Happy Valentine’s Day romance lovers – and a little update
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I hope you have a wonderfully romantic day. I know my day has been wonderful so far, with my husband giving my roses, chocolates and champagne–everything cliche but sweet all the same.
I’ve had a long week with Arcadian, battling through a hard-to-write patch because I’ve reached the mid-way mark and I always lose my flow around this part a little. I have next week off work so I can hopefully get more written for the story, but normally I end up filling my time with other stuff and not writing when I’m on holiday.
Every time I complete a few chapters, I go back to my outline and see how many more I think there are to come. At this moment, I think I have another 52000 words to write, but it might be less (or more!). That would make the story around 135000 words, which is a relief. Now I just have to wait and see what really happens.
I added a new character in yesterday. It was a necessary addition and might make the story more interesting as it’s on the antagonist’s side. He could use a little company right now.
I’m trying to think about what I can post to give everyone a hint at the story, but I don’t want to give too much away. All I can say is that it involves numerous people with different powers–including the ability to manipulate electricity, a necromancer, and a psychic–and two immortals, one born of a Greek goddess, along with vampires and werewolves. It’s complicated, fast paced, and very romantic.
I had to write a fight scene yesterday morning which went better than expected. I had put it off on the way home the night before, skirting around the issue and playing games on my laptop instead of writing, but finally started it and it turned out good. Not too slow. The trouble with fight scenes is that writers have a tendency to drag them out and bog them down with detail. It just slows the story. Must keep the pace!
Here’s my tally so far:
Arcadian
82,679 / 125,000
[66.1%]
82,679 / 125,000
[66.1%]
Not too shoddy. I’m glad that I’m past the halfway point now and I have some great scenes coming up so plenty of motivation to keep writing!
Will keep you all posted.

update on my latest romance novel
Arcadian is well under way now and while I had found my flow last week, reaching the 60,000 word mark, I am now in that dreaded middle section and things are going slower. I don’t mind though as I’ve written so many stories now that I’m quite accustomed to this point in writing the story and always continue to push on, regardless of how tempting it is to take a break when it seems like a struggle to write.
A few kind readers have asked what the story is about this time. I’m going to write about that in my next post as I don’t have enough time right now. Rest assured that it’s my usual complex romance with a twisting plot and plenty of paranormal action. Think Prophecy Trilogy or Seventh Circle and you’ll be in the right ballpark for the type of story that I’m writing with Arcadian.
Thankfully, the story is now feeling more like a 120,000 to 140,000 word romance novel that I could trim down and tighten to bring nearer to the 100,000 word mark. A few of the scenes that I had plotted out were shorter than expected. Also, because I only have scenes scribbled down for the first half of the story, I have a lot of plot outline for the later chapters, so I’ll probably find a lot of them aren’t as long as I am imagining.
At least I hope that will be the case.
I’ve already figured out parts in the first few chapters that need changing or tightening, so I’ll probably cut at least 2000 from there.
Of course, I’ll probably add that back in elsewhere!
I’m not used to writing to a limit, especially with a romance novel this in depth and complicated. I don’t want to skimp on things as that will only take away from the readers experience of the story. I would rather it be too long and get rejected by some publishing houses and agents than have readers dissatisfied with it.
I don’t have my little tally thing today, but I’ll update you all again this weekend and include it then. For now, it’s roughly 60,000 words long and still going. We’re roughly at the halfway mark. The heroine and hero are working things out and taking steps towards each other now. We’re heading for a big upheaval.
Can’t wait to write that bit!
For now, I have to settle with some neck biting action!!

