Lulu books, A Day In The Life, and holidays

I’m very excited at the moment because I’ve just booked the flights for a holiday I’m taking with my husband in June. We’re going to Australia, via Shanghai on the way there and Tokyo on the way back. Yes, I’m always going to Tokyo, I know. There’s a reason I speak Japanese!

I placed an order back on New Year’s Eve for a paperback version of Seventh Circle as I’m going to get it done with distribution on Lulu, and it only just came today, and probably because I complained about it. I had to mail them twice in the end about it as it had been sitting there in “fulfilling” mode since I ordered it, and that was three weeks ago. Two mails later and I actually received a reply telling me it was all sorted now and they’d sent it to me.

I came home tonight and there was not one but two copies of it sitting on my doormat! Oh well, two copies of my book for the price of one. I can’t really complain about that, but it would’ve been nice to have it a week or so ago since it will take ages to get into Amazon once I’ve approved it.

Speaking of Amazon, their Kindle publishing arm now accepts non-US authors, which means I can finally create and sell Kindle books on Amazon. Praise be. I was getting rather miffed about the fact that I couldn’t sell my books as Kindle editions considering that I can sell them to the entire world on most other sites. I even joined Smashwords to get into Amazon Kindle and other major distribution sites. I’ve opted out of the Amazon option there now and I’m going to produce my own Kindle editions. That’s another thing to consume my time.

I did a second draft on my next three A Day in the Life series stories today. Going well. I’ve planned another two as well, which leaves three more to plan, and then I’ll have to write those five.

That’s all for now…

Plot outlines, Synopses and PlayStation 3

It’s been a busy week. The snow has finally gone. It rained heavily on Friday and cleared most of it away. I’ve spent my writing time this week, on my journey to/from work and at lunch, working on my A Day in the Life series, and Heart of Darkness. I’m really enjoying getting the notes together for Heart of Darkness.

The story is predominantly the hero’s, and I do like writing that type of stories. I like writing the sort where the heroine is the central focus, and the story is primarily about her, but there’s something refreshing about writing something in which the hero has more at stake. Seventh Circle was the hero’s story, as was Killing Game, and a few others that I’ve written. It’s nice to have a change and I think it will be different to write Heart of Darkness. The hero has a lot at stake, his life actually, and it will be the heroine who will save him. I love that sort of twist too. Where the heroine is the one having to do the real saving. Sure, the hero will get her out of some scrapes and things, but she’s the one who will in the end save him from some terrible fate.

I’ve been getting all my written-on-paper notes together for Heart of Darkness, and writing up the plot outline on my shiny new netbook. It’s rather handy to have. It’s so much lighter to carry around than my laptop, even though my laptop is quite small and light, and the battery lasts forever, so I can type as much as I like without a problem. I was writing out my plot outline into a word document, and realised I could add in my random bits of notes straight into the outline, and other character stuff that I had written down. It’s so nice to be able to compile it all into one linear outline. Normally I have my scribbled down outline, and then number all my scene notes that are written on paper, and when I write the story with the outline and notes, I have to keep hopping between the outline and the numbered note it’s referring to. Now, I have my outline in a word doc (yay) and have added in the small notes and stuff to it, and will still have the numbered scene notes, because it’s a waste of time to write ALL of them up as there’s probably almost fifty A5 pages of them. But, with my next story, I’ll be able to just write all those scene notes on my netbook/laptop and then work them into the plot outline… so not more switching between the outline and the scene notes. Double yay. Of course, I’ll have to print it out to work from because I don’t like to have to switch windows on my computer. I prefer to just look at the notes beside me and touch-type the story on the computer.

Reading that back, it seems like a very sad thing to be so excited about.

I’m hoping to get everything finished for Heart of Darkness soon. I keep thinking I’m close but then I remember things like I have to check over my character sketches/bio for information to work into the story, and draw out the layouts of the places we visit more than once, and write out the decor for them. Yes, I do like to get so in depth. Continuity is important and it’s easier done when you have a layout of the building/rooms, and notes about what furniture they have, colours of fabrics, walls, etc.

I’ve also finished with the synopses for Love Immortal. I read the one page synopsis and three page synopsis out loud yesterday to make sure they’re perfect, and read the five page synopsis this morning. I’ve added in any changes to the word documents now and the only thing left to do is give them a proof. I’m really glad that they turned out so good without me having to write thirty drafts and versions to try and get one that really worked.

