Like Pride & Prejudice with vampires

I was thinking about Heart of Darkness yesterday morning on the way to work, and realised that it’s like Pride and Prejudice but with vampires. He’s a haughty, proud noble who has slightly backwards attitude towards women and sees the heroine as something to be won, something to just reach out and take, because he’s been out of society for so long tracking vampire hunters that he hasn’t quite realised that women in this century are a bit more independent. She’s a feisty, strong woman who isn’t about to let any man, not even a prince, treat her like an object, and she certainly doesn’t need protecting. She’s always stood on her own two feet and never relied on anyone. If he wants her, he’s going to have to clean up his act and take the right approach. Of course, it takes her refusing his advances several times for him to realise that he’s taking the wrong approach entirely and needs to take a new tack with her! Just the sort of story I like, and with an added level of darkness that I think will make it plenty different from every other vampire romance book out there.

I do like to be different with my stories, and I think it really shows in the comments I’ve had with my Seventh Circle and Love Immortal posting on Authonomy.com. People are commenting on how refreshing it is to have such a different vampire story on the site.

Since the advent of 2009, and the rise of the vampires again in books and movies, I’ve been worried that agents and publishers will be sick of vampire romance or paranormal romance novels, and that I won’t stand a chance because everyone and their dog is trying to get in on an already crowded market. But seeing the posts from other authors and hearing the feedback from my readers, gives me confidence that my books are different from every other story out there. They’re a new take, a new approach, and something I truly believe that readers will adore in this time of same-old, same-old. In this market, if it isn’t different, it’s dead.

I’ve always tried to stand out and give readers something new, and I think my stories do that, and judging by the number of you wonderful readers that follow my stories and send me emails about them, you think they’re new and different too.

I’ve finished planning Heart of Darkness now, and I’ll begin writing it on Monday. It will probably take me 5 weeks to write during my journeys to / from work and lunches, but I might get it done quicker. My novels these days are more complicated, which means longer. This one looks as though it’s going to be 120,000 words, like Forbidden Blood was in first draft!

Happy reading everyone!

Lulu books, A Day In The Life, and holidays

I’m very excited at the moment because I’ve just booked the flights for a holiday I’m taking with my husband in June. We’re going to Australia, via Shanghai on the way there and Tokyo on the way back. Yes, I’m always going to Tokyo, I know. There’s a reason I speak Japanese!

I placed an order back on New Year’s Eve for a paperback version of Seventh Circle as I’m going to get it done with distribution on Lulu, and it only just came today, and probably because I complained about it. I had to mail them twice in the end about it as it had been sitting there in “fulfilling” mode since I ordered it, and that was three weeks ago. Two mails later and I actually received a reply telling me it was all sorted now and they’d sent it to me.

I came home tonight and there was not one but two copies of it sitting on my doormat! Oh well, two copies of my book for the price of one. I can’t really complain about that, but it would’ve been nice to have it a week or so ago since it will take ages to get into Amazon once I’ve approved it.

Speaking of Amazon, their Kindle publishing arm now accepts non-US authors, which means I can finally create and sell Kindle books on Amazon. Praise be. I was getting rather miffed about the fact that I couldn’t sell my books as Kindle editions considering that I can sell them to the entire world on most other sites. I even joined Smashwords to get into Amazon Kindle and other major distribution sites. I’ve opted out of the Amazon option there now and I’m going to produce my own Kindle editions. That’s another thing to consume my time.

I did a second draft on my next three A Day in the Life series stories today. Going well. I’ve planned another two as well, which leaves three more to plan, and then I’ll have to write those five.

That’s all for now…

Romance novels, editing, writing and synopses! Oh My!

I’m in a plotting and planning mood right now. I think it’s a vague attempt to escape writing synopses for Love Immortal. It has been quite productive. I’ve plotted five of my A Day in the Life series short romance stories and have written three of them. I’m planning to write eight of them this year and have chosen which characters will feature. I have to plot another three, but it shouldn’t be too difficult since they’re only 4000 word scenes.

I did figure out my rough schedule for the year to see what it was going to look like. Conclusion: Frightening.

I will write the first draft of Heart of Darkness in February, and after that I need to schedule in two more drafts each on Heart of Darkness, Forbidden Blood and Ascension. And after that I need to proof all three, and write their synopses, etc. When I totted this up on a calendar, allowing for writing, editing and proofing my A Day in the Life stories too, it turns out that to do everything minus the synopses will take me until the end of September. Blech.

I hate it when I figure things out and it basically says – yes, you’re going to be editing, editing and editing until September! Congratulations! Of course, another story will come along and bump that date a bit because I’ll write it in some fevered attempt to escape editing hell. I think it’s a special circle of Hell reserved for writers… or at least writers who aren’t lazy and do edit and do several drafts on their stories to perfect them.