Forced start… but we’re on our way
I haven’t written for over two months, so when it came time to start Arcadian in earnest, it was difficult to work up the energy to get going, especially since I have to carry my laptop with me to London everyday if I want to write. The lazy side of me wanted to put starting off until this weekend, throwing out the schedule, but I managed to get going and once I did, it wasn’t so difficult.
Whenever I have a break in writing, it’s always difficult to get back into it. My mind seems to ask why I have to write and then my heart argues that I love to write, I enjoy it, so get going! It’s war, but with a peaceful outcome once the muse gives me a royal kick up the backside and I finally start writing.
I have hit a snag already though. Something which I feared when I had written out the plot outline and seen the length of it! The other day when my laptop had succumbed to a lack of battery and died on me (after around 3.5 hours of writing. good laptop!) I went through the plot outline for the novel and roughly divided it into chapters. I was a little unnerved when I found it might be another 30 chapters. I had already completed 4 at this point, and my average length for a chapter is around 5000 words in this story. That means the novel is looking at coming out around the 170,000 words mark. Far too high if I want to get it trade published by approaching publishers and agents. When I made it home, I checked some of the first novels of other paranormal romance authors and they all varied between 90,000 and 130,000. Most publishers state they want a length of 70,000 to 100,000. If I can get an agent, I might be able to get away with 130,000… or perhaps if my submitted three chapters are good enough, then a publisher might overlook the length… but 170,000??? I’m really hoping that my chopping up of the plot into chapters is wrong and it does come out nearer to 130,000. When I had finished writing up the plot outline, I had an inkling that it was no longer a 100,000 word story as I had first anticipated, but rather one nearer to 130,000. I’m still hoping that my instincts are right on that one!
So, the word count so far (and pretty much for just this past week) is:
Arcadian
27,791 / 125,000
[22.2%]
27,791 / 125,000
[22.2%]
I’m going to stick with 125,000 as the target. I’m almost at the quarter mark in that case and probably 2 chapters from the first gateway/point of no return.
I also realised on the train home last night that we’re seeing a lot from the heroine’s POV but not a tremendous amount from the hero. He’s had around 1.25 chapters so far, and she’s had around 3.75. Right now it’s important we’re with her though, and I know there are a lot more chapters with the hero to come in the 1/4 to 1/2 way point in the story.
That’s all for now. I’ll try to keep these posts regular. I’ve been so focused on editing and improving my stories recently that as I write, I find myself thinking about previous chapters and things that might need to be changed or chopped to keep the pace. I’m just writing them down in a notebook for now and I’ll address them when I get around to the second draft. I’m not one for tinkering as I write. I’m of the “get it written, then get it right” school of philosophy.
Time for house stuff now – washing, tidying, a bit of exercise, and installing a new shower with my dad!
I really want to keep writing. I haven’t felt the writing bug like this for a long time. It doesn’t help that I almost missed my stop on the train last night because I was so engrossed in writing and I left the hero on the verge of a rather swoon-worthy speech to the heroine!

Novel planning phase is almost over!
Well, it’s taken a while but the planning phase for Arcadian is almost over. I’m just putting the finishing touches to the character bios and printing out some information that I typed up so I can put it into a binder with all my bios, plot outline and scene notes.
It took almost two weeks to write up the plot outline in my non-work time. Sometimes having to work really gets in the way of writing. Still, it’s done now… but I have this feeling that the story isn going to be longer than I expected it to be. I had a feeling that it would be around the 100,000 words mark, but now that I’ve written up a comprehensive plot outline, it feels as though it’s going to be closer to 130,000 words. It might not be, but normally my inklings about these kinds of things are pretty close to the mark.
I can’t wait to get writing again but it’s going to take quite a lot of psyching up as it’s been a while since I’ve done any writing and I have become quite comfortable with just learning Japanese and doing other things in my time to and from work on the train.
I’ll let you know more as I progress. Probably weekly updates so I can see how I’m getting along and track my progress, and so you guys can see how it’s coming too!
Speak soon,
F