I’d better go. I was up until almost 2am last night partying with my family for my neice’s (2) birthday and I’m still over my folks’ house. Got to drag the husband out of bed and get home. I woke up early so I could get my five page synopsis read and some work done before going home… and possibly playing PlayStation. Well, I can’t be all work and no play!

Romance novels, editing, writing and synopses! Oh My!

I’m in a plotting and planning mood right now. I think it’s a vague attempt to escape writing synopses for Love Immortal. It has been quite productive. I’ve plotted five of my A Day in the Life series short romance stories and have written three of them. I’m planning to write eight of them this year and have chosen which characters will feature. I have to plot another three, but it shouldn’t be too difficult since they’re only 4000 word scenes.

I did figure out my rough schedule for the year to see what it was going to look like. Conclusion: Frightening.

I will write the first draft of Heart of Darkness in February, and after that I need to schedule in two more drafts each on Heart of Darkness, Forbidden Blood and Ascension. And after that I need to proof all three, and write their synopses, etc. When I totted this up on a calendar, allowing for writing, editing and proofing my A Day in the Life stories too, it turns out that to do everything minus the synopses will take me until the end of September. Blech.

I hate it when I figure things out and it basically says – yes, you’re going to be editing, editing and editing until September! Congratulations! Of course, another story will come along and bump that date a bit because I’ll write it in some fevered attempt to escape editing hell. I think it’s a special circle of Hell reserved for writers… or at least writers who aren’t lazy and do edit and do several drafts on their stories to perfect them.

Of course, there’s only one thing for it. I’ll just have to get my head down and get on with it. I’m not going to rush things though. I like to be thorough with my writing and do things properly. If I get my head down I should be able to shave some time off my predicted timescales. A few days off each soon adds up when you’re talking second and third drafts on three novels. If I manage to get three days off each, I claw back a couple of weeks working time. It doesn’t sound like much, but I could probably write 40,000 words in that time. I generally write for four days a week on my journey to and from work, and at lunch, and can usually clock up around 5000-6000 words on each day. That’s 20,000 a week. So, if I knuckle down and get on with my editing and really focus, I could save enough time to write half a novel. Yay!

I really want to get on with my Hades’ Boys series too. I need to do extensive planning on it since it’s a seven book series where the main story arc runs through them all, with each story having its own arc as well. I haven’t written anything like that before, but I have written my three book Prophecy Trilogy, so I know how much planning needs to go into it. A lot! I might start doing bits for it on weekends when I can, but I don’t usually have much spare time then.

Ah, it’s a planning, plotting, writing and editing nightmare, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just wish that doing second and third drafts didn’t take me as long as writing the first draft does! I could get so much more written and I’m bursting with new stories right now.

New paranormal romance novel and the year ahead

Just before Christmas I had another new idea for a story. I didn’t put it on the backburner as it was rather persistent. I believe that I mentioned it back in December and that I was writing notes for it at the time. Well, I finished writing the bulk of the notes for it and now I just need to get them into a coherent order and complete the outline of the novel. At this point, it feels as though it’s going to be somewhere between 90-100,000 words long. That’s a good length for a paranormal romance novel. It might end up longer.

The story now has a title: Heart of Darkness. It pretty much sums up the kind of story you guys are going to get. The hero is the dark one, a little out of touch with vampire society and balancing on the knife’s edge of becoming dangerous and little more than a monster. Of course, the heroine will bring him around and enlighten him about how things are done in this century, and save him from the growing darkness within him.

I don’t often write stories where both the hero and heroine are already vampires, so it’s nice to write something different. I don’t think Love Immortal counts on that front as they’re not precisely vampires. They’re more than that, and the heroine was human at the start.

I am gravitating towards vampires again, but I don’t mind. I know the market for them is probably saturated right now but I think that something different will always stand out amongst the crowd and be noticed. I’m sure that’s the case with this story. It’s quite dark. Yes, I usually write novels and stories that are dark, but this one has a new level, a little like Forbidden Blood has.

I do get to explore their society again, and I like that. I really enjoy having to think about things such as the rules they live by, the hierarchy of their society, the roles they have and how they live in our world without being noticed. It’s fun to tinker with these things.