Of course, there’s only one thing for it. I’ll just have to get my head down and get on with it. I’m not going to rush things though. I like to be thorough with my writing and do things properly. If I get my head down I should be able to shave some time off my predicted timescales. A few days off each soon adds up when you’re talking second and third drafts on three novels. If I manage to get three days off each, I claw back a couple of weeks working time. It doesn’t sound like much, but I could probably write 40,000 words in that time. I generally write for four days a week on my journey to and from work, and at lunch, and can usually clock up around 5000-6000 words on each day. That’s 20,000 a week. So, if I knuckle down and get on with my editing and really focus, I could save enough time to write half a novel. Yay!

I really want to get on with my Hades’ Boys series too. I need to do extensive planning on it since it’s a seven book series where the main story arc runs through them all, with each story having its own arc as well. I haven’t written anything like that before, but I have written my three book Prophecy Trilogy, so I know how much planning needs to go into it. A lot! I might start doing bits for it on weekends when I can, but I don’t usually have much spare time then.

Ah, it’s a planning, plotting, writing and editing nightmare, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just wish that doing second and third drafts didn’t take me as long as writing the first draft does! I could get so much more written and I’m bursting with new stories right now.

New paranormal romance novel and the year ahead

Just before Christmas I had another new idea for a story. I didn’t put it on the backburner as it was rather persistent. I believe that I mentioned it back in December and that I was writing notes for it at the time. Well, I finished writing the bulk of the notes for it and now I just need to get them into a coherent order and complete the outline of the novel. At this point, it feels as though it’s going to be somewhere between 90-100,000 words long. That’s a good length for a paranormal romance novel. It might end up longer.

The story now has a title: Heart of Darkness. It pretty much sums up the kind of story you guys are going to get. The hero is the dark one, a little out of touch with vampire society and balancing on the knife’s edge of becoming dangerous and little more than a monster. Of course, the heroine will bring him around and enlighten him about how things are done in this century, and save him from the growing darkness within him.

I don’t often write stories where both the hero and heroine are already vampires, so it’s nice to write something different. I don’t think Love Immortal counts on that front as they’re not precisely vampires. They’re more than that, and the heroine was human at the start.

I am gravitating towards vampires again, but I don’t mind. I know the market for them is probably saturated right now but I think that something different will always stand out amongst the crowd and be noticed. I’m sure that’s the case with this story. It’s quite dark. Yes, I usually write novels and stories that are dark, but this one has a new level, a little like Forbidden Blood has.

I do get to explore their society again, and I like that. I really enjoy having to think about things such as the rules they live by, the hierarchy of their society, the roles they have and how they live in our world without being noticed. It’s fun to tinker with these things.

Besides, the other series I’ve been planning for a while now and can only refer to as Hades’ Boys for now, is non-vampire (they’re demons/gods) and something I’m definitely going to write this year. I’ve been planning this seven book series for over a year now, on and off, and it’s time I gave it some more serious thought and plotted out the rough story arc of each book, and the overall arc of all seven paranormal romance novels. Believe me, it’s not as though I haven’t given this story some serious thinking time already. I have two notebooks worth of notes on the series already, but I’m nowhere near done on figuring everything out. It’s a monster of a series and I’m gagging to get going on it. It’s going to be a challenge to get it planned out in at least skeleton form and bordering on masochistic to write them all. I just need the main overall arc decided and planned, and the first three books fleshed out. The other four can be skeletons for now, which they almost are, and I’ll work on them as I go.

Of course, I can’t start writing this novel until I get other things done. I need to write a couple of my A Day In The Life short stories first, and finish writing synopses for Love Immortal. I think I should be able to start writing it in February, after which I’m going to focus on the second draft of Forbidden Blood. I have that printed out and ready for a nice sit down with some coffee and a read through. I might get out of the house that weekend and spend the day in Starbucks somewhere, so I’m not distracted from reading it. I do get distracted when I read at home. It’ll be a Saturday so I could probably go into Oxford with my husband when he goes to work and read it in a cafe there. I think it’s very important to have a good first read through as a reader, not an editor or author. It’s mostly about the storyline, characters, and any glaring holes at that point.

The other novel that needs my attention this year is Ascension. I think the second draft on this one will take longer than the one for Forbidden Blood. There’s definitely things I would like to change or add to in Ascension. I felt that way with Love Immortal and that took me weeks to do a second and third draft on. It will probably come after I’ve done the second draft on Forbidden Blood and written another couple of A Day In The Life short stories to clear the editing fuzz from my mind.

I’m off to plan a few shorts for A Day In The Life and work out my synopsis writing/submission plan for Love Immortal. Have a great day everyone!

Paranormal romance girl

It’s amazing just how much you forget about your childhood. My mum brought over some of my old schoolwork a few weeks ago and I just had to flick through it. We had to do regular book reports. I suppose they used them as a way of making sure that we read a lot. I must have been no more than seven or eight when I had written these reports and some of the comments were hilarious. What struck me most was the fact that I seemed to find a lot of the books boring… except every single story that had a paranormal twist. I don’t recall a lot of the stories and poems, but the ones about vampires, ghosts, witches and fictional characters such as Dracula and Frankenstein made a big impact on me and were duly rated as brilliant, although sometimes the pictures were boring.

I hadn’t realised just how far back I had been interested in the darker side of fiction—the demonic creatures and paranormal or fantasy. I had always thought it had started later. Looking back now, I realise that it is little wonder that I turned out the way I did.

