Character Biography - Marcus

Marcus

An angel from the division of Guardians, Marcus has done everything from escorting souls to Heaven or Hell, protecting mortals, handling prisoners or watching from the skies. Since waking to discover a curse inked onto his back that rendered his wings unpredictable, he has spent most of his time in Heaven, watching over mortals from a distance and growing very bored.

Marcus is very clever and dutiful, and rarely questions orders, even if they irritate him. He has difficulty connecting with mortals on an emotional level and generally sees them as nothing more than his duty most of the time and doesn't console any souls he has to escort. He doesn't get involved. He can even be quite distant towards his fellow warriors too, choosing to keep his feelings to himself and dealing with them alone rather than opening up and sharing his problems with others.

He's quick to fight and to do whatever is asked of him. Loyal to a fault, some of his closest friends think he's too loyal and needs to relax a little, but he's learned from his past mistakes and tries not to step out of line. He wants to make his life easier and it's been unbearable without his wings. He doesn't want to go through that again.

Marcus has begun to change since meeting Amelia and becoming her protector, especially his attitude towards Heaven.

Character Interview

This interview took place on August 1st 2011, shortly after the release of Her Guardian Angel

Felicity:
I have Marcus here with me today to talk about his book, Her Guardian Angel. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Marcus:
I am an angel from the guardian division and was reborn almost two thousand years ago. Since then, I have done my duty to the utmost of my abilities, obeying my orders and following them to the letter. My duty was my life, the reason for my existence before the events that happened in my story. I was willing to do whatever Heaven asked of me, no matter what it was. I have reaped battlefields in the name of Heaven, taking mortal lives as a temporary angel of death, and have shepherded souls through the halls of Heaven’s fortress. More recently, I have spent time as a watcher as I was cursed during a previous mission in the mortal realm and have been wingless for many centuries. During my time trapped in Heaven, I have watched over hundreds of thousands of humans, but it is my most recent mission during which I was assigned to personally watch over a single mortal female that led to my destiny changing forever.
Felicity:
Can you tell us about what happened in your story?
Marcus:
Thirty-one years ago I was assigned to watch over a mortal female, Amelia. It is rare for a mortal to receive a personal watcher and I placed great honour on receiving such a mission, although it was not what my heart desired. I had wanted to transfer to the army of Heaven, but the loss of my wings prevented active service in that division, so I was stuck as a watcher, waiting for the day that the curse might weaken and I might be free of it. That day came in the same week I was assigned to guide Amelia on her path. Difficulties with the curse and the fact that my mission was ongoing meant that I remained a watcher until the point when my story begins. My superior sent me to the mortal realm to act as Amelia’s next door neighbour. I had been there for around a month before we finally said more than just a passing greeting to each other. It was the night that her ex-lover came to bang down her door. When I intervened, Amelia was kind enough to ice my knuckles. Her touch awoke feelings in me that I had never noticed before and I began to change, even though I believed that change was impossible for both man and angel alike. I found myself desiring to disobey some of the orders my superior gave to me, and when Amelia was attacked by demonic angels, I revealed the truth about myself and our nightmare truly began.
Felicity:
Your relationship with Amelia is complicated and not only because she was your mission. Was it difficult for you at first?
Marcus:
It was very difficult. I have spent this lifetime surrounded by my angel brethren and thinking only of my duty. I had very little interest in the mortal realm and being sent there felt like punishment. It was only once Amelia touched my hand when icing my knuckles, and then spoke to me at length, brightening my world with her smiles and lightness and warmth, that I realised I had been developing feelings for her in the thirty years I had been watching over her. Since I had never bothered with interacting closely with mortals before, it was difficult for me to know how to handle the flood of new emotions Amelia released in me, and how to proceed with it all. My fellow warriors were not very helpful. Einar’s only advice was that it wasn’t rocket science and to allow things to progress naturally, and then the next moment he had thrown us together in Amelia’s inner world. If you ask me, that is matchmaking and not allowing things to progress naturally.
Felicity:
How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?
Marcus:
It is a constant fight. We are enjoying a time of peace at the moment, but I cannot say how long it will last. I have been teaching Amelia all that I can, preparing her for the day that someone comes after us, and that is all I can do. It does not feel like enough. I want to protect her, regardless of the cost to myself, but I know that if I die, she will be alone and I will be reborn as an angel in Heaven, and will not remember her. It is imperative that I remain alive. That we both do. My fellow warriors have been a great help, hiding us when they can, offering us training or advice. Even Veiron has been assisting us when he can. He is the last person I thought would help us out. Amelia continues to be the confident and strong woman I have watched her become over her lifetime, and I know that when the fight finally comes, she won’t back down. She will be at the front, fighting at my side, battling for the lasting peace we both desire.
Felicity:
Your story, Her Guardian Angel, is a book in a series. Can you tell us a little about the series and can we expect see more of you in other stories in this series?
Marcus:
The Her Angel series follows my fellow warriors as they come to find the loves of their lives and face the decision to remain as a loyal servant of Heaven or cast everything aside to be with their woman. I believe mine and Amelia’s story is the fourth in the series. It must have been nice for you to be able to write about the heroes and heroines from the first three novellas in our novel. I know you are looking forward to writing the next story in the series too as it is related to myself and Amelia to some degree, and that you enjoy being able to catch up with the others too.
Felicity:
I love writing about you all, and I really can’t wait to tell the next story in the series. I have a few final questions. This one is a fun one. Describe yourself in one word.
Marcus:
Loyal.
Felicity:
That certainly suits you. Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?
Marcus:
Only that if any mortals reading this would like to know more about my story, or those of my fellow warriors, I believe they can find information at your website. I would love for them to read the story of how I found the woman I love more than anything, and to hear what they thought of it.
