Not so summer hiatus
Well, my summer hiatus turned out to be not so much of a hiatus after all! Instead of focusing on programming languages, reading, relaxing and learning Japanese, I ended up getting frustrated at my programming languages learning (Yeah, I got stuck on a chapter, but I’ve got it down now) and wound up writing up a massive stack of on-paper notes for my Hades’ Boys paranormal romance / urban fantasy series onto my computer.
I’m really glad that I’ve been able to use some time to type them up though. I’ve been typing them now for a few weeks and I’ve amassed a rather frightening amount of words on screen. There are seven brothers, so seven books, and so far I’ve typed out 45,801 words in eight documents (one is a general notes document). I obviously have more notes for the earlier books in the series, as I’ll probably have to write at least the first three before fleshing out the remaining four. I also have more notes to write up, especially for the general notes document. And character bios to type up too.
I’d love to get these written, but, at the moment, I need to focus on building a bunch of releases that will cover me whilst I’m writing these stories. I want to write them all together, so my flow remains constant and I’m in the world and the characters. I don’t want to have to break into them by writing novellas and other stories, or editing during my writing phase for them. I suppose it’s all down to how much time it’ll take me to write them. The last thing I want to do is to release the first one without writing the rest. I don’t want to end up not finishing the series.
I’m thinking they’ll all be around the 100,000 word mark, which feels about right to me for this sort of story. Writing a 100,000 word story in first draft, when I have it planned quite well, usually takes me around four or five weeks. I write fast. Of course, that depends on any interruptions that might crop up. I never write when I’d have to break off to go on holiday (oh, what a shame! I need a good holiday…) or have other things pressing on me. If I had a straight run at these seven stories, and take into account a couple of weeks of planning time for each novel, and the maximum five weeks per novel to write… that’s 7 x 7 weeks… 49 weeks. Eep! A year then basically. Hopefully, I would get them done quicker than that. Even then, I would end up with a massive stack of editing to wade through the year after. Grr.
Maybe I’ll have to switch between writing the first drafts and editing the earlier stories to keep the ball moving.
At the moment, I have a decent amount of releases to cover next year, but I have other stories I want to write in that time. More about that later though!
Ja ne! (later!)

August competition and previous competition winner
Being away in June really messed up my schedule, so I’m late in posting the winner of the May competition. To make it up to you all, I’ll make this one an easy competition to enter.
The winner of the previous competition was:
Tamsyn
Tamsyn, email me at my usual address author@felicityheaton.com and tell me which one of my ebooks you would like and which format: HTML or PDF.
Since the competition will end on September 1st, when I have a new paranormal romance ebook out, and I’ve been sooooo slack with announcing the winner of the last competition, I’ll make that the grand prize for this competition!
So, to get your hands on a copy of Her Dark Angel, all you have to do is answer the following question:
Which of my characters would you like me to interview?
All you have to do to enter is leave a comment, with your name on it, answering the question.
Yep. That’s it. I’ve interviewed characters in the past and readers have really enjoyed it, so I thought I would make it a feature on my new site (which launches around the same time as my new release at the end of August).
You get a bonus entry for requesting a question too!
A winner will be chosen on September 1st, and announced promptly this time.

What is an acceptable price for an ebook?
Since the Amazon scuffle of earlier this year, there’s been a lot of movement on the Amazon Kindle forum about prices. I’ve read plenty of the posts, and seen authors adjust prices, and try to find the sweet spot, but I’m still left wondering: What is that sweet-spot price that everyone is looking for?
It’s probably FREE, but even then I’ve seen plenty of readers complain about the free books because they spent time downloading it only to think it was rubbish or lacking in something.
I agree that ebooks should never ever cost the same as the hardback, or even the paperback. It’s completely justifiable to say that most ebooks ARE overpriced. The publishers defend themselves by making out that there’s lots of work involved with ebooks and trying to push the cost of editing, proofing, etc over onto them too, but the trouble is that most readers probably see the ebook as a by-product. The book has been written, edited, proofed and given a cover for the print editions, so surely the digital edition is just a bit of tweaking and formatting? I do agree that the amount of work that goes into an ebook, when there is already a print version being made, is fairly minimal, but remember that not all ebooks have print counterparts. Yes, I’m talking about us darling indie authors and our ebook-only stories. While I can’t defend publishers for the prices they put on ebooks, I can’t defend those that want to pay pence for the ebook either.
Readers do seem to expect to pay rock-bottom prices these days. Yes, the economic downturn is probably partly to blame, and another portion can be assigned to those people in print who drive the prices up to ten dollars, but not all ebooks can be free, or priced at a level where an author won’t actually make a profit.