Latest Romance Ebook Reviews
It’s been a while since I posted reviews for my stories… I’m so behind! So here’s the latest reviews that I’ve received.
Seventh Circle
Dark, sensual and fast-paced, Seventh Circle is a story of forbidden love so strong that it will save the world.
Born with strange powers similar to a vampire’s, Lilith has spent her life hunting demons for Section Seven. Now, on the very same night that she watches a vampire kill her best friend, she’s faced with her worse nightmare.
A client who is not only attractive, but a vampire.
Lincoln, a powerful pure blood vampire, has a problem. The prophecy he’s caught up in is coming to pass and his only chance of survival is relying on those he hates most—vampire hunters. It has been foretold that one will save him, a female hunter, and when he meets her, the attraction he feels is both instantaneous and forbidden.
Their mutual attraction becomes difficult to deny as they work to unravel the mystery of a contract between Lincoln’s lord and the Devil. The barriers around their hearts fall, but is there only pain ahead of them? With Lincoln’s life on the line, can Lilith find the strength to protect him and embrace a side of herself that she wished didn’t exist? Can Lincoln overcome his fear in order to save Lilith even if it means parting from her forever? What price will they pay to be together?
Reviews:
“Seventh Circle was the first book of Heaton’s that I have read, I went in not knowing what to expect and came out finding a great new author. This story moved quickly and never had a slow moment to place the bookmark. Lilith had a hard time separating the man from the vampire when it came to Lincoln. Lincoln sees being attracted to Lilith as just one more sin to add to his ever growing list. You have so many elements in one book. Looking past appearances and seeing the real person inside. Finding out that you are stronger than you think you are and that love is worth sacrificing for. It is a Romeo and Juliet story with fangs and stakes.” — Megan, Bitten by Books — 5 out of 5 (read the whole review)
“Seventh Circle is a fabulous read. Once you start you’ll find yourself sneaking time in when you should be doing other things to read that next scene, then the next chapter. The interaction between the two characters is strong and well defined. Lilith is a fabulous character who goes through emotional torture in order to save the man she loves. And Lincoln, well, let’s just say he’s every woman’s idea of a dark, super sexy vampire. I will most certainly be awaiting the next Vampires Realm novel.” — Alyson J, We Write Romance — 4 out of 4 (read the whole review)
“Lincoln and Lilith have great chemistry as they are thrust into battle after battle, saving each other’s lives while each fight the compelling attraction between them. I won’t give away the plot, but I will tell you that it’s chock full of demons, hell-bound contracts, angels, even Cerberus, with Lincoln’s marked soul the suitable exchange for the contract to be fulfilled. The action is fast-paced, the romance tender, and the characters’ personalities sharp. You’ll be glad you read this one.” — Clover Autrey, ParaNormal Romance — December 08 Reviewer’s Pick (read the whole review)
“Seventh Circle is a fast moving read, full of action and powerful drama. I love the strong trait that transcends in Lilith. She is vibrant and feisty, able to stand on her own next to Lincoln. I could practically see her expressions when she told him to clean up after himself, and not to get blood on her sheets or couch. Lincoln is an enigma whose charisma swoons through the pages. When you put the two in the same room, it is like an electric current when they connect. F.E. Heaton gives her readers a spellbound of a story that pulls the reader into the pages like a magnet. She instills a well-developed cast that delivers a splendid tale.” — Cherokee, Coffee Time Romance — 4 out of 5 (read the whole review)
A Promise of Passion
A dark, sensual and action packed story of two hearts, united in their passion and desire, but divided by their blood, A Promise of Passion is guaranteed to get your heart racing.
Alicia is a vampire hunter, unable to find a man strong enough to love and accept her for who she is. When Kassian, a tall and seductively handsome vampire walks into her life and vows to protect her, she doesn’t know what to think or feel. His eyes make promises that his searing touch backs up, but she can’t get past the fact that he’s a vampire and the fact that he thinks she’s someone else.
Kassian is certain from the moment he sets eyes on Alicia that she’s the reincarnation of his lost love and sire, and he’ll stop at nothing to convince her and make her his again. A taste of her blood makes him realise his mistake but doesn’t change his feelings or his resolve to have her.
Their mutual attraction is impossible to resist but a moment of passion places Alicia in the path of danger when Seth, the vampire responsible for murdering Kassian’s sire, sets his sights on her. When Alicia is dragged into a game of human sport, how far will Kassian go to protect his love? Can he save her or will history repeat itself?
Reviews:
“Alicia is a strong but lonely character craving a loving relationship. It was interesting to watch as she battled herself and her feelings for Kassian. He is as strong as ever and has practiced and perfected his skills and strengths. I loved his quiet strength and surety in his own abilities. As a pair, they make an unbeatable wall loyal to each other to the end. Ms Heaton has written a vibrant tale of true love beating even natural enemies.” — Hollie, Coffee Time Romance — 4 out of 5 (read the whole review)
“I was amazed at the amount of description, action, and passion that was packed into such a short book. Felicity Heaton has a talent with words, describing everything in such detail; I could feel myself there with her characters. I can only imagine the power of a longer book written by this amazing author.” — Melissa C, Fallen Angel Reviews — 5 out of 5 (read the whole review)