Besides, the other series I’ve been planning for a while now and can only refer to as Hades’ Boys for now, is non-vampire (they’re demons/gods) and something I’m definitely going to write this year. I’ve been planning this seven book series for over a year now, on and off, and it’s time I gave it some more serious thought and plotted out the rough story arc of each book, and the overall arc of all seven paranormal romance novels. Believe me, it’s not as though I haven’t given this story some serious thinking time already. I have two notebooks worth of notes on the series already, but I’m nowhere near done on figuring everything out. It’s a monster of a series and I’m gagging to get going on it. It’s going to be a challenge to get it planned out in at least skeleton form and bordering on masochistic to write them all. I just need the main overall arc decided and planned, and the first three books fleshed out. The other four can be skeletons for now, which they almost are, and I’ll work on them as I go.

Of course, I can’t start writing this novel until I get other things done. I need to write a couple of my A Day In The Life short stories first, and finish writing synopses for Love Immortal. I think I should be able to start writing it in February, after which I’m going to focus on the second draft of Forbidden Blood. I have that printed out and ready for a nice sit down with some coffee and a read through. I might get out of the house that weekend and spend the day in Starbucks somewhere, so I’m not distracted from reading it. I do get distracted when I read at home. It’ll be a Saturday so I could probably go into Oxford with my husband when he goes to work and read it in a cafe there. I think it’s very important to have a good first read through as a reader, not an editor or author. It’s mostly about the storyline, characters, and any glaring holes at that point.

The other novel that needs my attention this year is Ascension. I think the second draft on this one will take longer than the one for Forbidden Blood. There’s definitely things I would like to change or add to in Ascension. I felt that way with Love Immortal and that took me weeks to do a second and third draft on. It will probably come after I’ve done the second draft on Forbidden Blood and written another couple of A Day In The Life short stories to clear the editing fuzz from my mind.

I’m off to plan a few shorts for A Day In The Life and work out my synopsis writing/submission plan for Love Immortal. Have a great day everyone!

Paranormal romance, agents, snow and kettles

Everything was going swimmingly this week until the snow kicked in. I had begun work in earnest on the synopses for my paranormal romance novel, Love Immortal (formerly known on here as Arcadian), had been getting back into work mode after the holiday, and had been figuring out my schedule for the year. And then the snow hit.

There was a good 10 inches of it on Wednesday morning, and there’s still a good 8 inches out there now. I couldn’t get into work on Wednesday or Thursday. The temperature on Thursday morning when I woke up to try and get into work was -14c! The paths and roads are treacherous, and I have to walk a mile to the train station to get into London, and of course the trains were breaking down because of the extreme cold. So, I stayed in the house, glared at the white world outside, snapped a few pictures, did some synopsis writing, and on Thursday cleared my long drive and cars of snow (which I am no aching badly because of). It wasn’t all loss as I did manage to get two good rough versions of a five page and one three page synopsis written, to go with my one page.

On Friday I managed to get into work, trudging through the snow and slipping on the ice to the station. There’s no snow in London. Actually, it was strangely local. My county got royally dumped on with 10-16 inches, and the nearer I got to London, the less snow there was.

I also managed to get the second three page and one page synopses written. Now I have to leave them to sit for a while and then I’ll print them out and read them aloud. Yes, it’s embarrassing to read them out loud, sounding like a crazy person to my cat and husband, but you really need to do it in order to catch mistakes, poor flow, lack of coherence etc. Reading off the screen doesn’t work either. We easily miss things on screen that we see on paper. Apparently we pay more attention to what’s on paper. Our eyes read it slower and therefore we see the mistakes, wrong flow and rhythm, and anything else likely to have snuck its way into the synopsis or story.

I’m trying very hard to get an agent with this story, and I’m learning a lot as I read a slew of websites about writing synopses, querying agents and publishers, writing query letters and other things necessary to the submission process.

I had hoped to get Love Immortal out to agents last year in November, but going to Japan got in the way (oh dear!) and then I ended up writing the first draft of Forbidden Blood too… which didn’t help, but I’m sure you’re not complaining about that one since there’s yet another novel coming. So I’ll be sending Love Immortal out in February, once I’ve selected a small number of agents that I want to send it to and really think would do something with the book.

There’s another downside to this snow stuff too… my kettle broke today. It’s a tragedy since I’ve had it for 9 years and then it goes and breaks down on me just when I can’t get anyway easily because of the snow. I’m going to have to settle for microwaving water for now… or perhaps I’ll treat myself to a hot chocolate. I did manage to get some milk on the way home from the station last night. I was starting to get a bit low and the shop in the middle of my neighbourhood has been out of milk and other essentials since the snow began.