I think when readers purchase books, they need to consider the big picture. There’s much more than just the editing cost, the cover cost, etc to consider. There’s how much time the author spent writing the story for example, or planning out those little details that make it a refreshing read. It’s about the vast number of times they visited Starbucks (guilty) to write that novel. The cost of printing it out for editing it. A lot of blood, sweat and, very likely, tears went into it too. So based on that, as an author, I can’t understand any reader who insists that the 150,000 word ebook they want to purchase should be less than two dollars just because it is an ebook.
I try to be realistic with my prices, and often drop the prices of stories that have celebrated their second birthday, but the sheer number of people campaigning for 99 cent stories or stories under two dollars, slightly cripples a lot of authors efforts. We can’t all sell books for under a dollar. It just isn’t feasible (especially when so many people distribute them for free on torrents too!).
Some authors go by page count, but I like to go by word count, or what length book it would be as a paperback, and price it accordingly.
I think it’s totally reasonable to have a short story, or short novella, at 99 cents. A novella of say, 20-40,000 words could happily sell for a cost of $1.99 (that’s half the cost of a cup of coffee) because less time has been spent writing and editing. A novella of 40,000 to say a novel of 60,000 could be $2.99. A novel, I think should be $3.99… minimum. If you’re talking about my 150,000 word example, I would go as far as $4.49 or $4.99, as the print counterpart would cost at least $7.99 (or, ahem, £7.99 in the UK! that’s $12.50)
I think they’re quite reasonable prices. They accommodate all of the factors for editing, writing, proofing, planning, and making the formats and cover etc.
Of course, even I would choke if asked to pay $4.99 for a 15,000 word short story (as seen in a few places online).
Ebooks to me should be a few dollars cheaper than their print counterparts, but not free (unless they’re promotional) or priced so low that the author won’t ever break even on them.
What do you think?

Writing progress and taking a hiatus
My writing is going to be taking a bit of a back seat over summer as I need to study some new skills for my career and this means dedicating time to it, and taking that time from my writing. I’ll continue to blog and post competitions and things. I’m sure that I’ll be doing something writing related and I do have a few releases to put out over summer.
There’s just a lot to do at work and I feel as though I need to split my time more effectively in order to keep progressing in my career. Unfortunately, writing does suck up a lot of my spare time, so it’s that which has to give on this occasion. I have been so focused on learning new things since coming back from holiday that I couldn’t really keep my attention fixed on completing the second draft of Heart of Darkness. I wasn’t giving it the attention it deserved and my editing was turning more into a lazy reading session. That’s not good! So I’ve decided to put it on hold for now, complete a massive list of learning tasks for my job, and then approach the edit with fresh eyes (after a good read of some of my editing books) and I’m sure everything will be much better for it.
I sometimes take breaks like this and it always refreshes me and gives me the energy to start writing again. Of course, I’m stuck in edit-Hell at the moment as I have so many stories to edit (and so many waiting to be written) that it just seems as though that’s all I’ll be doing forever!
I think reading a bit of Love Immortal the other day really hit it home that I was doing lazy editing on Heart of Darkness. With Love Immortal, I went all out, pulled out those stops and really got stuck in on the editing. Approached and defeated a lot of passives, he/she sentences, and weak constructions. I haven’t really been doing that with Heart of Darkness and some of my other stories as I was a bit disheartened by the number of rejections that Love Immortal received from agents (but I do think that was a result of the 155,000 word count!). I need to recapture that dedication to editing and really polish up my stories to give them the best chance they have, and I can’t do that when I have a head full of programming languages and other things. Lol.
Heavens… this is beginning to sound like a quit post. Don’t worry! I’m not hanging up my pad and pen just yet. I’ll be back on that editing wagon soon enough (hopefully the writing one too).
I have the release of Her Dark Angel coming at the end of August. That should be exciting. With my focus firmly fixed on gunning for print and an agent, I haven’t released a paid-for story in a long time. I’ve completely forgotten the whole review submission nightmare and promotion insanity! That should be a lovely way of getting back on the writing saddle… if a little manic.
Once that’s out there in the big wide world, it’ll be time to decide whether I’m going to do the final polish on Ascension first and send it out to agents, or whether I’m going to do the second draft of Heart of Darkness.
Decisions… decisions…

Back from holidays, and posting again at last
Yes, I’ve been terribly slack at updating my blog, even when I kept promising to do so! I just haven’t had the time since coming back from my slightly long haul trip across the world to Australia.