new series in the works
Well, everyone might be wondering why I decided to suddenly begin reading other paranormal romance authors. Normally I don’t pay much heed to what they’re writing. In fact, until I picked up a lot of the books, I only knew rough things about them – like J R Ward wrote vampires, Kresley Cole wrote a mixture of species, Lynsay Sands wrote vampires. That was pretty much the extent of my knowledge. I hadn’t even read excerpts or reviews.
Since the series idea I had was one that I was going to write for pitching to publishers, I decided it was important to check out the competition and see what got them published. I always begin with the first book in a series, the one that they had to pitch and hope it would be picked up.
I’d been planning my new paranormal romance series for about 2 weeks before I decided to do this. I’ve read a few stories now and have mixed feelings about them. I don’t think any of them write better than I do and I think the stories I have planned are just as strong, if not stronger, than the ones I’ve just read. I’m not being conceited. I just think that I’ve reached a point with my writing where I need to give it a shot. A while back I read a Feehan and a L K Hamilton story. Neither blew me away, but I knew my writing wasn’t at a level where I could compete. Now I’ve had a taste of writing series and I’ve found that I’m really good at world building, and that’s very important with series. I’ve also embraced the darker side of paranormal, the side I love to write, by writing some stories in my Vampires Realm series. All in all, I feel I’ve reached a point of “now or never” and if I don’t give it a shot with this new series, I’ll never know whether or not I’m good enough.
Of course, there’s a lot more world building to be done yet. Over the past 2 months, I’ve clocked up around 40+ hours of world building time. That’s basically me mulling over the series, the flaws and the strengths, the powers and the weaknesses, and everything else besides. I’ve got my heroes mapped out to a basic degree, enough that I know them, and my heroines almost figured out. I haven’t touched much on the enemy but I know roughly in my mind what they’ll be like. I have the world and the background pegged, and I’m very happy with how it’s evolving. I can’t really say much more.
I’m going to write all these stories together, back to back, and then edit them. Once the first book is in a polished state, I’ll send it out into the big wide world. I have a belief that having all of the books in the series completed is an advantage and it means that you’re serious about the series. I’m very serious about it. I only wish I could talk about it more!!!
Better go… before I say too much!

Out Now! Prophecy: Dark Moon Rising
Book three of my Prophecy Trilogy is now available at Fictionwise.com and the publisher site, Alinarpublishing.com!!
I’m so thrilled that this final book in the trilogy is out, but now I’ve got to live up to the amazing reviews and feedback the trilogy got and write the next book in my Vampires Realm series.
Prophecy: Dark Moon Rising
An enemy with unimaginable power and bloodlines with centuries of hatred bred into them, two things that threaten to tear Prophecy and Valentine apart as they fight for their lives and their future together. Their vain attempt to join their houses into one army drains the last of their strength, leaving them more vulnerable than they’ve ever been. The tension escalates between the bloodlines, and, more dangerously, between Valentine, Prophecy and Venturi. As everything crumbles around them, defeat seems inevitable.
In one decisive move, their enemy turns the tables against them, taking what is most important to Prophecy and leaving her to fear that the terrifying visions she’s been having are coming true. An enemy becomes a friend, guiding her in her time of need, and a friend becomes an enemy. Death, destruction and danger surround her, but the help of an old ally brings her the army she needs and the dark moon brings her the power to fight the legions of Hell.
When the time comes, will Prophecy be able to do what’s necessary or will the sacrifice she must make be too painful to go through with? Does she have the strength to stop Hell from being unleashed into the world and save the ones she loves at the same time?
The dramatic conclusion to the Prophecy story, Prophecy: Dark Moon Rising is a gripping tale of love and war that will take hold of you, set your heart racing and not let you go until the very last page.

Prophecy: Child of Light [book 1]
“PROPHECY: CHILD OF LIGHT is the first of an epic Vampire series that will surely stun, delight and engross the reader with each sweep of its pages. Ms. Heaton delivers a timeless classic within her pages and captures the essence of the characters perfectly. With each page, this reviewer was drawn into the world of Vampires that this fabulous author created…Ms. Heaton captivates the reader from the beginning and this reviewer is highly recommending this new and mesmerizing series for a reader’s bookshelf.” — Dawn, Love Romances and More — 5 Hearts (read the whole review)
Prophecy: Caelestis & Aurorea [book 2]
“Once again F. E. Heaton draws you into the fascinating world of the Vampires Realm… I really enjoyed watching her (Prophecy) grow as both a magic user and a woman. Continuing their quest puts both vampires in danger but also reveals the true depth of their feelings for each other. I especially liked the fact that Prophecy is so true to herself and her feelings. She doesn’t understand the feelings she has for Venturi, but does know that her heart lies with Valentine. As they search, their battles are filled with twists and turns as well as jam packed with fighting. So sit back and enjoy as Ms. Heaton skillfully introduces additional information about these two families, making you just want more! Prophecy: Caelestis & Aurorea, is the second in this amazing series. As for me, I’m off to read the next one–and so should you!” — Trang, Ecataromance — 5 Stars (read the whole review)
“Author FE Heaton captivates the reader with her tantalizing story, mesmerizing characters that will grab the readers’ heart from the first page and never let go! Within the pages are twists and turns that will leave the reader breathless and feeling like they were on a roller coaster of a ride! This reviewer found PROPHECY: CAELESTIS & AUROREA full of vibrant characters, a captivating story that leaves you gasping for more at the last page and sensual writing from an author that weaves a spell around you within each page! … FE Heaton is a bright new addition on the world of paranormal… Run to grab this as well as the first in this series, Prophecy: Child of Light now and be transported to the Vampire Realm!