When I couple my reading choices with my more formative years as I hit double figures, I can see where my passion for crafting characters and stories has come from.

When you’re young and you walk to school, spend time at school, or just time at home, with a bunch of vampires in your head, you think you’re a little abnormal. I had a whole world going on in my head and can still remember it vividly. There was a leading man, a vampire of course, with longish black hair and a penchant for black clothing. He could walk in daylight with me, but wasn’t strong then, much like Dracula, or my hero in Arcadian. He had blue/purple eyes. Of course, there wasn’t a heroine back then—just me. I guess my inner heroine was assuming the role. I built a world for him, with other vampires, all with names that were foreign and exotic at the time but probably quite standard in the world now. He was called Xavier. He had friends called things like Zachary and other quite normal names for these times.

Of course, I never told anyone that I had such a world going on in my head. My parents wouldn’t have minded. They’re very supportive and probably would have encouraged me rather than sent me to a shrink for being a teen with a mind full of vampires that had been with her for the past couple of years.

I guess you could say I’ve always had a very active imagination, a powerful one. (Which is why I just can’t watch horror paranormals where things nastily go bump in the night, or alien films where they come to Earth and are a bit creepy—I’m still freaked out because my husband made me go and see Signs at the cinema!)

I told my husband about my fictional world just the other day and he wasn’t surprised. He said it was just my inner writer coming out and I know that’s the truth.

I have all sorts of characters in my head now. There’s pretty much a waiting room at a train station in my mind, albeit a rather plush comfy one, and they come and go as they please. Some are pushier than others, and others just like to lounge around waiting their turn on the stage, watching the others perform. I think that to write well, and to create characters that seem real to people, they have to be real to you. You have to converse with them, know them, and have them locked in that waiting room unable to escape, so you can quiz them when you need to about what they are going to do to get out of the terrible situation you’ve written them into. You also have to be able to bend with them. Sometimes a character is going to put his foot down (I say his because it’s normally a bloke for me) and say that he isn’t going to fit the mould you’ve assigned to him and do what he’s told—he wants to be something different, do something different. You just have to roll with it, give him his way, and figure out how to make his new shape fit into your story.

You have to care about your characters or your readers won’t. You have to laugh with them, cry with them, and fall in love with them, or your readers just won’t react the way you want them to. Oh, and you have to want your readers to react. You’re writing a story with the intent of sucking them in, giving them a fantastic perfectly created world and characters, somewhere they can lose themselves for a while. Doing that but not thinking about how your reader should feel at certain points makes all that work redundant. If they’re not laughing, crying or smiling with happiness at the right points, you’ve fallen short of the mark. I always strive to hit the right emotional note with my readers, and I hope they see that. I want the characters in my head not to live on the page for them, but to move into their head and speak to them through the story, like a movie in their mind.

So, yeah, I feel a little crazy sometimes when characters are popping into my head for a quick catch up or long heart to heart, but I think it’s worth it. Besides, I get to meet some great people and you haven’t read all their stories yet, but they’ll be making themselves at home in your head and heart soon enough.

Trailer for New Moon

I went to the cinema on the weekend with my husband (to see District 9, which was very good) and there was a trailer for the next film in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, New Moon. Husband turned to me with raised brows and I was looking much the same. I’ve never read the stories but I do see similarities in it to my Vampires Realm series–with the laws and those that uphold them, the separation of hero and heroine, and introduction of a sub-hero. It’s all very Prophecy Trilogy to me.

I must admit that I have watched the first film, Twilight, because a few readers wrote to me at the time it was out and said that my Prophecy Trilogy / Vampires Realm series was better, which made me quite proud considering that it’s only self-published romance ebooks. I would love to see it published in paperback one day by a big publishing house, but I don’t think I will hold my breath! Maybe one day when they pick up Arcadian or Ascension and start trawling my back catalogue for more stories to make money from.

Still, it was interesting to see the trailer for New Moon, although I’m not sure I’ll go and see it, and I’ll be sticking with my Vampires Realm series in terms of books as I’m not really into the teen romance market. I prefer my stories with more bite, a touch more adult content (violence, not just the sex!) and I don’t really like stories written in the first person as I want to know what both the hero and heroine are thinking.

Does anyone else see the similarities, or is it just me?

Does anyone think that Prophecy Trilogy would make a darn good series of movies?

Ixion has loved his elusive princess, Natalia, since the night he revealed himself to her, and now he faces a daily struggle between his duty and his heart, between hoping a princess could love him, an assassin and man of no rank in society, and fearing that she loves another man more worthy of her heart.

When Natalia insists on going to the spring festival, Ixion is ordered to ensure her safety, just as she hoped, but things don’t go as smoothly as she had planned. An explosion in the port triggers a battle between the purist factions and the imperial army and Natalia is caught in the middle of it.

Will Ixion be able to protect Natalia? Will Natalia be able to convince Ixion that she loves him and that the passionate night they share won’t be their only time? When her family discovers she’s in love with an assassin, will Natalia be able to save him or will Ixion face a death sentence?
