hard not to heal them. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in no shape to go anywhere. What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s your name?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she asked, trying to distract him.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Asher,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he groaned. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But I must leave.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Well, Asher, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m Olivia, and you really need to take it easy. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got a list of injuries a mile long. And\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6I mean\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d She tried to backpedal. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You seem like you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re hurt pretty badly. You know, just from how you look.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Oh man, she needed to just stop talking or she was going to dig herself into a deeper hole. Of course he looked injured. Any regular person without a Talent could see that. She didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to be acting so guilty.<\/p>\n

He opened his mouth, probably to protest, but just then, a man in a reflective orange vest appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hey, if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not hurt, I could really use your help out here.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

She looked at Asher. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not, but he needs\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Asher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s eyes turned concrete gray. There was a tiny, yet deliberate shake of his head. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m fine,<\/i> he mouthed.<\/p>\n

Okay. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bizarre.<\/i><\/p>\n

He clearly didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want any medical treatment, but given how hurt she knew he was, it didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make sense. Maybe he had an aversion to needles or something. If the tables were turned and she was the one with all those injuries, she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d totally go and\u00e2\u20ac\u201d No, wait. She wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be excited to go to the hospital, either. The authorities might find out about her.<\/p>\n

She chewed on her bottom lip. Part of her wanted to go out and help, but the rest of her wanted to get as far away as possible. Out there, she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be surrounded by injured and suffering people. She didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know if she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be able to resist using her abilities. And if someone were dying\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n

The aid worker clapped his hands. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Come on. Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s go. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re wasting time.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