My holiday was wonderful and very much needed. It was a great opportunity to recharge my batteries, live a little, and spend some time with my husband. We went to Australia via Shanghai, which is a strange mixture of modern/rich and old/poor. It’s very odd to see people living in run-down conditions just a few blocks from some of the worlds most advanced architecture and expensive shopping streets. The taxi drivers are insane. Actually, everyone on the road is insane, and there isn’t a point at which horns stop blaring as drivers go through red lights and come close to hitting each other as they race towards God only knows where.
Australia was a very welcome break after the insanity and heat of Shanghai. Having picked up what I affectionately called a Chinese burn in Shanghai, I was eager to enjoy the lower temperatures that southern Australia had to offer.
Sydney was a sunny (and a bit rainy the second day) 20c which was much more my sort of temperature (UK is currently enjoying a mini-heat wave of temps around 28c and it’s too much for me!) and it was such a contrast to the fast-pace of Shanghai. Once I was settled into Australia, I didn’t want to leave! We went to the Botanical Gardens the moment we were there, and saw the Opera House and Harbour Bridge together, and I also got to see the fruit bats (yes, they’re a pest, but they’re so cute and I really wanted to see them) that live in the city.
Second day we went to Bondi Beach, which was a bit rainy, but very cool when the sun came out.
Then it was off to Uluru to see the rock and Kata Tjuta. First night there we did a sunset at Uluru with the Sounds of Silence dinner, which was absolutely amazing. I’m something of an amateur astronomer (I own an 8-inch reflector telescope) and when they blew out all the candles the view of the heavens was just breathtaking. Husband referred to it as “like staring God in the face”.
Next day we went to Uluru for sunrise, and walked around the base, learning some of the Anangu stories about the rock, and then in the afternoon we went to Kata Tjuta and the Valley of the Winds (which always makes me think Nausicaa) and saw the most incredible sunset there!
Flew to Cairns the next day and went to the Rainforest, where husband wanted to hug a koala, so we did that and it was sooo soft and sweet (and later in the Blue Mountains / Featherdale Wildlife Park near Sydney, we saw a koala swipe and bit a poor Japanese girl!) and then spent a day on the Frankland Islands snorkelling (earplug in!) which was a bit scary as the water was full of bits of coral from the fish eating it. Husband remarked that I giggled the whole time and he could hear it through the snorkel… meh. He was braver than me, going out further towards open water, and his reward was seeing a turtle. He got pictures for me. I did attempt to go out a few times, but the word “shark” kept popping into my head when I couldn’t see further than a couple of metres clearly. We had a beautiful hotel in Cairns, the Rydges Tradewinds on the Esplanade. Close to everything AND we had a balcony. It was 27c and beautiful up there and we didn’t want to leave.
Went back to a colder Sydney and to the lovely Blue Mountains, and then crammed in a last-minute whale watching tour the morning of the day we were doing a night-flight to Tokyo. I don’t like boats (hence going to the inner reef, not the outer reef as 2 hours on a boat was not appealing) but this was cool. We went out of the harbour and immediately found a minke whale, and then two humpback whales. We followed the humpback whales around and they were incredible to watch. One even breached, which was amazing, and caused the husband to go “fuck me!” rather loudly as he’d been staring at the water in the exact spot the whale just came out of nowhere in. Missed it on the camera, but saw it in real life and that’s what counts, right?
Tokyo was incredible as always. I bought a couple new Gundam models (yeah, I’m a geek) and lots of stuff from Akiba (new mini figures for my work desk include Tyki Mikk from D-Gray Man, another Allelujah from Gundam 00, and a Sephiroth from Final Fantasy, as well as a VF25F Messiah (alto’s) from Macross Frontier… which join my 00 Gundam model, and another Allelujah… yeah… I love Allelujah.) and we went to some more theme bars / restaurants, including Lock Up (prison theme, very good), Kagaya (slightly crazy and unnerving/uncomfortable), Trick or Treat, Piano Bar (very small, only around 10 seats!) and Hollow Point. Hollow Point was the coolest. First you get a menu of drinks, and then a menu of air pistols to fire on the range. Husband fired a Robocop gun, with frightening accuracy considering it was his first time, but then he broke his wrist and can’t turn it too much so he can’t twist his wrist when firing, which I think helps… I fired a Walther P99… much smaller than my husband’s choice, less rounds, but it was a blast. You can even fire a grenade launcher!
Seeing my Bro-in-law and Sister-in-law was very cool. It’s always great to go out with them as they know all the best spots and my Sister-in-law is Japanese… which helps tremendously!
That’s all for now… what a long post!