I’m off to get on with some work now. There’s always lots for me to do.

Love Immortal – Read the first 3 chapters on Authonomy

My endeavour to get myself an agent is close to reaching its climax. At least the first stage anyway. I’ve faced my demons and fears, and have decided to add Love Immortal to Authonomy.com. Love Immortal was known as Arcadian during its project stage, but now it is fully fledged and deserves to be known by it’s correct working title.

To tempt you into reading it and leaving a comment, and even backing the book if you joined Authonomy when I posted Seventh Circle there, or join it now, here’s the blurb…

Love Immortal
When you’re searching for your purpose, the last thing you expect is to discover you’re a reincarnated goddess who’s about to regain her immortal powers.

Lauren is an average woman who is about to become anything but that. Rescued from werewolves by handsome immortal Julian, she discovers that she’s a reincarnated goddess with a 3000 year old destiny, and that’s only the start. Soon, she will need to awaken her powers by drinking blood and continue her duty to defeat Lycaon, the original werewolf and the man who murdered her parents, before he can gain revenge on Zeus. Swept into a dark new world, Lauren embraces her destiny and her desire to both avenge her parents and win Julian’s heart.

With the help of Ghost, a demon-hunting organisation, Julian fights to protect Lauren. But his feelings go beyond duty. Bound by the rules of her predecessors, Julian battles the attraction, determined to hold on until he cannot deny his forbidden love for her. But Lauren will stop at nothing to crack Julian’s armour.

As the love between them grows, so does the threat of Lycaon. Under a full moon, Lauren and Julian battle for their future together against a vast army of werewolves. Lauren fights to the end against Lycaon but will she be strong enough to win her happily forever after?

Please take the time to read the first three chapters posted there and comment, even back the book if you can as that would really help me. I’m trying to get an agent with this one, so feedback or comments, or backing the book would be a wonderful way for you to show your support of my writing. If I can get an agent, who knows, I might get published and you might see my books on the bookstore shelves!!! You can read, comment and back the book here:

A massive thank you in advance to everyone!

Snowbound… just the ten inches of snow out there!

Well, for once the MET Office weren’t lying and we’ve had around 10 inches of snow so far. That’s 25cm. It’s still snowing now, and my snowman I made this morning is gradually becoming featureless as he sits on the covered table in my back garden. This has to be the worst snow I’ve ever seen, or at least can remember seeing. I couldn’t get to work this morning. It would have been impossible to even try with the mile walk through the snow to the train station. I doubt tomorrow will be any better, or even Friday at this rate. It’s terrible out there. Here’s a picture to prove it…

See, that’s my back garden. Lots of snow! The bird table in the background has an afro. It started snowing on me again when I was making my snowman on my table. He’s very fuzzy with new snow now!

I’ve been working hard this week writing synopses of varying lengths for Arcadian, which I can now reveal is really called Love Immortal. It’s hard going and not something I enjoy, but there isn’t much point in spending a year writing and honing a novel only to rush through the synopsis and shoot yourself in the foot when submitting to agents. You may as well take a decent amount of time out of your schedule to write something which really sells the book and makes it sound as exciting as it is. No one enjoys writing synopsis, and for early stage writers like myself it’s very difficult to do, but it’s worth making the effort. I’ve allowed the whole of January for synopsis writing. I have a rough one page, a rough three page and a rough five page synopsis right now. They all need work and I’m bound to do another version of them before I’m satisfied. They’ll need revising too before I eventually send them out to my selected agents in February.

It’s time to make tea and watch the snow again before I continue trying to hone my three page synopsis into something of a satisfactory first draft.

I just want to take this moment to thank all of my readers for their continued support this year, and to welcome any new readers. 2009 has been a wonderful year for me, and I am slowly progressing towards my dream of becoming published and securing an agent. I hope that the New Year brings you everything that you dream of and desire too, and that you’ve all had a wonderful holiday season with your friends and family.

I really hope that I can succeed because I think you guys will love these stories that I have been sitting on, and I would love to reach even more readers with my romance stories.

I will also be working on free short stories, continuing my A Day in the Life series, which now has it’s own website. With luck, I will be able to release a new short story for you all to read around once a month. Fingers crossed that the muse remains with me on them. It’s great fun having to read my older stories to get back into character to write these shorts.
